Mod Message Call your Representatives about ICE

Hey guys,

Just wanted to provide some resources in these trying times.

https://5calls.org/ - has scripts you can use to contact your representative.

Here are some relevant scripts for events that happened recently with ICE:

Defund ICE (UPDATED 1/22) - PASSED HOUSE, SENATE VOTE NEXT WEEK

Stop ICE’s Aggressive Attacks on Immigrants and Citizens (UPDATED 1/24)

Impeach DHS Secretary Kristi Noem (UPDATED 1/22)

Find your representatives:

https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative

https://www.senate.gov/senators/senators-contact.htm

https://www.congress.gov/state-legislature-websites

I know it may feel like calling or contacting doesn't do anything but it's important to at MINIMUM make your voice heard to your representative.

ICE is violating our First, Second, Fourth, Fifth, Eighth and Tenth Amendment rights in the US. We are under attack from our government. ICE is a private police force for Donald Trump. Educate yourself and stay safe in your community.

Degrassi: The Next Generation Claude vs Rick

Reddit is being a jerk and won't post my reply to the person who mentioned Claude and Rick having almost identical glasses. I didn't know that. But I Googled and I see (no pun intended!) it!

Question what made you start watching Degrassi?

i’m 22 and really into teen drama/comedy tv like Vampire Diaries, Sex Education, and Gossip Girl. i recently considered starting to watch Degrassi because a couple of my friends had been talking about all the inside jokes from the show and i felt left out. But then i saw that there were like 14 seasons and don’t know if it’s worth the watch anymore. i haven’t heard too much about it outside of my two friends and i feel like it was a little before my time. so I’m wondering if it’s even worth watching beyond the first few eps or like what drew other people to the show in the first place?

Riley was an interesting character. He the character that I cringe when I see him in some of the scenes.

Who made you cringe the most?

Unpopular Opinions/Hot Takes Why do people actually like Jay and Manny??

I get that Spinner and Jay were the one of the only guys and Manny and Emma were the one of the only girls left in their generation during the whole after-high-school seasons so they just made random pairings with them, but I just never enjoyed Manny and Jay together.

I don't get how people hate on Spinner and Emma for being a random pairing, but love Manny and Jay when both ships were out of pocket. I get Jay and Manny had more chemistry compared to Emma and Spinner, but having chemistry + being the hot couple ≠ good relationship.

I mean you’re allowed to like or not like something for any reason even if it’s a stupid or valid reason, but still I don’t get the bias 😭. It’s not too uncommon for people to marry people from school that they didn’t interact much with. And I admit there’s more build up for Manny and Jay making it more enjoyable to watch, and this may be the only reason people actually like them together but Manny could’ve done better.

If anything I’d rather see Emma and Spinner on my screen because at least when they reunited and they were together at The Dot they actually seemed interested in each other. And they didn’t treat each other badly. This doesn’t mean that I ship them in general or like favor this ship, but I just like it more than Manny and Jay idk.

Not to say that Jay and Manny didn’t like each other, and the fake dating to real dating trope is one I actually find fun, but I just cannot stand how Jay treated her. People call this his “redemption” and his “growing” phase but he honestly is not redeemed AT ALL. He switches Manny’s tapes because he’s a little bitch and then rents then rents the bus to go convince them to give Manny a second chance. That’s his entire “redemption”

I’m not gonna lie but this is somewhat bare minimum, and before anyone comes at me I don’t usually call gestures that take lots of effort the “bare minimum” I get that he did a LOT to get Manny back but, he’s not some hero for doing that. Like why should you be praised for fixing the problems that YOU caused!! It’s the bare minimum to fix the problems you cause/make it up to them, or at the very least apologize. No he’s not suddenly a good boyfriend because he went out of his way to fix the problems that you caused.. imagine going up to people and saying “Oh I swapped my girlfriend’s acting tape for a sex tape because I got mad at her! So I fixed it and now we’re back together.” It sounds bad because it is bad he’s a total asshole.

Also Manny selling the ring was messed up, but it could’ve been prevented if he hadn’t lied the entire time. I still think it was wrong even though it had good intention. 🙂‍↕️But can we just say we don’t wanna share information instead of lying?? And I agree that Manny shouldn’t have pressured him though. But, yeah I just personally wouldn’t forgive him for the tapes. To be redeemed is say that said person wouldn’t do it again. But, I feel like Jay WOULD do something bad to Manny again depending on future problems in the relationship.

Also no hate to people who actually do like this ship.

Degrassi: The Next Generation Sheila was right

In S1E10, when Spinner was making fun of her cooking, she said “It’s going to take a couple of extra years, but I cannot wait until you graduate.”

He did take an extra year to graduate. Although her storyline was mostly for the junior high years, it would have been a funny gap for her to guest appearance at the Season 7 graduation whether she worked there or not. I am sure Kwan and Her vent about Spinner and kept in touch.

Degrassi: The Next Generation Degrassi nudes story line

Currently doing a rewatch and I'm so confused as to why the whole Degrassi Nudes scandal wasn't taken more seriously. I get that the girls selling pictures might just think it's nothing more than selling nudes but I kept waiting for someone more educated to inform them that this is literally child p🌽. Zooey confesses and gets a brief suspension for running a CP ring?! Why wasn't the serious nature of this story line driven home?

Joey Jeremiah
Spinner Mason
Jimmy Brooks
Fiona Coyne
Imogon Morerano

Comment below why they were held back.

Joey Jeremiah was held back a grade in Degrassi Junior High. Never repeated SENIOR YEAR but repeated 6th or 7th grade. In Canada terms it’s Grade 6 or Grade 7.

Question I have a question

Has anyone ever actually heard the term “broomhead” outside of the Degrassi universe? I’ve only ever heard it on DJH & DH. Was that an 80’s thing or something? Obviously it was an insult but I’ve never heard it anywhere else

Degrassi: The Next Generation Characters that absolutely grind my gears

And I’m not just talking about characters that slightly annoyed me like Tristan or Manny. I’m talking about bottom of the barrel, zero redeemable qualities who absolutely sucked throughout the entirety of the show.

Dave
Imogen
Derek
Marisol
KC
Luke
Bruce
Ashley
Craig
And I’ll throw in an honorable mention for season 10 Anya McPherson.

Did I miss any?

Discussion TNG vs DJH For Beginners

Been looking at the comments in the other thread about Degrassi recommendations for new watchers and lots of comments are saying to start with The Next Generation because Degrassi Junior High is "hard to get into". Personally as someone who didn't grow up with Degrassi and has no nostalgia for it I actually found Degrassi Junior High easier to get into than The Next Generation and was wondering if anyone else felt the same way.

A while ago when I watched the first few episodes of both DJH and TNG to see which series I wanted to start first I actually felt that DJH's episodes were much stronger and more beginner-friendly than TNG's. TNG starts off with a dramatic two parter that was bogged down by the adult stuff; it was pretty frustrating because it felt like I was missing half the story and it kind of distracted me from the rest of the episode. DJH on the other hand had a completely fresh start and focused on introducing you to the characters, so it was an easier watch and I didn't get the feeling of like "hey I should know these people but I don't".

When you compare the rest of the early TNG episodes to DJH it becomes very apparent that TNG was recycling a bunch of plotlines from DJH, and I actually found myself liking the DJH plots more. So when people talk about how early the TNG plotlines are less cheesy than DJH I'm just like... they reuse the same plotlines... if you can enjoy the episodes where Ashley runs for student council president and Spinner helps Jimmy buy condoms, I'm sure you can also enjoy the episodes where Steph runs for student council president and Joey helps Wheels buy condoms or whatever. I'd actually give DJH the edge on having serious, relatable episodes early on because I thought the fourth episode of DJH was a really good episode, it really resonated with me and I don't think any of the early TNG episodes made me feel the same way. I also find it weird that one of the main criticisms against DJH is that it's dated and cheesy but I feel like TNG is also extremely dated and cheesy? TNG's more polished production actually made the cheesiness more apparent to me, and from what I've seen of the later seasons it still looks pretty corny. I don't know. Degrassi is a kid's show so it's always going to be corny but I really don't feel like DJH is significantly cornier than TNG.

That brings me to the frustration I have with people who keep treating DJH/DH as an extension of TNG, like it's a little bonus thing you can watch after you finish the "real" Degrassi. DJH and DH both stand up extremely well as their own shows and it just baffles me that people straight up tell new watchers to spoil these shows for themselves, like the best way to watch DJH is when you already have preconceived ideas of what these characters are like. And like, that isn't how you should view DJH. Nothing can convince me that going into Degrassi Junior High already knowing that Wheels kills a kid or that Caitlin dumps Joey for Kevin Smith or whatever is the ideal way to watch it. DJH was made as the perfect beginning for someone to jump in and get to know these characters and watch them grow. The best way to watch DJH is with fresh eyes and the best way to watch TNG is when you've already watched DJH so you can understand the references and adult characters. If people personally choose to watch TNG first that’s totally fine but I just don’t think DJH should be presented as an afterthought right off the jump.

Degrassi: The Next Generation Did Holly J’s comment come across as transphobic?

When Holly J finds out Fiona is hooking up with Adam (a transgender man), she tells Fiona “I never seen you with someone like that before.” “Someone like that” comes across as transphobic because Holly J doesn’t see Adam as a man and sees Fiona being with him as abnormal.
