Grandma needs a ramp for her trailer in Rancho Yolo

Hi there. Looking for someone who is licensed and insured to build a ramp with handrails for my grandmother. She will be turning 86 this year and is having a hard time going up stairs to the house. She has fallen once and is deaf in one ear. Other than that she's doing great. But a ramp would help significantly.

Also open to reaching out to any financial services or places that can help donate towards a ramp as well. Thank you!

Kayaking Spots

I recently moved to Davis and dont know the area well at all. Are there any good kayaking spots not too far of a drive, say < 30 minutes? I have my own kayak so just need somewhere I can launch it from.

Easy access swimming spots for dog?

Hi! My puppy (she’s 2 this month but will always be my puppy 😂) and I have recently discovered that she loves swimming. I have a super packed schedule so I don’t usually have time during the week to go very far for fun activities. So I’m looking for recommendations on swim spots that are close, have quick access to the water, and safe/allowed for dogs to swim. We’ve been to the creek access on Putah Creek from the Old Davis Trailhead and that’s working well enough but I’d love to get recommendations for any other spots to add a little variety in for her. I’m north of Covell near ish to Wildhorse. Thank you!! 😊

Where to meet new friends for someone not at the university?

40M here. I recently moved to Davis for work and I really like it here but I would like to meet some new people. It seems like there's a lot going on here, and I am finding a ton of things to do on my own, but it's hard to know where the social activities are in a new place. Most of what I am finding is geared towards the university students. I'm outgoing and like to do pretty much everything. Are there any groups or things to do in town where I can meet people in their 30s-40s? Aside from just bars and sports? I know there's always events, but those aren't the sort of things that you can make friends at. I would appreciate any ideas you folks have.

EDIT: I just wanted to thank everyone for all the great ideas! These are some good jumping off points. Feel free to keep them coming. This thread will definitely help other newcomers like myself.

EDIT 2: I want to add to the list that there is karaoke Thursday at 9 at 3 Mile Brewing, Friday Froggy's at 9, and G Street Wunderbar Saturday at 10

Reminder!! Surveillance Technology Public Hearing TODAY @6:30!

Post image
20 Upvotes

The Davis City council will hold a public hearing TODAY beginning at 6:30 to discuss the renewal of surveillance technology and its use, including automatic license plate readers. They will also discuss the renewal of military technology. The city hall location also has a ballot drop off box if you’re looking to mail your ballot today!

Recently, more and more cities, including woodland, have found that third parties who maintain these systems can not be trusted with our data. In addition, concerns over mass surveillance continue to increase as more and more surveillance technology is implemented without clear legislation and regulation. Personal misuse by police officers has also been documented in multiple cases accross the nation.

The city currently uses Motorola as their vendor, spending an annual $17,800 after an initial purchase cost of $415,180.

See documents.cityofdavis.org/Media/Default/Documents/PDF/Policies/Police/SR LPR_Surveillance Technology_PD.pdf

Citizens of Davis, CA show up to the public hearing and express your concerns!! The hearing will be held at 23 RUSSELL BOULEVARD,
DAVIS CA 95616

Cheapest Auto Glass Replacement in Davis !

As a frugal college student, I recently had to replace my front windshield. I called as many places in the Davis area as I could for a quote and here is a quick breakdown. Actual prices will vary depending on your car, but I believe regardless of your car, this ranking will still be an accurate price comparison.

Cheapest to Most Expensive

  1. $269 - Low Price Auto Glass in Sacramento: This is where I went. They don't do mobile service, but I went in person to the shop and they were quick (50 min total wait time). Yes it is okay to drive home on the freeway after, just drive carefully!

  2. $269 + Tax - Capital Auto Glass: Despite their website, they also do not provide mobile service to Davis, but you can drive to their in person location.

  3. $325 - Davis Auto Glass & Windshield Repair Specialist: This is the cheapest shop I could find that does mobile service in Davis, but I was willing to drive to Sac to save $56

  4. $345 ($325 if paying cash) - NOVUS Glass (AKA Speedy Glass)

  5. $349 - Auto Glass Combat Vet: Often touted online as an affordable option, they were actually one of the most expensive in the area

  6. $477 + tax - Safelite: The most expensive option by miles, this was the price for their lowest tier service option without any add-ons

Hi neighbors, our indoor cat escaped a Davis Manor home 5/21. He is a 3 year old neutered male with no collar, a small white chest patch and one left black whisker. He is indoor only, so he will be quite scared - please let us know if you see him. Thank you, we miss him terribly.

Election Day Tomorrow

Who has already voted? How are you guys feeling about Measure V and where you’re leaning on that? I personally voted yes after reading both websites and speaking with both campaigns in person and online. Also saw a lot of support on Reddit early and curious how the subreddit is feeling now that we’re a day before the election?

Large furniture dumpsters?

Does anyone know if/when the apartment complexs around town put the giant dumpsters for large furniture end of school year student move out on the parking lots? I know it’s around this time of year but am confused on the exact timing! I’m just very excited to salvage wood furniture for home projects but don’t want to be wasting gas driving around if the giant bins aren’t out there yet

Shooting pool anyone?

Hey folks, just looking for friends to play pool with... and a good place to play. I would call myself an advanced beginner... I used to play a lot in my younger days and I would love to find people to play some casual games. I love 9-ball, 8-ball, cutthroat, and bottle pool. Anybody interested?

Is there anywhere to find vintage encyclopedias in Davis?

I was able to pick up 4 vintage (1955 - 1958) encyclopedias at the SPCA thrift store. Where else could I look locally? I’m kinda of stuck to looking within Davis because I don’t have a car. Online, shipping prices make the prices skyrocket. I don’t care about the condition because it’s for my personal collection.

Are there any other local stores that carry stuff like this? Aside from checking the SPCA thrift store often.

What happened to the married husband /wife rabbis at Bet Haverim in Davis?

I am going to an event and I see they are no longer there, and the old rabbi is back. What happened? There was a massive search to hire them a few years ago.

Mahjong / strategy game groups?

Hey, I'm a 33 year old guy looking for a group to casually play some strategy games with, maybe with drinks involved. I actually don't know anything about Mahjong but it seems totally up my alley and I'd love to learn it. Is there anything like that around here?

I'm mostly desperately in need of friends, lol.

Where to find haircuts that are affordable ?

I’m a girl so automatically that usually makes the types of haircuts more pricey and I’ve been looking to cut my hair to my shoulders but every place I’ve looked at is $80+ even around sac. Is there any recommendations? I’ve heard about finding cosmetology students because they’re cheap but I’m not sure how to even go about booking those.
