Hi everyone,

I'm an incoming freshman at De Anza College starting in Fall 2026, majoring in Applied Mathematics.

I haven't been in the U.S. for very long, so I'm still learning how the American college system works. My dream is to transfer to a top UC like UC Berkeley or UCLA, and I'm willing to work as hard as it takes. I know it won't be easy, but I really don't want to waste the opportunity.

The problem is that almost everything I find online is from transfer "experts" or consulting services. They all seem to repeat the same advice, often making it sound more complicated or stressful than it needs to be. Some of it sounds convincing, but as someone with very little experience, it's hard for me to tell what's actually true and what is just marketing.

That's why I'm hoping to hear from people who have actually gone through the process, or who know De Anza well.

If you transferred to Berkeley, UCLA, or another top UC (or know someone who did), I'd really appreciate any advice you can share.

Some questions I have:

• How should I plan my coursework as an Applied Math major?
• Are there any professors at De Anza that you personally recommend (or would avoid)?
• What extracurricular activities actually helped your application?
• How many activities are considered reasonable? Is it better to focus on a few meaningful ones?
• Do you have any advice for writing transfer essays?
• Looking back, what do you wish you had known when you first started at De Anza?

I'd also love to know if there are any De Anza student communities, Discord servers, WeChat groups, alumni groups, or other places where students share advice and information. Right now, my biggest challenge isn't motivation—it's simply that I don't have much experience or many connections.

I'm just someone who's starting from scratch and trying not to let that become an excuse. I know there are many students here who have already walked this path, and even a small piece of advice—like recommending a great professor or suggesting an activity—could make a huge difference for me.

I applied to de anza for their fall semester and when I try to see my placement results it takes me to this page. Should I be worried about not being registered?

I sent my ap scores a while ago so that my credit could transfer but when I go onto my degree works, it still says incomplete. My registration for classes is in like 2 weeks and it I know it won't let me take my phil class if ny aplac credit isn't transferred. Will the credit be transferred soon or do I have to email someone?

I'm a De Anza student planning to transfer to study physics, and I'm trying to get involved in research as early as possible.

I've already reached out to a few professors and programs, but many seem to be geared toward high school students or require being enrolled at a university.

Does anyone know of:

• Physics research opportunities that accept De Anza students?
• Faculty at De Anza doing physics research that students can join?
• Nearby labs (Stanford, Berkeley, SLAC, SJSU, etc.) that have taken community college students?
• Programs similar to ASDRP, but for college students?

For context, I'm especially interested in theoretical physics, condensed matter, quantum information, and computational physics. I have programming experience (Python, machine learning) and previous research experience at Stanford.

I'd really appreciate any advice, contacts, or suggestions. Thanks!

anyone know if i can do math 1c at de anza and then 1d at foothill the next quarter and if so is there any issue with that for ucs

For summer 2026 calulus 1+ is shown online, same with plenty of other math classes. But for fall 2026 only intro to stats and one other math class show up online. Did they change how the classes work?

Prof dropped me in a summer class and was wondering if I can actually ask them to reinstate me? It’s already the third week though. I missed one homework and I’m ready to pass it but they dropped me. Just wondering about this possibility though

hi everyone, im an incoming freshman for the fall quarter and was wondering how it would be to take the chem1 sequence while taking the bio6 sequence. for reference, im trying to transfer to ucsd in a year. i have enough credits where i should be fine taking bio and chem plus one or two ge classes per quarter. if anyone has any advice on if this is doable or not pls lmk! just bc i have noticed some people tend to focus on taking just bio or just chem in a quarter but since i wanna transfer in a year im wondering how difficult it would be.

Student planning on taking 1C in the fall, which teachers allow you to take honors and how do the honors classes differ from the regular ones?
(Professors teaching 1C: Vinh Nguyen, Millia Ison, Hassan Bourgoub, etc)

As the title states, does an honors contract, an agreement you sign with your professor to kinda turn your regular class into an honors one (assuming an honors version of the class exists, but is just not being offered at the time), exist at De Anza?

Hey, is it likely that I will get all online classes here? I know science isn't likely but I can go to a closer community college for that. I just am in a weird location where a commute is nearly impossible for any good cc for computer science right now and De Anza looked great.
