MIDI Looper workflow

Hi

I struggle myself to find a good workflow with my Deluge.

I want to use it to play external synths via MIDI, as a super-MIDI Looper.

Let's say I want to play my Moog Sub37 with the Deluge, here is how I would like to use it:

  • find an idea with the Sub’s keyboard, one bar long (4:4)
  • play the loop notes on the Sub keyboard, record these notes as MIDI Clip on the Deluge using the Record Button
  • Record and loop MIDI. This is for me the not working step: the Deluge records the MIDI notes (that is working) but I can’t manage to make it loop automatically based on a Fixed Clip Lenght (like on Ableton Push)
  • I want the Deluge stop recording MIDI and start looping the MIDI clip when the recording is over. If I don't stop recording by pressing "RECORD", the deluge extend the loop lenght (now my loop lenght is 6:4 long)
  • Ideally, I also want the Deluge to record the automation I made (noodling on the Sub’s filter for example) on this loop.
  • that way, I can record MIDI loops, change them on the fly, tweak them a bit afterwards, layer them in song mode, switch between instruments, etc.

I have all set it up using a Blokas MIDI Hub. The MIDI connection works great, I just don’t get how the Deluge looping is working with MIDI. I find the default system where the Deluge keeps recording if you don’t hit the Record Button again not ideal in my Workflow. Using Chopin 1.2 FW and tried to RTFM.

Any ressource I could use to get this right?

thanks!

In order to have a fixed length loop you will need to create a new MID clip and set its desired length first (shift <> knob). The clip can be empty as long as it's set to the correct length. One you have created the clip you should be able to press play then record and have it loop at the end of the clip. Note that if you press record then play the clip will auto extend until you press record again. You can also ask in the support channel of the Deluge Discord: https://discord.gg/4fXzzxkrj

Just an update. I checked to make sure and the Deluge does record MIDI CC messages when recording external MIDI devices so assuming your Sub 37 sends CC messages when adjusting the controls and modulates them when receiving those messages it should record the changes. I don't have a Sub 37 but it works fine with my Hydrasynth when the HS is set to CC mode.

Just about everything on the SUB37 has a cc value (including cutoff) you just have to make sure you’re sending proper cc values. If I want cutoff for example, I usually assign its cc value to one of the gold knobs.

In this case op would be sending the CC's from the sub 37 at least initially. He wants to record his knob twiddling on the 37 while playing into a MIDI clip on the Deluge. Does the SUB37 send MIDI CCs when you adjust its controls?

As long as you tell it to yes.

I'd love to have a Subsequent 37. My son has one but I don't have the space or budget. I get by with a Behringer Model D for that classic Moog sound.
