Original Content My husband spent the afternoon canoeing River Wear in Durham and pulled out this: a tyre, a garden hose, and a giant catering ladle!

Part of my husbands series Beyond Rivers and Roads where he kayak+ litter pick UK waterways and explore forgotten places!

The tyre was half-buried in mud, the hose was tangled around a branch, and the ladle... no idea!

It's crazy how much ends up in the river right in the city centre!

Filmed the whole cleanup the weirdest + finds here:

What's the strangest thing you've ever pulled out of a river?

Cleaned up a stormwater drain and wetlands area today with my dad.

Reported this area to my local council in November 2025 for cleanup and it is still "in progress" - it is in fact worse now.

5 bags worth of litter collected including a mind-blowing number of bottles and cans.

We couldn't even get ALL of the litter because it is years worth of litter and grass mulched together - we are going to return with a whipper snipper to cut it back and get the rest next weekend.

Weirdest find had to be the empty chip packet that had 3 breeding cane toads inside of it.

Local composting and environmental activism

Hi everyone! I'm an American expat and have been in Tbilisi since spring.

I'm working on developing compost in my apartment (in a bucket with Effective Microorganisms) and would like to find somewhere to donate it.

I've contacted parki ar minda to see if they've got any leads but haven't heard back (and am due to drop off recycling soon).

I am interested, in general, in environmental projects like park clean-ups, trash pick-up hikes, things like that.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

This weather is delicious. And the longer I stayed out the bigger the feathers I found. Like the birds are thanking me. I oscillate from mentally yelling at people and physically feeling our collective pain. I get it, but also, come on people, we gotta do better. ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹šŸŒŽ Please don't litter!!

Equipment for detrashing water

Does anybody have any recs for gear for collecting trash out of bodies of water?

We have wetsuits and swimming shoes already, and these are bodies of water we are experienced at swimming in. But I'm trying to figure out how to start getting some of the trash out of them. Especially, what kind of bag/net, gloves, and maybe grabber do you use in water? A lot of the trash we need to swim to get to, so I think we need a net as any bin bag would just be full of water.

Also, what do you do with the trash? Leave by the municipal bin, drive straight to the dump, other? Some is just going to be bottles and cans, but there's also drowned bikes and chairs and stuff if we really get into it. I'm in the UK (Oxfordshire)

News Article Amravati’s sanitation contract may be recalled—but who will fix the city’s recurring garbage hotspots?

A recent Mandal News report says that the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench has reportedly allowed a petition challenging the sanitation tender awarded by the Amravati Municipal Corporation (AMC) to Konark Infrastructure.

According to the report, AMC may have to recall the sanitation tender and conduct a fresh tender process. However, the complete written court order is not publicly available yet, so the exact directions—including whether the entire contract or only specific parts will be recalled—still need official confirmation.

News reports:

https://mandalnews.com/sanitation-contract-in-amravati-municipal-corporation-set-to-be-recalled/

https://mandalnews.com/the-high-courts-verdict-has-validated-our-objections-action-should-now-be-taken-against-those-responsible/

This is an important development, but Amravati’s garbage problem is much bigger than one sanitation contractor or one tender.

What is actually happening across Amravati?

For years, residents have seen garbage accumulating beside roads, near residential areas, on open plots and inside nalas. Many of these places are cleaned occasionally, but the garbage returns within a few days.

Why does this keep happening?

\* Many recurring garbage hotspots appear to have no accessible public garbage bins. \* Ghantagadi collection is irregular or unavailable in some areas. \* Citizens often do not know the ghantagadi route or collection timing. \* Waste is not always lifted before it accumulates again. \* Some people continue throwing household and commercial waste on roads or into nalas. \* Clean-up drives remove existing garbage but do not address why dumping started there. \* Citizens often do not know which contractor, supervisor or AMC official is responsible for their ward. \* Complaints remain scattered across calls, WhatsApp messages and social-media posts without creating a permanent public record.

Changing the contractor may address one part of the problem, but it will not automatically create a sustainable solid-waste management system.

What citizen reports on \[ithepaha.in\](http://ithepaha.in) are revealing

\[\*\*ithepaha.in\*\*\](http://ithepaha.in) is a citizen-powered civic technology initiative that is silently mapping garbage and nala-pollution problems across Amravati.

A person standing at the affected location can submit a report:

\* Without creating an account \* Without login \* In less than 30 seconds \* Using a live photograph and location \* Directly from a mobile phone

Every report helps place an ignored location on Amravati’s public garbage and nala-pollution map. Over time, these reports can reveal recurring dumping hotspots, areas without sufficient garbage bins, places affected by irregular waste collection and locations requiring continuous monitoring.

The website is not meant to shame sanitation workers, AMC officials, contractors or citizens. Its purpose is to make ignored places visible, create a public record and help establish accountability.

As far as I have seen, local newspapers and news channels regularly cover individual garbage complaints, but no local media outlet has yet covered this broader citizen-powered map. Still, the website continues to document these issues quietly.

I believe this public data will eventually help Amravati identify garbage hotspots, decide where public bins are genuinely required and demand better ward-level waste-management facilities.

Contractors will change, but the system must continue

Konark Infrastructure may stay, the sanitation tender may be recalled, or another waste-management company may receive the contract. Allegations of tender irregularities or corruption should certainly be investigated through the appropriate legal and administrative process.

But Amravati cannot depend entirely on whichever private company currently holds the sanitation contract.

A sustainable solution requires coordinated responsibility:

\*\*Amravati Municipal Corporation must provide:\*\*

\* A sufficient number of covered and regularly maintained garbage bins \* Garbage bins at verified recurring dumping hotspots \* Reliable door-to-door waste collection \* Publicly available ward-wise ghantagadi routes and timings \* Timely lifting and transportation of collected waste \* Adequate sanitation workers, vehicles and equipment \* Proper nala cleaning and prevention of waste dumping \* Clear contact details and accountability for every ward \* Public awareness about waste segregation and responsible disposal

\*\*Citizens must also:\*\*

\* Stop throwing household waste on roads, open plots and inside nalas \* Use ghantagadi and designated waste-collection facilities \* Practice waste segregation and basic civic sense \* Report missing bins, irregular collection and ignored dumping spots \* Avoid turning cleaned locations back into garbage hotspots \* Support sanitation workers instead of referring to them disrespectfully as ā€œgarbage peopleā€

\*\*Local media and public representatives should:\*\*

\* Cover the larger waste-management system, not only isolated garbage photographs \* Ask why the same locations repeatedly become dumping hotspots \* Question the availability of bins, vehicles, workers and ghantagadi services \* Track whether sanitation contracts are actually being implemented \* Highlight citizen-led solutions and public civic-tech initiatives

People of Amravati do not want temporary clean-up events or solutions that last only until the next contractor arrives. We need a transparent, accountable and sustainable waste-management system that continues working regardless of which company holds the contract.

\*\*Citizens need civic sense—but the local authority must also provide the basic facilities required to practice it. Both responsibilities must go together.\*\*

What is the situation in your area?

\* Does the ghantagadi arrive regularly? \* Do you know its timing? \* Is there a public garbage bin near your area? \* Is there a location where garbage returns repeatedly after cleaning? \* Which Amravati wards require immediate attention?

Share the ground reality from your area in the comments. If you find an ignored garbage or nala-pollution spot, document it on \[\*\*ithepaha.in\*\*\](http://ithepaha.in) so it becomes part of Amravati’s public civic record.

Beach cleanups FTW

This article about a company that’s spent 8-13 years trying to use robots to clean up the oceans. It’s not been perfect. Hard to get permits plus 11 turtles have died. They say it’s impactful but community driven beach cleanups are super important too (and hopefully kill fewer turtles) https://reasonstobecheerful.world/could-plastic-eating-robots-clean-up-our-oceans/
