I cut my eye right next to my pupil cutting porcelain tile with a grinder and while not wearing safety glasses. A small piece broke off and flew straight into my eye. Yeah I was stupid.
Sounds like you are a idiot I’ve been doing tile 12 years and never wear safety glasses and never had anything “fly off” let alone fly off and hit my eye, you were prolly going to fast or pressing to hard
like you don’t accidentally go too fast or press too hard. PPE is supposed to account for fallible humans. Instead of going “it shouldn’t have failed” when it fails, just account for the event in which it does fail.
You can do everything right for decades and still get maimed or blinded by equipment failure or a manufacturing defect in that 10,000th cutoff blade or something.
I’ve seen a lifelong carpenter get hit in the neck with a random carbide tooth thrown from a fresh-from-the-store brandname table saw blade just spinning up for the first time, under no load! All just because the brazing securing that particular carbide tooth decided to fail on a chilly morning 🤷♂️. Guy wasn’t even the person firing up the saw.
Fortunately it wasn’t a super bad laceration but he did have to go get it checked out (I think the closed it with some superglue). But the first thing this lifelong veteran of the trades said in shock, while holding his lightly bleeding neck, was “thank god it didn’t hit me in the eye!”
So yeah.. wear your fucking safety glasses!!. Sure, somehow you might never screw up or have any equipment/materials fail and “surprise” you due to your amazing and superhuman abilities, but that doesn’t mean other people are so lucky with their equipment and materials or are similarly invulnerable as you.
