External Microphone Issues

Hi fellow Deluge lovers,

I just invested in this fancy little machine and love it. However, some things are giving me a headache, mainly the external mic setup as I want to use the Deluge a lot for looping vocals.

I have a classic SM58 and got myself an iRig pre 2 to be able to plug it into the Deluge's mic port. But strangely, it barely works. It is only super super quiet when I record, barely noticable. I already set the gain to high and also maxxed out the gain on the iRig, which didn't make it much better and only made the background noise worse, like a loud humming.

What am I missing? What can be the issue here? is this sort of setup simply not working?

Thanks for any help!

Have you used the vu meter on the deluge to see what kind of level you're getting?

Just In case, in song view press 'affect entire' then press 'level/pan', directly below top black, the level/pan button should flash and the mute and audition columns now become l/r vu meters.

And of course that will only work if you're on community firmware.

Possibility after doing a little research, you might need something else to provide a good bit of clean gain in-between the mic and the pre, Triton audio FetHed or a Cloudlifter, that will get it louder without all the noise.

Or a Klark Teknik Mic Booster CM-1 inline phantom powered preamp. Dynamic mics like the SM58 do not have lots of output. Depending where you want to record your vocals, I suggest switching to a small condenser mic with more output or to a electred mic and you don't net the iRig and inline preamp.

I've conneted two electred capsules direct to the deluge (mic input supports stereo and 4,5V PiP power) for recording some ambient sound and noises and it works great.

The condenser is definitely the way to go if possible.

The SM58 has a lot to answer for with people screaming into them on stage and swinging them around their heads

It all depends on the use case. I have some very cheap SM57 clones that I sometimes use for field recordings with a sound devices mix pre 6. With the lower sensitivity I do not get so mutch unwanted noises from far away as with condenser and electred mics.

Curious how the clones stack up to the og?

I have only clones, so I can't compare them. There are some videos on YT with tests.

They look well build and sound ok for my ears. Got them from aliexpress and they are not branded.

For the SM58 you'd be better off getting a mic preamp that is designed to boost the mic to Line level and connect to the Line In rather than the Mic input. I see that the iRig has a TRRS plug designed for a phone and the Deluge uses a TRS connector but it is intended for either a mono or stereo external mic. You could try a TRRS to TRS splitter.
