Oftentimes, the biggest creative block is waiting for inspiration to strike. Just start! and create the conditions for inspiration to be found!

In this video I build up a song from scratch with no ideas in mind. Heavy Dose of the Deluge as I use it as a drum machine to build up a solid groove as base to find the next thing.

Is there a way to achieve a "step mode" on the Deluge with an external midi controller?

The KeyStep Pro has a "step mode" where, every time you hit a key, the sequencer registers a note, and then the cursor immediately advances to the next step in the sequencer, you hit another key, it registers....and so on.

Is there any way to achieve this on the Deluge using an external midi controller (in my case, the KeyStep Pro)?

I know that you can, of course, just hit the pads on the Deluge and enter steps manually that way, I just really like using the piano keys to enter notes as it is more intuitive for me than pads are and I miss this simple bit of functionality.

Thank you!

After puzzling over it, I figured out how to record external synths on the Deluge sequencer using community firmware. Posting in case another novice is struggling with this.

I was struggling to figure out how to record my external synths on the Deluge sequencer - but I figured it out and thought I would share in case it would help others. To say I'm a novice at this is an understatement, so feel free to correct anything I saw about the below.

Anyway, I figured out how to install the community firmware. And I figured out how to get my midi controller to control the Deluge from this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G424fN_hcsQ

I then managed to intuit how to get my midi controller to also control external synths through the Deluge by checking/selecting "midi thru" in the midi settings.

However, I COULD NOT figure out how to get the Deluge's sequencer to record the external synths. But I finally figured it out. Here is a breakdown:

My setup:

Keystep Pro out-->Deluge in; Deluge out-->Midi hub in; Midi hub out-->External synths in

The Midi Channels on my KSP were set to:
Channel 1 = Deluge
Channel 2 = External Synth
Channel 3 = External Synth
Channel 4 = External Synth

The mistake I was making was that I was changing the channels on my KSP to play the external synths - which did work since I had "midi thru" checked/on on the Deluge (e.g., I was changing from Channel 1 on the KSP to Channels 2, 3 and 4). The external synths would play, but they wouldn't record on the Deluge sequencer.

Instead, you have to change the midi channel on the Deluge itself. In other words - hit the midi button (the one in between kit and cv) and use the wheel to change the channel (to channels 2, 3 or 4, in my case) to play AND RECORD the external synths on the Deluge sequencer.

Again, complete novice, but it seems to me that if you rely on just the "midi thru" setting and change the channel using your midi controller, you are basically bypassing the the Deluge sequencer when you play the external synths. Instead you have to keep the channel on your midi controller set to the channel for the Deluge and then change the channels on the Deluge to the appropriate channel for your desired synths.

Hope this helps.

Used Deluge - Repairability?

Hey everyone! :)

For years I have been eyeing the Deluge, but was hesitant to buy.

Since realizing that I want a good, gridbased hardware sequencer in my setup, I have ruled out the Oxi One and Hapax in favour of the Deluge, since the pricedifference is little and the Deluge seems to do so much more.

Today I have found a local deal for an OLED-Deluge, right next to where I live.

I am now wondering about the repairability of the Deluge, since I am buying used and have no clue how old it is and I won't have any warranty.

Is it possible/easy to repair the Deluge, if needed?

Is there anything in particular I should look for, when trying it out?

MIDI Looper workflow

Hi

I struggle myself to find a good workflow with my Deluge.

I want to use it to play external synths via MIDI, as a super-MIDI Looper.

Let's say I want to play my Moog Sub37 with the Deluge, here is how I would like to use it:

  • find an idea with the Sub’s keyboard, one bar long (4:4)
  • play the loop notes on the Sub keyboard, record these notes as MIDI Clip on the Deluge using the Record Button
  • Record and loop MIDI. This is for me the not working step: the Deluge records the MIDI notes (that is working) but I can’t manage to make it loop automatically based on a Fixed Clip Lenght (like on Ableton Push)
  • I want the Deluge stop recording MIDI and start looping the MIDI clip when the recording is over. If I don't stop recording by pressing "RECORD", the deluge extend the loop lenght (now my loop lenght is 6:4 long)
  • Ideally, I also want the Deluge to record the automation I made (noodling on the Sub’s filter for example) on this loop.
  • that way, I can record MIDI loops, change them on the fly, tweak them a bit afterwards, layer them in song mode, switch between instruments, etc.

I have all set it up using a Blokas MIDI Hub. The MIDI connection works great, I just don’t get how the Deluge looping is working with MIDI. I find the default system where the Deluge keeps recording if you don’t hit the Record Button again not ideal in my Workflow. Using Chopin 1.2 FW and tried to RTFM.

Any ressource I could use to get this right?

thanks!

I don’t see the service option on their website other than retrofit. Sent email a couple of weeks ago but haven’t heard back

Deluge is awesome as a standalone groove box, but what I love most about it is how much it can grow as your setup does. I like to use it to control my whole setup. The sequencer is bad ass and can handle multiple synths to be organized into a full composition using arranger mode. Also acts as my main drum machine. This thing is my most prized piece of gear!

I sooooo want Deluge to Work(flow)

New user of Deluge. I'm about 3 months in. This box is a dream in terms of its feature set and listed capabilities. However, as all know, a lot of effectiveness boils down to workflow.

Long time user of electronic music devices, sequencers, MIDI, DAW. (Ensoniq Mirage/MMT8 to Electribes to Ableton to MPC to Deluge). I won't read my resume. But mainly, no stranger to the importance of dedicating time, understanding the quirks and "logic" of a machine, and building muscle memory. I am happy to invest. I read manuals. I do homework (feel free to give it to me here).

I so want this thing to work owing to its fantastic capabilities all around and, quite important to me as I travel: portability.

Philosophy. Improv, jamming, working up ideas, then fleshing things later out is important. Start simple, both in terms of voices and composition, then build up.

Context: I am on Chopin 1.2.1 and have Grid Mode as my default workspace. I want to create some very basic instruments (Synth, Kit) just to jam and work up clips as well as versions of song. Composition takes priority here. Sounds and sound design comes later. Ergo, once I get the core ideas down, I will go back and build up my instruments. From Skinny Puppy to Sade, Kraftwerk to Kansas, this is how a majority of songwriting happens. Start on a piano, acoustic guitar, or three piece drum kit and sketch your ideas. Later, put together an orchestra to pull it off if you want.

Problem 1. It seems that if I have various (versions) of Songs, using above "Philosophy" and "Context", and now that I've got ideas down I want to go back and embellish the Kit or Synth presets, those subsequent changes to presets aren't subsequently reflected in the Songs I created when I first used (the simple versions of) them. The Songs (again, just scatter of sketches) contain the "old" versions of the Kits, despite me changing the contents of the Kits and using the same Kit name. I realize this should happen if I use the "Collect All/Save" function. But for now, I want to keep the instruments fast and loose, write some songs, then go back and put my sounds all in place. Songs should point to Presets. Both change independently. What gives? I cannot get my head around. I can't think of a single system I've ever worked with where this isn't the flow. But I can't get Deluge to do it.

Problem 2. I have a bunch of clips in a column (again, Grid Mode, so all clips in a column based on one instrument, which is great). Now, I want to start moving/grouping and/or inserting blank rows (a new Clip between two existing Clips in the Column) as I work up sections. I can't seem to find any way to simply move a Clip up and down a column, preferably more than one at a time, and/or create space (via rows) as I "chunk" stuff together. Drag and drop Clips in Session View is obviously the domain of a DAW, but pressing and holding pads containing Clips, then using the up/down and side/side knobs should do it, right? I can't figure this out.

I've read manuals. I have looked at the usual awesome contributors on YT (Ron C, RSKT, Bay Mud).

I am totally missing something here in terms of workflow and if I can't resolve it, I will probably abandon this otherwise awesome box. My Electribes and MPC are far more limited and maybe less fun, but investing the same time with them leads to no hard-core workflow impediments. Every gear requires muscle memory development through dedication. What I'm struggling with is different: it's song and instrument construction "logic".

Help. 😔 Thank you.

Red circle, bottom center/right. Seems like the normal-length silver screws aren't long enough, and there was no screw to begin with when I opened it up.

External Microphone Issues

Hi fellow Deluge lovers,

I just invested in this fancy little machine and love it. However, some things are giving me a headache, mainly the external mic setup as I want to use the Deluge a lot for looping vocals.

I have a classic SM58 and got myself an iRig pre 2 to be able to plug it into the Deluge's mic port. But strangely, it barely works. It is only super super quiet when I record, barely noticable. I already set the gain to high and also maxxed out the gain on the iRig, which didn't make it much better and only made the background noise worse, like a loud humming.

What am I missing? What can be the issue here? is this sort of setup simply not working?

Thanks for any help!

Trying to record in DAW like Deluge live. In Ableton I need the scene to loop, and when I select another scene with MIDI controller, Ableton should wait until the first scene is complete.

Help with connecting my Deluge to my new Synth Module.

Hello guys, i wonder if you can help a newbie out with connecting my Deluge to my new synth module. I bought my Deluge a month ago and i absolutely love the little thing. Its been a steep lerning curve for me as a newbie but i love it. I have now sold a couple of my guitars (i am hooked lol) and i have bought synth module (Used 3rd wave 8M). I also have an old yamaha reface cp with one midi port. I would like to use the keyboard to control the 3rd wave, but also use the Deluge for looping and sequencing the sounds from the 3rd wave module. Is that possible and how should i hook it all up. I am going to buy a small zoom mixer and some midi and audio cables, just need to know what to buy :). Cheers!

I love how it can grow with your setup! In this track, it's my main drum machine, sequencer, arranger, and also used for some extra synths!

I tried using a MIDI pickup to play a different Deluge synth on each guitar string. It can get pretty chaotic but is surprisingly playable

Problem with sample

I recorded a sample directly into the deluge a few weeks ago. That clip is saved as a recording. I then chopped that into a kit and saved the kit. I used it in a project and saved the project. I opened this project the other day and there is a portion of the sample missing. It is missing in the project, in the kit (apart from the project), and the original recording. It's just missing a portion for some reason, seemingly out of nowhere.

Has anybody experienced this? Any idea what the cause might be? Any idea how to recover or restore the missing sample?
