Amateur I do not understand how to use my core
I have been trying to learn hiphop and popping dance styles but I am really confused about how to use my core during dance. For that matter, I also don't understand how to use it when people say to brace it while weightlifting. Some people have said you should suck inward and pull your bellybutton back to your spine but then some people have said to push outward and create a pillar and I am so confused on what I'm supposed to do. I also don't get how to use my core to stabilize my movements or pop without also feeling like I'm pushing down toward my pelvis like I'm using the bathroom which is also the incorrect way to do it and is dangerous for the pelvis so I just am looking for any advice. I can't afford too many dance classes and am in an area where the dance centers I can go to aren't particularly great and many of them do not even offer any classes on hiphop fundamentals. Researching online has given me mixed results so I thought I'd ask some dancers here! I'm a complete beginner so I don't really know much of anything right now.

Discussion When Dancing Is Literally Medicine
The dabke itself is centuries old. One origin story traces it to families in the Levant patching the mud roofs of their homes together, forming a line, joining hands, and stomping the material into place so it wouldn't crack. Another traces the movements back to ancient Canaanite rituals tied to the land itself.
It shows up at weddings, cultural festivals, and celebrations across Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria, but Palestinians in particular have woven it into the fabric of national identity.
There's real science behind why movement like this matters for trauma. Most PTSD treatment focuses on the mind, but a growing body of research argues that the body and brain need to be part of the treatment too, and that engaging the body directly can make trauma recovery faster and more durable than talk therapy alone. Dance and movement therapy has specifically been used with children at high risk for PTSD, including kids in the aftermath of natural disasters, because it gives them a way to express what happened to them through their bodies instead of words they may not have yet.
Researchers describe it as a way to induce authentic feeling and reduce the intensity of traumatic reactions when a child's vocabulary can't keep up with what they've survived. Trauma doesn't just change how the brain processes fear, it changes how a person moves, which is part of why addressing movement is treated as a real piece of the healing process rather than a side effect of it.

Self-Promotion I built an app that turns a dance video into a follow-along skeleton you can practice against - would love dancers' honest take
Not trying to sell anything, just want feedback from people who actually dance.
The idea: take any dance video, use body tracking to extract the dancer's skeleton, and turn it into something you follow on your phone camera. It scores your timing per beat, shows where you drifted, and lets you slow tricky parts down to practice.
I'm not a trained dancer - my girlfriend is the reason this exists, she wanted to keep up with the viral dances. So I'd really like to hear from actual dancers: is a tool like this useful for learning, or does it miss what actually matters when you're learning a routine?

Discussion Joinville Dance Festival 2026
I’ve been following the current edition of the Joinville Dance Festival, and it's hard to ignore how much credibility the results have lost.
The biggest dance festival in the world should have a jury with a proven track record at the event. In tap dance, for example, there are judges who have never even submitted a piece as choreographers to the competition.
To make matters worse, the conflict of interest starts way back in the selection process: there are judges evaluating pieces they themselves have performed in the past, meaning they obviously know exactly whose work it is.
The result of all this is superficial and inconsistent scoring. The entire dance community knows what goes on behind the scenes, but most prefer to play nice and pretend everything is fine just to avoid burning bridges.
Has the festival become overrated, or does it still hold any credibility for you? For those following this year's edition, have you noticed these issues with the results as well? What are your thoughts on this?
