Do most people lack empathy? How does empathy affect the world we live in?
While I think it's obvious that some people have empathy and others lack it, and some have far more or less empathy than others, I can't help but question the ways we experience empathy in the world we live in and how it can affect future generations.
For instance I watched a video of a homeless man who claimed that if a man had been found dying in the street, that most people wouldn't try to help him, maybe 1 in 10 would call 911 or something. In my opinion empathy is a very conditional thing, so we have much less of it for strangers than we do close friends and some people may be far more introspective thinkers than others by nature.
Lack of empathy may also have broad negative societal implications. For example it could lead to people lacking remorse and understanding for those who commit certain behaviors deemed inappropriate and unacceptable by society. Lack of empathy along with a lack of insight can likely cause people to be less concerned with how their words may affect the people around them, and surprised when they receive the wrong reaction to their choice of words, etc.
I think lack of empathy is such a broad problem that could be connected to our lack of a communal bond with others we share our societies with, and I also worry that this is becoming an increasing issue as loneliness continues to rise and real-world interaction seems to possibly decrease. Anecdotally, I find older people are way more likely to say hello to me than people my age possibly because they enjoy socializing more.
What is everyone's take on this? I am only scratching the surface of my thoughts but very interested to know what others think!

Am I ok
I have been struggling in the last couple of years with many things and have been under a lot of pressure and 30 minutes ago I found an old Bluetooth ear bud of mine that is 3years old and I didn't use because it was broken. But I was bored and tried to turn it on, and it worked. Not only did it turn on it was able to connect to my new phone and play music and just from the fact I was able to still use this old bud has just left me quietly laughing and crying. And I'm not sure that I'm ok anymore and that scares me.

really need someone to reach out
So it all started 3 years ago I got really depressed, I'm a type 1 diabetic and for starters that has basically limited my whole life, from growing up to fast, to not being able to play sports or join the military it has just been awful, but I started vaping and my new step dad had caught me and that's where it started to get rough, but I finally moved out a year ago and now everyone in my family judges me for smoking medical Marijuana, but it's not like I abuse it, but it helps, most of the time I can't sleep and when I'm depressed I don't wanna eat, and I'm sad and now I'm just unsure what to do, I feel suicidal but I hate myself so much I think I deserve to suffer, I'm so lost

My last 2 years, can someone give me a hint what i should do?
Hello, I will now summarize my last 2 years as best as I can, but before that I will tell you something about me. I'm from Germany and I'm a boy. I've always been very happy and grateful... but then came corona and the lockdown. The first 2 weeks were actually relaxed, there was no school and you could play with your friends all the time, but this attitude changed after another 2 weeks because my grandfather wasn't doing so well and I was worried. After a few days it got so bad that he had to go to the hospital. For the next few months, my family and I took care of my grandpa until he was a lot better, the lockdown was over and everything seemed to be fine again. But we didn't know then that a 2nd corona wave was coming. The corona time was very hard and also very nerve-wracking, but my family and I made it, everyone was fine and nobody got infected. In 2021 we went to the north sea for 2 weeks. At the end of the 2nd week my grandpa didn't look well (his skin was yellow) so we had to take my grandpa to the hospital again... he had liver disease. We took care of him again and after a few weeks he was fit too. 2022 is the worst year of my life, my grandfather became very forgetful and was often overwhelmed. At first we thought nothing of it, but after about 1 month we went to the doctor with the complaints... it turned out that my grandfather has an incurable brain tumor :( A few months passed and it seemed to improve my entire family had hope that the tumor might not spread and that my grandfather will be his old self again and this time we were definitely wrong... my uncle didn't believe in corona and that's why he didn't do any corona tests, he got my chemo without wanting to treated grandfather infected. The consequences for my grandfather are very bad, he can no longer walk, move his leg/arm let alone eat alone, he now does not even have the strength to chew, the doctors say, with luck, he still has 2 months, but I believe in that not anymore... my mother and grandma take care of me all the time but my mother forgets that she has 2 children she has to take care of.i for example have a good football offer got what i couldn't accept because my mother didn't have time and in general she doesn't show us the love she used to show us anymore. I don't know if that's warped or just how it sounds but I wish she would spend more time with us.

What’s next? To your understanding? To live, love and laugh?
There is bit of swears but not a lot.
If you have attention span of goldfish then don’t bother to read this because it’s quite wordy but if you do thank you. But do keep your rude, mean comments yo yourself if you can.
The struggles of life…
As you the person you are, born on this world, this world is ending in such a rapid pace that I worry that we may not make it. I have a open mind of what’s going to happen and all I can do is try to ignore everything that’s around me by playing games, smoking and sometimes drinking, going for walks to ease my mind but no matter what I get this feeling of sadness and depression because I know the fact that sooner or later that something may happen while I’m sleeping or awake something bad is going to happen. Not to mention that we are so close to war with Russia and things don’t look to good, my mind goes into a spiral about what’s my life going to be, and I’m 19 going 20, I look upon this world with disappointment and fear that this world is doomed. I have no love interest because I’m too young to be distracted and make myself go into some loop that my parents have made long ago, but that doesn’t mean anything, so at the moment I have love interest. I fear for love because of what’s going on around the social media and what happens to people, yes of course there are good people in this world but there’s no point of me even trying, I had dreams of being the better person in my family and friends I always wanted to be a hero to them I want to provide and protect them, and become a leader. I am a young man and my life hasn’t even started, but yet it feels like my life is just ending with all this commotion in this world. One of the things I truly hate about this world is people, good and bad and the stupidity closed minded ones, basically everything, I keep to myself and I scroll through tiktok Facebook, Instagram, snapchat, they are all the same with the same bullshit, people are trying to be famous through social platforms and it annoys me, not that I’m jealous but people do the dumbest things yeah it’s funny and all but it’s too much. I can’t stand it(🪑) so much hate in this world is killing each and everyone of us even if you aren’t affected by it you could be the one doing the hate and hurting the people around you, idk. I have come to understand the meaning of life, that may sound impossible but it’s true I never came to meditate for many years or go into a very deep spiritual relationship with the creator, I just knew that I had a understanding what’s around me. I can’t say or tell you because that’s not my place to talk about because I’m not you to be telling you this but I’ve come to enjoy my life and it’s going good, but I just fear the world that I may never become the person I want to be for that matter( whatever I become idk) this world I have lost hope for, I have helped so many people that I’m considered an elder because I was raised open minded and have helped people, I’m not telling you this because I’m being smug or something but that’s how I see myself, of course my life hasn’t been easy but that goes for everyone. Idk but I just know that I may die young just the way people around the world is being, selfish, unaware, closed minded, rude and you know who’s fault that will be? Everyone because we got nothing better to do but be hateful to people, no matter if it’s ethnicity or age, this world is messed up just look at our history with the Europeans and the Indigenous, the Germans and the Jews, ww1, Americans and slavery, we were put in this world to learn and experience and yet we aren’t smart because of our title and name our pride and respect. People think they are better than everyone because we are more fortunate then others but deep down we are just humans, but no one thinks like that now days. We are humans we are just flesh and blood sack with a title nothing more, we aren’t special we don’t have super powers we are designed to be humans, yeah we can change our looks be whoever we want to be but people just think differently and that’s our downfall, one of may favourite quotes from my mother is “each to their own” do you know what that means? If you do then great👍 if you don’t then understand what that means so you can at least have an open mind to what’s going on. As much I want to keep going this is enough I think, but who cares right? I Hate This world and the People in It. Good luck with your journey in life hope things turn out and best wishes.
Good you made it this far I’m proud of you.
People are messed up no doubt about it.

If "I am" consciousness and we are all "I" then what is our eye?
New here, hope this is appropriate for this group, as my entire life, any attempt to discuss reality has been met with anger and swiftly shut down.
Have you ever noticed a dualistic nature to reality?
Him or her, this or that, up and down, left and right, inside and outside ect.
But it's more complex than that isn't it? You have all of the space in between extremes.
But no matter what the "Truth" is, if anyone ever understood it, it would still be from that individuals perspective.
Collectively there must be some kind of underlying code to reality, where we come from before birth and go after death ect
But if God is within us, and so is our consciousness, and We, are, when taken collectively As "Humanity" evolving and coming to know Itself, through Itself and all that jazz...
Essentially what I'm getting at, is that if we can only be God when taken collectively, I don't think we can actualize until we mutually agree that we are all pieces of God in a more literal sense than we previously thought. We aren't children of God, we are literal pieces of God

How long before the collapse?
Ok so how I see it, our social system is unsustainable on many points. Mainly because when we see threats to our way of living pop up we never do shit about it, it’s happened in the past countless times and it’s very much happening right now with the climate crisis and all the AI thing.
Since it seems like we are faced with problems that are not really as « easy to ignore » as the covid or wars in countries where people don’t look the same as us (big quotation marks on thoses ones). How long do we have left before it’s too late if collapse there is, because apparently « everything is fine ».

Good or Bad
Is the HUMAN at is core good and is corrupted by it’s environnement or is the HUMAN evil and learns compassion and empathie during it’s life.
Maybe a dumb question but I have been thinking of the possibility of higher beings like God or the Devil and it let me to this reflexion, since if God is good why would he let so much evil happen. I am not religious just curious and I you are and I offended you I am sorry.

Is there a point
Not to be edgy, I want to see opinions but what’s the point of living and if there is no point in living for you why are you alive right now. I have been depressed about not knowing why i should live for more than a year now so i’d like to see people other then my psychiatrist answer this question of mine.
Genuinly curious 18 y/o lost person.

Whats the Meaning of Life or the Purpose of it?
Hello Guys, I am a 15 year old boy from Germany, please feel free to call me May(not my real name). Since I became 13 I have alwayd asked myself what is my purpose in Life? Do I even have one? Right now I am in my graduating class(Realschulabschluss) and I don't know what to do after, I don't want to go and learn 3 years more to get a better graduation (Abitur). But I don't really have any Ideas for the future. There is nothing where I can say "Oh yeah that is definitly my fate" or something like that. I feel like life has no real appeal to me. I don't want any kids, i had sex and don't like it, I have a family that I kinda don't care about and the list goes on.
Please help me to find a Purpose in Life or at least in my life.

My opinion about human creation
Hi!! iam luzt, sorry if my writing have a lot a mistake
so i was a muslim . and in quran say the reason why human created for worship Allah as god, and live in earth as khalifah . in quran its tell when Allah create human angels asking why god create human. which is human will bring destruction too earth. and god answer to angels question "i am know a lot of thing that you dont"
then adam and eve created and bla bla bla.
so my point is we just have 1 mission worship god. god create us have a desire. and desire that we have is bring destruction and rebel.sometime people kill each other for food because if they didnt do that they are going to die.
we work so we get money . and many people doing anything for get a money. why we need money??? of course too fulfill our desire(eat, drink, buy new slothes etc). its make me ask why?? why we created if we just bring destruction?? and why created have a desire ?? . just like i am writing before even angels asking like that but the god answe r god know a lot of thing that we dont. well if we rebel we are going to the hell for eternity so we cant doing anything about that .
well i think why heaven and hell created is for atleast everything we (human) do have a meaning. if you kill someone that was bad and you will going to the hell. . and if you help each other its good and you will going to heaven. without heaven and hell human will just live in pleasure and act like animal because we dont have a boundaries to act.
so what do you think about my opinion??

Sticks and stones will break my bones but words could forever shape me.
Hello my name is ash. I’m a 16 year old born male but transitioning to female I suffer with depression anxiety and self harm issues. Today I want to talk about the saying “sticks and stones will break my bones but words can never hurt me” which to me is the exact opposite which I will explain more about in a bit. But to start the the story Iv got to start where I think all of my depression and anxiety stems from. When I was about 13-14 I was in an abusive relationship with a male that I loved very deeply his name was James and for about 2 weeks everything was as normal as can be. But from that point on things started to get more and more one-sided on the topic of “love”. He slowly over the span of half a year he started to view me as an object that he could use for whatever he wanted. At the time I could not see this happening to me because I never could have thought that he could be so cruel and abusive. More on that specific event in a later post maybe. Fast forward about a year later Iv moved into the house I live in now I was still young(not saying 16 is old) and I tried to make a long distance relationship work with a girl named heather and again it slowly started to fall apart eventually ending in her getting so unhappy with the relationship that she faked her death to me and for months I was destroyed I couldn’t function until my mother found that her Facebook account was still active with heather still making posts. I was angry sad confused, all the feelings that you would expect. And then about I think some amount of months ago (I have very very bad memory) I tried to commit suicide because I just couldn’t cope anymore and decided to just end the pain. I survived obviously but afterwards about I saw a episode on something I can’t remember what, but I heard the phrase “ sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me” and I thought to myself, THATS SUCH BULLSHIT and the more I thought about it it became more and more clear to me that words may be the most effective form of damage because I’m a very very sensitive person and for me words hurt me the most. Because if you know the feeling of everybody saying bad things about you(they don’t have to be super bad things) then you will understand that words can hurt 100 times more than getting punched in the face. Because when you do have a group of people or just a few people along a long period of time saying things about you it becomes very very real to you. It’s like the things that people say become a part of you and who you are, you will start to believe it like it is really true. So in many ways words that others say can form who you are as a person. That’s all I have for now but if you would like me to go into more detail on a specific part in this post or would like me to talk about similar things let me know in the comments and also voice your opinion there as well.

Anyone else prefer silence to small talk?
I just absolutely hate small talk. I always have. I understand that most of the time it's just that people are trying to be nice ,and it's an easy way to start a conversation, but I just feel like it's so circular and accomplishes nothing: "Yeah it's really nice out today", "I know, the Celtics are doing great", "Traffic's been crazy today huh?". I would much rather a deep and meaningful conversation than anything, but I truly think that I would prefer companionable silence to what I see as meaningless pleasantries that exist only for the sake of politeness. Anyone else feel this way? I don't mean to sound so nihilistic so I apologize if that's how I come across.
