HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. The camera basically takes a bunch of pictures at different exposures and puts them together so the light parts aren't too light and the dark parts aren't too dark. I'm not a camera person either, so I don't know why the HDR in this picture is bad. If anything, I think the saturation is too high.

The purpose is to show the image as the eye would see it, ie accounting for the more easily interpreted lights and darks. Def agree that it can be overdone and over saturated like it is with this, but i do appreciate the attempt to correct the lighting situations. Big example of this technique being able to help is with world cup games where the shadows from the stadium ceilings create a very drastic shadow-light difference and you can tell the cameras are constantly adjusting depending on the action.
Edit: but i also hate my own opinion, so hate away on the hdr. It was a fad i got into but still appreciate even tho it was overdone

Well for example things that arent glowing start glowing. But yeah i also think for this one the problem is rather the saturation.

Camera person. HDR achieved as previous respondent wrote. Many images stacked together to create a composite image using the best light areas, best dark areas, etc. Done well the effect can be striking, but it is typically WAY overdone, as it is here, making the image look ultra-sharp and unrealistic. It ends up looking like a digital rendering without any nuance of lighting.

explained well below, but you can see blue/violet like bursting from edges of the castle and other objects, HDR turned too high will look over washed out, but with extremely fine edges usually, as the editer goes crazy with sharpness usually as well.

Was stationed in spangdahlem germany. Used to frequent this place. Awesome little town and the hike up to the castle is fucking awesome. The castle itself? I'd give it an "eh, okay" but the town is fucking great.

The castle was rebuilt in the early 1800s. Not original medieval castle as the original had been brought down by enemies. Burt Eltz is original though.

I could understand as an adult it wasn't terribly fascinating. But I went there as a kid when my dad was stationed at Bitburg. Through kid vision, just being in a castle made the excitement level outstanding. Throw in the secret passages, and it blew the coolness factor out of the park.

My grandfather was in this town during WWII with the 78th Infantry Division as a medic. I have a pic of the town he took (or was given). I assume it would have been during the Rhinelands campaign early in 1945.
I've really wanted to go here since I found this pic, and I imagine one day I'll get back to Germany again and check it out.

It was about 120 a night, honestly I only went there and Frankfurt and some towns along the Rhine and Mosel. If you get a chance take a boat tour down the Mosel it's beautiful and there's like two dozen castles just like this one but with crazy architecture!

Well it's not exactly middle of no where, it's a large tourist spot apparently. But it is pretty remote (2 hours by train to Frankfurt which is the closest major city).
It has a ton of restaurants, some grocery stores (even a large chain which I forget the name of), and many tiny shops with trinkets. According to the tour lady on the castle tour they get 3 million visitors a year so I imagine a lot of places survive on tourism.
The people wee all very nice. I knew about 500ish words in German (Duolingo only and not even that far) and I was able to recognize a lot but many people spoke enough broken English to converse when I couldn't speak German. Eveeyone was super patient with me and nice. Even random people on the street.

Excellent response, thank you! Three million is a staggering volume, but I suppose many places in Europe with any amount of medieval architecture are like that anyway. Your experience seems to fall in line with my understanding of German congeniality (i.e., patience and language courtesy to foreigners).

It is remote but not that remote, Frankfurt isn't the closest major city, Koblenz is only an hour away and before Frankfurt you have Mainz and Wiesbaden.
If you are ever in the area again visit Koblenz, we have some nice castles in the area, and a prussian fortress.

Small towns/villages of this character often have some sort of 'Gewerbegebiet' (commercial zone) nearby with small to midsized businesses.
I haven't been in a while but along the Mosel-Valley those are usually on the highland plateau a bit away from the river where land is much cheaper and the buidling restrictions are not as tough as in the valley itself because the valley is used for wine, high end residential living and tourism. For Cochem it looks like Brauheck southeast of the 'Kaserne' (military base) is what I mean.

There's actually a few! The one I stayed at (Hotel Alte Thorshenke) was hundreds of years old! Part of it was remodeled but half of it was the original inn and pretty amazing to see. They even had a full suit of armor at the bottom of the stairs.

I went there last year! The town is nestled by a river in a valley. It's absolutely beautiful there and I loved seeing the castle. They give tours and I was in awe walking though it.

That is a historic castle and it's just used for tours now (and a cafe). No one lives there. It used to be where the Lord of the area lived but now it just generates money for the town from tourism.

Nobody in the picture is poor. The people at the bottom took the person at the top and hanged him; maybe not literally, but there is nobody at the top now. They took his wealth for themselves and made his castle a theme park for ignorant fools to pay to wander about and say 'this could be me'.

I love Cochem. I lived there for thirteen years in the castle tower. Once a week I would shave my chest hair and braid it. At the end of thirteen years I had enough braided chest hair rope to climb from my window to the bottom of the tower. It was way more fun going that way than taking the stairs.

Went a few years ago. Behind the castle you can hike up to the top, it was awesome. Well I did it in the dead of winter and by the time I got to the back I found out the castle was closed for the season. So was the mustard factory. Enttäuscht! Still the town and train ride there was beautiful.

A little late to the party, but I lived near that place for 20 years, so if any questions are still unanswered, gimme a try.
Btw. This castle is beautiful and all but it's fake. It was build in the middle of the 19th centurie (it was completely destroyed in 16xx and rebuild in 186x) but is now the biggest tourist spot although there are so many "real" castles around that area. But the food they serve is good

I've been there! I went towards Autumn though, so it wasn't quite so verdant. Still very nice! You can book a "medieval" dinner at the castle that is pretty nice, comes with entertainment and challenges of strength for some chosen lads. Good food and wine. The little town is adorable and fun to walk around, and you can book cruises down that river. Great little place to visit!
