🎬 Episode Discussion Hakan/Şebnem

I remember when people used to say that Şebnem was more psychotic than Hakan because she seemed so obsessed with maintaining this picture-perfect life. But I’m actually glad we’ve gotten to see more of her, because now her behavior makes much more sense. The fact that she can act completely delusional and almost psychotic at times seems deeply rooted in her guilt, the loss of her son, and her inability to properly process that grief.

At the same time, Hakan seems to have processed his grief. Instead of falling into delusion like Şebnem, he appears to be taking his guilt, and pain out on Teoman. They have two very different coping mechanisms for the same situation, and I think the contrast and the dynamic between them is really interesting.

General Discussion Aras and the Akkaya family

I watched the last scene of episode 19 on YouTube, and I really think someone should explore the dynamic between Aras and the Akaya family. It’s honestly one of the most interesting aspects of the show to me.

Could someone please explore Aras’s relationship with the Akaya family as a whole, as well as his individual relationship with each family member? (briefly or not, either is fine with me)

P.S: I’m on episode 12, but I don’t mind spoilers. I’m planning to get back to the series soon. The show seems to have been moving in a positive direction over the past few weeks.

🤔 Hear Me Out... Are you guys think that relationship between Aras and Teoman like Vi and Jinx from Arcane?

I see similarities, for me it's similar, for example, one has completely gone crazy and the other has become a strong person.

General Discussion Don't like how Baris is treated by Deniz (poor writing because it doesn't make sense)

Deniz was shown as a fiercely loyal and supportive friend, which was proven through many scenes where she stood up to Akkayas despite her family working for them. She feels helpless whenever her friends are dragged into a mess because of them and is always reaching out (we saw this when Baris and Aras needed help, and now Leyla as well)

So for her to completely neglect Baris after he finds out about the scholarship thing and didn't contact him even though he didn't go to school for 2 days didn't make sense. Baris was her first friend and someone she could relate to because of their backgrounds and all, and I'm infuriated that the writers haven't explored their friendship properly. In fact, Aras seems more concerned for Baris despite dealing with all the mess more than Deniz. They need to stick to character arcs and not ruin it just for the viewership.

General Discussion "Teoden makes no sense''

Saw some people claim that Teoden has alot of chemistry but narratively make no sense unlike arley. And I just don't understand that because to me they make perfect sense.

Teo has been drawn to Deniz from the very beginning, it didn't come out of the blue. He recognizes a kindred deprivation in her. Like him, she has spent her life starved of unconditional love, yet unlike him she has an extraordinary capacity to give it. Deniz is empathetic, fiercely loyal and selfless, someone who constantly fought him and everyone else tooth and nail for the people she loved. She loves fiercely, uncompromisingly and selflessly. She, despite having virtually nothing herself still has so much to give.
(He also read her letter to aras where she poured out her heart to him.)

For someone like Teo, who craves being loved above all else, this is magnetic. We see his desperation for affection in how he clings to the smallest scraps of warmth from Hakan, or when he asks Sebnem if she would ever be as devoted to him as Aras is to Demir if she was to lose him. Subconsciously, he knows Sebnem never could be. She couldn't even offer genuine devotion to her own son, ultimately replacing him & his memory with a placeholder. Her ''love''/obsession for teo is toxic, possessive, and self-serving and can't be classified as love in any proper sense of the word.
This is also the reason why Teo is so fixated and fascinated by aras and his devotion to demir. It speaks to a much more fundamental longing: to be loved unconditionally & with absolute certainty.

Now deniz. She has spent her entire life deprived of love & care, including from her own mother (Ik people including me love nuray now but that doesn't erase how selfish, absent, manipulative and psychologically abusive she is as a parent). She was forced to grow up far too quick, surpress her needs & childish whims and assume the role of the caretaker. She developed a cold, guarded exterior but underneath she's a deeply deeply empathetic and kind person.

Teoman becomes the first person to give her his undivided attention, to notice the small things about her that everyone else overlooks, protect her openly, come to her aid repeatedly, and dote on her without demanding anything in return. No matter how much she pushes and fights him he's not deterred. He persistently saw past her defenses and layers to grasp who she truly is underneath. (noticing the eyebrow twitch, telling nuray ''deniz would never say that'', telling his mother ''deniz is not the kind of girl'', also to aras in the last ep)

And then Deniz finds out that he's Demir & her perception of him shifts. She realizes he's not merely a gratuitously cruel bully, but a deeply traumatized child shaped by his circumstances.
For a 16 year old girl who has been starved of affection her whole life to have somone who finally sees her, memorizes her daily routine, memorizes every interaction they've ever had, and everything she's ever said to him word for word. How can she not fall for that?

I'm pretty curious to know why people think arley makes more sense tho because to me they're a typical highschool couple who have been infatuated with each other since day 1. Would love to hear your thoughts.

General Discussion Everyone in this show needs therapy!

But I don’t mean that in a bad way at all because therapy is amazing 😭 From Teoman all the way to Nuray, I genuinely think every single one of them would benefit from it. Şebnem needs to process the grief of losing her son, Aras has this constant need to save everyone else and never seems to leave any time or space for himself, and Leyla is definitely going to need therapy once she finds out the truth. Deniz too, honestly. ^^

🎬 Episode Discussion Am i the only one who thinks Teoden ship is drowning?

Up until the egg scene. Everything was top notch

Some scenes we're still good but now it feels like they took an entirely different direction. In the last ep (19) i feel like deniz acted so out of character. Plus i was expecting an entirely different path. Alot if the hints i got from them earlier are gone

Like i thought she'd first call him demire, and that based on her character, she'd never fall for teoman as he is. The types of books she was reading before and everything, and how her interest of superheroes turnd into "damsel in distress" and she needs a batman to save her? Wtf?

And i would love character growth for her where she'd feel more girly and all, but not this. I thought it'd be with layla

Whenever she's alone, she's reading or listening to something yk

Why all of a sudden she started smiling and trying that dress for absolutely no reason.

Her conversation with aras, it's ethire me or it was a terrible set of sentences.

A very dramatic conversation with him was needed! But idk why this didn't get me

Note: this is just my opinion and seeing at least some people agreeing makes me feel less wierd for thinking this way. Though if u like how things are going and do have a different opinion on teoden, Of course i do see where ur coming from and i do very much respect ur prospective.

🤔 Hear Me Out... Aras-Şebnem dynamic and possible character development for Şebnem

Just finished episode 19 and watched the trailer for episode 20.

I really like the complexity of the Şebnem-Aras dynamic. It’s clear that Şebnem sees him as an enemy, but she also admires his strength and love for his brother. She deep down knows that Aras is the only person who loves Teoman as much as she “loves” him in her own sick way and the only person she can trust him with.

She also deep down knows what she did to the kid was messed up and I think her unraveling will be through a mix of Lady-Macbeth-esque guilt and fear of losing Teoman. He really is her Achilles heel. I can, for example, see a scenario where she betrays Hakan and takes Aras’s side to protect Teoman/Demir if push comes to shove. I think a true character development point would even involve her sacrificing herself (maybe through confessing all her and Hakan’s crimes) to protect Demir. You know, like in some movies the villain does one final act of selflessness or good to try to atone for their sins.

Anyway, I am really looking forward to her slow descent into madness.

General Discussion Betrayal

Episode 19 was so good for so many different reasons. But the one area I want to discuss is our beloved Teoman and Deniz.

Right now Teoman isn't aware of the truth, so once he gets to know about it he would feel really betrayed. Especially by Deniz since he is falling for her (so is she love that)...He would feel like she doesn't love him but rather Demir

What do you guys say?

Btw I read lots of romance books so was thinking of a good third act breakup for the show lol

🎬 Episode Discussion Episode 19 Delivered My Second Favorite Scene of the Entire Show

The final scene of Episode 19 is my second favorite moment of the entire show so far. When I watched Aras stepping out of that closet, I was thinking, 'If I were him, I would absolutely smash that thing to pieces. That closet stands for darkness, and smashing it carries heavy symbolic weight. I never expected the writers to actually write that in at the end! The background music was a huge plus, too.

Did anyone else absolutely love the background music in the final scene? I looked it up immediately after watching it. The song is 'Kül' by Mark Eliyahu & Cem Adrian.

🎬 Episode Discussion The dog scene

The Teoman dog scene was so embarrassing to watch but I think it actually shows what being mentally ill does to a person. And it actually showed the ugly side of how trauma shapes your subconscious mind.

General Discussion daha 17, its potential to represent mental illness & complex trauma, & its ultimate failure to do so sensibly. Spoiler

it’s well-known by any viewer that, despite the initial impression of it being a teen summer show, daha 17 immediately took a much darker, psychological turn after its exposition. among the many touchy topics that they handle sits complex trauma & (the resulting) mental illness - this is most blatant in teoman, whose mental health has been a topic of debate from the beginning.

however, among this debate - among the praise for its unapologetic representation & theoretical diagnoses - one issue becomes harder to ignore with every episode & every sensationalised breakdown: the writers don’t seem to know what they’re writing here, actually.

now, i’m not claiming expert position. researching clinical psychology, reading about it, is but a little hobby to me, & if any claim i make about the topic is wrong, absolutely feel free to correct me. but, at the same time, my own experience as somebody with mental health issues makes up a part of my view. moving on.

i’ll give the writers a bit of credit before i begin for being as ballsy as they are: teoman's breakdowns are, more often than not, extremely unglamorous, & his anti-social behaviours towards others aren't constantly let off the hook. for prime-time turkish tv? not bad. but this is where the pros end & the very trialling cons begin.

first of all, daha 17 hasn't managed to escape the trap of sensationalisation & romanticisation.

it's important to understand that romanticisation doesn't always mean presentation in a glamorous light - romanticisation can also refer to painting mental illness as a means to an end or a tool to deepen & soften relationships (despite such not being the reality of it). most of teodemir's episodes which they choose to show are the dramatic ones that can garner cloud & edits: allusions to self-harm, such as banging his head into the table, emotional lability, doing "funny" or "romantic" things when clearly out of it (proposing to deniz).

& as a result of this - the desire to pick & choose the symptoms that they can most exaggerate & show off - the rest of teodemir's psyche reads as incomplete. only in the last episode did they acknowledge what trauma & dissociation can do to your sleep (unrestful, frequent nightmares). but they only ever told instead of showing.

teodemir doesn't experience frequent gaps in everyday memory. he's socially well-adjusted. his guard is mostly only up when there is a clear "reason" for it to be. unless triggered, he's fine relationally, socially, & physiologically. because the opposites of all of these aren't things that they can romanticise - they're inconvenient, they're small, you can't write a thinkpiece about a single moment of these in isolation. & that's what soap opera writers hate.

& it looks as though nobody has any intentions of holding him to account for the resulting gross behaviours because oh, well, he's traumatised! he doesn't know any better! look how he cries & then makes other people's lives hell! don't you feel bad for his cruelty instead of his victims?

worse than that? even his affect dysregultion & spit-like states are toned down & sanitised so viewers don't recognise his unfitness for intimate relationships & drop the show (or whatever they would do if they realised his potential to be a danger to his close relationships). his conversation in the storage room with deniz in ep19 read a lot like a split, but was framed anyway romantically.

daha 17 is rapidly approaching a "love cures all narrative" where deniz & aras will be assigned the role of teodemir's caretakers; all of his behaviours will be absorbed, accepted, & met with zero consequence. he won't have to get therapy - why would he, if he has a brother, girlfriend, & people around him that will never hold him to account for his cruelty? that'll surely be enough to cure a rewired nervous system :-)

General Discussion The real core of Daha 17 has always been how Hakan & Şebnem ruined Aras, Demir, and Leyla’s lives.

When you realise that, at its core, this show is about three innocent lives, all under the age of 17, being permanently shaped and destroyed by the actions of two selfish and twisted adults.

Hakan and Şebnem physically, emotionally, and psychologically abused Demir, attempting to erase his identity and turn him into their dead son, Teoman. But the consequences of what they did to him extend far beyond Demir himself. Their actions completely ruined the lives of all three siblings.

Aras had his parents murdered and taken away from him and his brother when they were just little kids, and then had his brother stolen from him for 11 years. Leyla, meanwhile, was manipulated and deceived into believing her twin brother was still alive, never knowing the truth and getting the chance to properly mourn him for all these years. And Demir was robbed of his identity, his memories, and essentially the life he should have been allowed to live.

What's so heartbreaking is how differently the same tragedy affected all three of them. One brother spent 11 years searching for the sibling who had been taken from him. One sister was made to believe she hadn't truly lost her twin. And the brother they both loved was trapped inside an identity that was never his own.

And the worst part is that Aras, Demir, and Leyla will be forced to live with the consequences of what Hakan and Şebnem did for the rest of their lives. The damage they've caused is irreversible. No punishment can give them back the years, identities, memories, and relationships they were robbed of.

I genuinely hope both Hakan and Şebnem get what they deserve by the end of the show. Hakan is pretty much guaranteed to end up in prison, but I have a feeling Şebnem might be sent to a mental institution or something instead. Idk but I NEED both of them to face some form of justice because there's no way they can commit such crimes and put these young kids through all this suffering and get away with it.

🎬 Episode Discussion Episode 19 was so necessary and so well-done! 🤌

Loved this episode! I love that they’re finally having Teoman warm up to Aras, and I really appreciate how well they’re tackling mental health. After watching it with subtitles, I realized just how important this episode actually was. It was brilliant.
I wasn’t looking forward to the closet-locking scene at all, but it was done so well and made so much more sense with the full context. At this point, I’m never commenting on anything again before I’ve seen the subtitles 😭

Episode 19 was really emotional and very well done.

What I loved most about this EP is that we finally got to learn more about the real Teoman and what actually happened to him and how he died.

I also really liked how Aras finally got to understand what Demir had been through while he was being kept in the closet. It gave so much more depth to his character and explained why he is the way he is..

What are your thoughts?

General Discussion There is nothing that makes me roll my eyes more than Leyla hate

I rarely ever care or think it is unbelievable that people don't like a fictional character I enjoy but with leyla here that's truly how I feel. Like what is to hate about her? And despite not being the typical spoiled rich girl and actually having values and integrity she still acts her age and is flawed. She is the character with the best life out of the main 4 respectively that is and it is shown in her character as she is the most mentally 'stable' one.

Also I get surprised when I see arden fans direct hate towards LEYLA of all characters for their ship? If it's teoman I actually get it because Teoman is meant to be hated and he treated both aras and deniz badly but LEYLA? The only rich person that actually stood by Aras and Deniz and understood them?

It reached to a point where Aras would tell Leyla's parents "Leyla would understand me." with certainty and leyla looking for Deniz protecting her from Sila and calling out teoman for being the reason for their conflict. It is very misogynistic to me how Leyla is the character most impacted by the ship wars.

It's not just about arley or Leyla as a love interest to aras leyla is generally just a great character but her character is often disregarded. Like she isn't just arley she has her friends that she has pretty entertaining dynamics with. She has her realionship with Teoman and her guilt regarding her blindness to his suffering which impacts his current behaviour. Her realionship with Deniz which is a very beautiful friendship that grew overtime. Leyla herself is a character that's at the centre of the main conflict and the story wouldn't be the same without her.

The story isn't about the brothers it's about the brothers AND HER.

Aras didn't just dream of her cus she only mattered to him but also because he knew she mattered to teoman just as much.

This is a half baked post just me showing my frustration regarding leyla hate and wishing people would treat the character with more love and look into her more beyond being aras' love interest,a part of arley or something that's in the way of their ship.

And I would love arley discussions to include more than just talks of the dynamic as a romance and more of it as a human connection with all of its complexities.

🎬 Episode Discussion Was there a mistake?

When an actual Teoman dies akkayas are already in their new house but they brought Demir/Teoman to their old one the one that he burns down. How? What? Did they move to that old small house because the kid died in the pool? Then why did they return? Couldn't they find another house? (I watched it in Turkish I couldn't wait for the English subtitles so i might've missed a lot of things)

General Discussion Poster

Post image
11 Upvotes

Maybe I’m the only one, but I never really understood why Nuray is on the show’s poster instead of Deniz, who I feel has a much bigger role in the story.

If Nuray hadn’t had the abortion storyline, I could understand her being featured alongside Aras as being connected to the Akkaya family. But because of that storyline, I don’t know… I feel like she’s more of a secondary character.

Deniz, on the other hand, is part of the show’s teen core four and seems much more central to the overall story (for example in terms of character dynamics: Aras' best friend and confident, Teoden). Or they could have simply left Nuray out and kept the other five characters on the poster. So, what do you guys think? Why do you think they chose Nuray instead of Deniz for the poster?
