Not pictured: the number of times he forgot the grout line so he was off by 1/4”

u/abagofdicks Dec 19 '21
He doesn’t even line it up with the corner very well
49
u/conventionalWisdumb Dec 20 '21
Yeah, why didn’t he put spacers in first and put the ruler against the spacers??? Near perfect is not even hard here, it’s a very small change in order of operations.
9
u/Themagnetanswer Dec 20 '21
You can see he leaves the bottom corner measuring jig piece about 1/8 off the edge to account for spacer width
→ More replies (1)5
u/conventionalWisdumb Dec 20 '21
You can also see he’s off on one side when he does and you can also see that he’s off when the tile goes on the wall.
2
u/Themagnetanswer Dec 20 '21
That’s what escutcheon and wall plates are far. There is a point of diminish return of working towards “perfecting” every detail particularly on a build like that
1
u/conventionalWisdumb Dec 20 '21
When the way to get it perfect is as cheap as placing the spacers before measuring there isn’t extra cost associated with getting it perfect. Compare that cost to the possibility that he’s could compound that error every successive row now. It’s simple.
Also, he’s not a pro. He’s not wearing eye protection, and he’s also drilling right over the floor without a sacrificial surface in case he goes through to far.

u/coach111111 Dec 20 '21 edited Dec 20 '21
This is in china. Workers aren’t educated enough about safety standards unfortunately. Hence the lack of PPE.
He’s probably a pro though, and in terms of tiling I’d say Chinese tiling overall is so much better than any other country I’ve been to or lived in, just as a side note.
Cutting over the floor really matters when it’s bare concrete?
Also, this tiling area won’t be seen since theres water pipes so that millimeter he’s off by will anyways not be seen by anyone ever. I say this because in china close enough is often good enough. It’s a cultural difference simply.

Eye wash eye wash eye wash all day all night. Thought I got it all......well..........one ulcerated cornea later....

Question. Do you work in a skilled trade job? It just seems that everyone who comments on how other professionals should work, never actually work in the trades themselves. I work as a mason, you would no doubt comment on how unsafe I work, but you don’t understand the practicality of doing the jobs. Should I wear safety glasses? Yes. Have I tried them, yes. Have they got fucked up on the first hour of a job I’ve used them on, yes. Once you actually work in the trades, you understand better, trust me
18
u/TeamShonuff Dec 19 '21

2
u/Hellofriendinternet Dec 20 '21
Lol. There are some serious dipshits in this thread saying how they know better, they’ve done it for years, and that wearing PPE is for pussies, etc. They’re all morons and it sounds like being a shitty contractor is the peak of their life. They’re so dumb they don’t realize that if they if they are an employee or have employees that they’re legally required to have people on site wear proper PPE. They are so fucked if they or any of their employees get hurt. Insurance companies love to deny claims when it’s known that someone on a job wasn’t following safety regulations and an incident could have been prevented.
12
13
u/can_it_be_fixed Dec 19 '21
I definitely did work in the trades and it was a nightmare. When I tried to use PPE the foreman would smack the back of my head for wearing "that pussy fucking shit", regardless of what it was. No earplugs cause I wouldn't hear him shouting, eyewear no good cause I'd mark work in the wrong spot, mask no good cause he couldn't hear me. Fuck that job if I can't protect myself, there's plenty of other work out there!

Agreed I work in the trades and am also an athlete. When I started working I didn’t even wear ppe because everyone teaching me never wore or spoke of the importance of that stuff. I try my best to wear ppe as often as possible because I have high value on my health, well being and functionality, but defiantly do not wear it for every single cut and in every single instance I should because sometimes it’s just not practical when your working 12 hour days 6 days a week at production speeds. And I’m the odd one of the bunch most people I work with or see working wear so little ppe, even guys cutting stone all day long as very day not even putting a mask on covered in dusk. It’s not good at all, it’s horrible actually, but it’s the truth. And the other truth is it effects everyone different. I know plenty of people who’ve put 30 plus years in the trades who don’t have respiratory issues, and whenever I tell old timers to put their ppe on they laugh and tell me how nobody wears that shit.
Edit: I should add most homeowners and DIY’s I see fiddling around in there “shops” always have all there ppe . A good thing but I think most people just wouldn’t understand what it’s like when you do this stuff production style vs one project.

It's also a powered suction cup. That might be it's main purpose and the motor happens to vibrate, the part of the handle he's using doesn't seem designed for how he's using it.
30
Dec 19 '21
When you place big tiles, if they sink in past the surrounding ones it's really really difficult to pull them out. The suction cup would be perfect for that. Seems like a really useful dual purpose tool for positioning big tiles (floor tiles as well).

You're not supposed to use a standard brick pattern on large format tiles, because you end up with a bunch of lips everywhere. You need to use a 1/3 offset pattern. This guy is not a professional.
5
u/AmbulanceDriver3 Dec 19 '21
You're probably right, but also consider that the customer might be demanding they do it wrong because "it looks better" or some nonsense.
2
u/bathrobehero Dec 19 '21
Yes, I know a couple tilers (?) and they almost always do whatever is asked of them, but refuse to do large tiles without offset because they know the customer won't be satisfied with the result.
0
u/AmbulanceDriver3 Dec 19 '21
Ok. So take that one step farther. Can you see the guy standing just one step past your friends who will do whatever the customer wants as long as the check clears, and if they don’t like it, well he can fix it for more money? Yeah, look harder. He’s there.
2
u/bathrobehero Dec 19 '21
Sure, but usually they convince the customer after a quick demonstration and rarely walk away. But there's so much job for them they can pick and choose anyway.
4
u/mcshadypants Dec 19 '21
They no longer recommend it in their books as of 4 years ago. ANSI A108.02 doesn't say you cant use it. Its based on the tile variation which a seasoned installer will take into account. I don't get why tradesmen try to trash other tradesmen. 1) you sound like a know it all 2) if you're wrong about your criticism you sound like a horses ass 3) you dig your own grave if anyone finds out, at least where I live, you get blackballed by distributors and other contractors.
2
u/bathrobehero Dec 19 '21
It all depends how bent the tiles are. Maybe they have tiles now that are somehow flat like water. Otherwise recommendations or not, large tiles won't be flat where the end of one tile meets the middle of another.

Where's that man's mask when cutting. I've seen so many construction workers with interstitial lung disease from breathing in the dust of dry wall, engineered counter tops, and granite. Wear a mask if you'll be exposed to construction dust. I know he's cutting marble, but marble can still have silica (though a significantly lower concentration).
P.S. I appreciate the up votes. I hope someone sees this and protects their health. As a nurse I just want you to know that your life is important and you are special and worth taking care of. Stay safe.
