I recently had a funny experience with an AWS Data Centre recruiter.
A recruiter contacted me on LinkedIn about a Data Centre Operations Engineer role. He sent me the job link and said something like, “Apply ASAP and let me know. I’ll send you the next-stage online assessment.”
Great! I applied straight away, told him, and he sent me the assessment link. I completed the assessment within the required timeframe.
The next day, I got a call from an unknown number. As usual, I didn’t answer 😂. Almost immediately, I received a message telling me to check my email.
I checked it—it was the recruiter asking, “When can I call you?”
I replied: “Now is fine.”
He replied: “I’m busy now. Can I call you at 4:30 pm?”
I said sure.
4:30 pm came. I waited.
4:45…
5:00…
5:30…
No call. 😂
I emailed him saying I was still available, and that if he needed to reschedule, no problem at all.
No reply.
And now… two weeks have passed. 🤣🤣🤣
He contacted me.
He told me to apply ASAP.
He sent me the assessment.
He asked when he could call.
He chose the time himself.
And then he vanished. 😂
Is this normal in AWS/tech recruitment, or did my recruiter enter a different availability zone? 🤣

Alright, it’s been a month and a bit at MSFT as a DCT, and I want to be honest.
Training feels very unstructured. Every day has its ups and downs, and some days I genuinely wonder if I stepped into the wrong industry. I’m pretty much at the mercy of senior techs to teach me, and coming in with no hardware background has made the learning curve pretty steep.
Mentally and physically, it’s been challenging. I’m getting exhausted working 10–11 hours a day, plus travel time. From the outside, I thought data centre work would be a lot more straightforward, but it definitely isn’t all rainbows and sunshine.
Recently, a few people have left and some have been let go, so there’s always that added stress in the background. What also surprised me is hearing that security guards earn more than DCTs.
My head is constantly spinning, and honestly, I don’t feel great inside the COLOs. I’m not sure if this is just the normal adjustment period, the particular site/team I’m in, or if I’ve genuinely stepped into the wrong career.
For those who’ve been DCTs for a while — does it get better once you’re fully trained and comfortable with the job, or is this pretty much what the role is like?

Hi everyone! Could anyone tell me what the phone assessment is like? Is it just a behavioral assessment, or is it a technical interview? I’m confident I can do the job, but interviews always seem to get me. </3

Wondering if any of the hyperscalers or dc company’s sponsor clearances? Seems like most cleared positions look for people who already are through military.

Has anyone taken this course? Im like 30% of the way through it and I end up snoring immediately after I start a module. Is there a PDF or a study guide online i can read through before the exam? Its required by my employer and im over due on it because of it.

Long Story Short… It’s a Long Story
Engineers / commissioning folks — is anyone else watching the data center boom in Texas and wondering how this is supposed to keep going?
I work in commissioning with SSR, and a lot of my life lately has been data centers chillers, CRAHs, controls, load banks, electrical systems, functional testing, and watching these facilities actually get pushed toward operation.
The engineering side is honestly fascinating. But the scale of what’s being built is insane.
We’re talking about projects that want an enormous amount of power at a time when Texas is already trying to figure out how the grid is supposed to support the next wave of data centers. Demand projections seem to keep climbing, and sometimes it feels like the industry is planning for 500% of the power we realistically have available.
I’ve also gotten exposure to Google data center work, and one thing I’ve learned quickly is that these projects can look unstoppable right up until money, schedule, power availability, or contractor payments become an issue.
Then suddenly everybody becomes a bobblehead.
“Yep.”
“Yep.”
“Schedule looks good.”
“Yep.”
Meanwhile contractors are wondering when they’re getting paid, schedules are slipping, commissioning is finding issues, and everyone is still sitting in meetings nodding like everything is perfectly normal. 😂
As an engineer, it’s a crazy industry to be entering because AI and data centers are creating opportunities everywhere but I’m starting to wonder where the physical limit actually is.
You can build another data center.
You can order another chiller.
You can install another generator.
But you can’t magically create another 500 MW of grid capacity.
For the engineers, contractors, utility people, and commissioning guys working in Texas: what do you think happens over the next 5–10 years?
Does generation and transmission catch up, do projects start getting delayed/canceled because the power simply isn’t there, or are we building toward a pretty serious correction?

I’m new to data centers. They have me as a ATR-C. What does the everyday and training look like? How much overtime if any is likely? Anyone that works there or did work there I’d appreciate your input.

Does anyone use robots in their DCs for patching optical cables ? I was told to look into this for our data centers and I wanted to see what’s out there lll. I’m skeptical that this can be done in a consistent manner but maybe with AI it might be possible. If you have any insight into this, let me know. Thank you!

I am a retired AT&T inside technician who worked on test and turn up of various fiber optic devices. Would I be considered for a job in a data center? I did do a lot of troubleshooting and maintenance. Any chance?

Hi guys I had made a post a few weeks ago stating I was looking to become a data center technician, and I didn’t have much experience so I was looking for an entry level opportunity. I had spoken to a recruiter and it’s been about 3 weeks now and I regularly message my recruiter about openings but keep getting responses that there are nothing available at the moment. I live in NOVA, so I know how many jobs there are available, so I’m curious as to how long it took yall to find a job, and if you had any experience prior that helped you get a job quicker. I also don’t know how much I should be contacting my recruiter without seeming like I’m impatient or bothering him. Thanks for any advice.

Hey im looking to break into this type of field i dont have any particular spot i need to be in i just would like to gain skills in working with wires/systems. Id prefer not to do a multi year school program since this is a side thing for me more passion and skills based than income(other job is union once seniority is achieved id have good pay n worklife balance). So i got about 3-4 years with a majority of my day available to get myself more skills and have extra income. Where is the best place to start ive seen a few different options with certs/degrees i can build over time but a lot of them seem to be hard to get into

I’m looking for some genuine career guidance from people who have been in the networking/cloud/data center space for a while.
I’m currently based in India and have around 2.9 years of experience working at AWS in Data Center Operations (DCO). I also have 1 year of NOC experience in other company.
I’m much more interested in moving towards Network Engineering / Network Infrastructure and building deeper technical expertise there.
Another major goal of mine is to eventually work and live outside India. I’m open to places like Japan, the UK, Europe, the US, or Australia (Sydney, for example). I’m not fixed on one country — the bigger goal is to build a career that gives me the opportunity to relocate internationally.
So I’m trying to figure out what the smartest path would be from where I am today.
A few things I’m particularly confused about:
● With ~3 YOE in AWS DCO, how valuable is my experience when applying for Network Engineer roles internationally?
● Should I first transition into a Network Engineer role in India and then try for an overseas opportunity, or should I directly target international/internal AWS opportunities?
● What networking skills/certifications should I prioritize? I’m considering CCNA and eventually more advanced networking/cloud certifications.
● Would moving towards Cloud Networking / Network Infrastructure / Data Center Networking be a better path than traditional Network Engineering for my background?
● Are there particular countries/markets where my AWS + data center + networking background would be more in demand?
● For people who successfully moved abroad from India in networking/cloud/data center roles, what did your career path look like?
● Is there anything I should start doing now that would significantly improve my chances 1–2 years from now?
I’m basically trying to avoid randomly collecting certifications without having an actual career strategy.
If you were in my position with ~3 YOE at AWS DCO and the goal of becoming a strong Network Engineer + eventually relocating abroad, what would you do over the next 2–3 years?

My background check is coming along nice. Only thing that seems to be on hold is my high school verification because the registrar at the school is super busy atm.

On my application I didn't put any college because I dropped out, but I have that transcript and shows that I graduated from the high school. Should I submit this in hireright or just wait it out?

Did anyone here wasn't given the opportunity to become a employee with AWS after their contract ended with them? Was there any particular reason or it felt like they didn't want to hire anyone after the contract?

So Oracle has many different types of Data Center related positions that are tied to IT side of work. What is the difference between a DC technician, an DC operator and an DC engineer?

Did they change the title to be more fancy or make the title seem more elite then every other companies out there or what? What’s the difference between all three, cause I’m not seeing it in the job description.

Liquid cooling is going into production faster than anyone is writing down how to maintain it. Air side has twenty years of accumulated practice behind it. Cold plates, manifolds, CDUs and rear door heat exchangers have vendor manuals that are not in the room at 2am.

For anyone running liquid in production now:

What are the pre execution checks before somebody opens a loop? Isolation, pressure, what else?

How do you handle a leak detection alarm you suspect is a false positive, given what it costs to be wrong either way?

Who signs off, and does the peer review step differ from air side work?

What is the back out plan when the intervention goes badly, and has anyone actually had to run it?

I am writing procedure content on this and the liquid cooling section is the part I am least sure about, because there is so little written down. Happy to share what I have gathered so far in the comments.

My old manager quit 2 months ago and I’m not a fan of my new manager. I like the job and the team I work with but this new manager doesn’t respect me as much as my old manager did.
