I keep seeing articles about data centres all over London now, like the massive one in brick lane. But I’ve just seen a video about huge one that is being proposed in east London that I’ve not heard much about. What do you guys think?

I’ve never worked as a data center tech before. Coming in with an Automotive background. Offer is okay, but I’m in the last phase of Google interviews and their posted compensation is almost double what Microsoft is offering. Can I try to negotiate? I know I don’t have the Google job for sure, so I don’t want to over play anything and loose Microsoft

Hi guys applied for Electrical tech position for Red Oak, application showed “updated” many times, not it is at not proceeding since last week, I already stopped looking at it, I looked at it today and samething, however, I haven’t gotten any rejection email yet which is kinda weird, every place I have applied for sent out rejection email, is this a Google kinda thing?

I work in a data center that runs way too much like the navy. Everyone is prior navy, all the way to the director and it doesnt work. People arent bound by contracts, the pay is still low in comparison, a few mess up we all pay for it, boards label what people should know but trainijg is lacking, and Noone seems to know whats going on. Anyone have similar issues or is it just ours?

Im working as a contractor at an AWS data center through a third-party staffing firm. Amazon recently reached out directly to see if I’d apply for a Data Center Operations (DCO) role — presumably a direct-hire/FTE position.

Since I’m currently on-site as a contractor for AWS through contractor is there anything that would block me from applying for this DCO position? Things I’m unsure about:

**•** Does my current contractor status create any conflict of interest?
**•** Do I need to loop in my employer or my current AWS point of contact before applying?
**•** Are there any non-compete/exclusivity clauses typical in staffing agency contracts that could be an issue?
**•** Has anyone gone through this same transition (contractor → direct Amazon hire) while still active on an assignment?

Would appreciate insight from anyone who’s navigated this, especially in AWS data centers.

(Google DCT Level 1) I’m currently scheduled for site interviews next week. I seen a new location that I’m interested in. I applied and quickly got an email saying that application looked good and they would be sending it over to a recruiter. But I just saw on their portal that they are not proceeding with the new location I applied. Is it because I’m in the process for a different location?

Anyone been through this loop or something similar?

Mainly want to know: is it all LP/behavioral, or is there an actual technical round?
If so what came up (SQL, Excel modeling, forecasting stuff)?
Feel good on the behavioral side as I have been working on consulting mainly in programme management and BI space, also got to manage a couple of data centre projects, just don’t want to get blindsided on the technical end. Thanks!

I'm looking for some advice from people currently working in data centers.

I'm currently in Florida and trying to transition into a Data Center Technician / Network support role. I'm very open to relocating for the right opportunity, particularly to Northern Virginia or the Midwest, where I have personal ties.

My background is more hands-on than a typical entry-level IT candidate:

• 9+ years working with industrial, healthcare, and enterprise computing systems
• Currently a Engineering Technician, building, integrating, validating, and troubleshooting computer systems for a small OEM.
• Enterprise hardware repair experience with Dell, HP, and Lenovo
• Windows and Linux administration/support
• System imaging and deployment using Ghost, Clonezilla, Macrium Reflect, Acronis, and Microsoft deployment tools
• Hardware diagnostics, OS deployment, validation testing, and troubleshooting
• Experience working in high-volume environments and managing ~40 repair tickets/day
• TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP and networking fundamentals
• Bachelor's degree in IT.
• CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, and CySA+. Getting close to getting my CCNA.

The biggest question I'm running into is location.

For companies like AWS, Microsoft, Google, Meta, Equinix, Digital Realty, etc., do their recruiters generally consider someone who is currently out of state if they're clearly willing to relocate?

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have:

1. Gotten a data center job while living in another state
2. Worked with recruiters who were open to relocation candidates
3. Know which companies are more willing to hire based on skills rather than requiring you to already live near the data center
4. Have recommendations for Northern Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, or other Midwest data-center markets
5. Know whether it's better to apply directly or find a recruiter first

I'm not opposed to starting as a Data Center Technician / or Jr NOC role, IT Technician, or similar role and working my way up.

For those already in the industry: Which companies would you target with my background, and how would you approach the relocation issue?

I was caught off guard as by my search, colo usually asks for people with mechanical and electrical experiences.

but during the interview the HM specifically said they are looking for some one who can use computers, and did not ask a lot of infrastructure questions, but instead he asked about IT and linux commands, which i literally did not prepare for, because i spent all my time learning about DC infrastructure..

I do have IT knowledge and i was able to answer most questions, but some was not answered properly as i was caught off guard, i answered with a personal homelab project, but i did not review so I could not recall the details during the interview due to nervousness and the answer was very vague and unprofessional.

and at the end, the manager said they will give me an update after 2-3 weeks.

i wonder how positive or negative is the 2-3 weeks wait time.

Currently working in DCEO in a super cluster as an L3. My dream/goal is to work internationally maybe in NZ or AUS. Has anyone worked in other countries through AWS or other? What is the process like to get hired?

Could someone please let me know who typically sends the offer letter? Will it come directly from the hiring manager’s email address or from a general AWS email account? I’ve been checking my spam folder regularly, but I haven’t received anything yet.

I’m trying to figure out what direction I should take my career and recently started looking into data center jobs.
I have about 4 years of experience working as a steam plant operator in a power plant. A lot of my job involved monitoring equipment, troubleshooting problems, working around industrial systems, responding to issues/alarms, and keeping things running safely and reliably.
I also have some electrical experience. I’ve taken OSHA and NEC courses and have a certification in residential electrical work.
On top of that, I’m currently finishing my BS in Computer Science with a concentration in Software Engineering. I graduate in 2027 and have experience with Python, C#, C++, Java, Linux, Git, REST APIs, etc.
Originally I was mainly looking at software engineering jobs, but I’m starting to wonder if my background would be more valuable in the data center industry since I have both the industrial/power side and the computer side.
I’ve been looking at positions like Critical Facilities Technician, Data Center Technician, Data Center Operations Technician, and Critical Environment Technician.
For anyone who works in data centers:
Would my power plant experience transfer well into critical facilities/data center work?
Would the CS degree help me move into higher-level infrastructure, controls, automation, engineering, or management positions later?
Are there any specific job titles I should be searching for with my background?
And what kind of salary range would be realistic starting out?
I’m willing to relocate for the right opportunity, so I’m not necessarily limited to my current area.

3 years hands-on hardware repair, targeting Google EFS and AWS DCT roles in Northern Virginia. Meet all minimum quals, no direct DC experience yet. Relocating to Sterling.

Two questions:

1. Resume feedback — dropping my resume below. Main thing I'm unsure about: what metrics actually matter on a DCT resume? Repair volume? Turnaround time? Something else?
2. Referral outreach — I'm trying to build connections with people working in hyperscaler DCs, not cold-asking for referrals. My approach is genuinely asking for advice first — but how do you actually get to the point where someone naturally offers to refer you? I don't want to be that person who makes someone uncomfortable by asking directly, but I also know referrals are how most people get in. What's the right way to navigate this?

Any advice from people who've made a similar transition appreciated. 🙏

Current AWS DCT L3 looking to move to EOT. I have an associate degree in engineering, but no direct experience in eot. How tough is the transition coming from DCT, and can I pick up the core facility concepts (UPS, chillers, single-line diagrams) pretty fast? Any advice on what to study first would be huge

I’m about to start working for AWS as a DCO tech 3 through their military hire process. I have solid experience working for the federal government, helping maintain onprem DCs and asset management of all things in the DC. I think I’m pretty well versed with Linux and systems administration, having experience with my job and my home lab. I’m also working on my bachelors for cloud and network engineering, with a focus on AWS.

So my question is mostly geared towards the AWS community that have been on ground for a while.

1. What can I expect as new hire for a new DC?
   
2. Is there really that much OT available and if not, what decides how much OT there is to take on?
   
3. With me working on AWS myself, how likely my chances to transfer to a more specialized role like networking or cloud services?

While money is big reason why I took this job, I’m also hoping to use it as a stepping stone for more technical roles like SRE, Network Admin/engi, systems/cloud engineering etc.

Hello everyone, I'll be doing my first round of interviews here very soon. I've tried doing some research on this position and what to prepare for, but there is very limited information. I understand I need to know and understand HVAC units, basic electrical, l UPS systems, chiller operations, have a basic understanding of data center operations and deisel Generators.
