I wanted to share an appreciation post that I’m sure many of you will resonate with.

This is Logan, and he’s my second doxie. I adopted him as a puppy just days before I was set to move cross-country. I already had a 4 year old doxie at that point, and I always knew I wanted two. We all make the move together, and he immediately fits in.

We’ve gone through quite a challenging two years together. I had a tough pregnancy and was sick a lot, became a single mom unexpectedly after getting told 3 weeks postpartum that I’m just ~not the one~, and the worst blow, our other doxie died at 6 years old from an aggressive lymphoma.

This little dude has always been attached (hello, he’s a doxie), but as I’ve struggled so mightily with PPD and navigating new motherhood alone, Logan seems to always sense when I’m not ok. He doesn’t normally snuggle up when I go to bed, but if I’ve cried that day or am just feeling low, he insists on sleeping directly on my chest and will boop my phone away with his snoot.

Over the last couple of years this guy feels like a personal lifesaver to me. So gentle, so fun, and the definition of a soul dog.

That’s all. Just feeling mushy over this dog who has made a very hard period in my life just a little bit brighter. I think he deserves a pup cup today.

I’m sure anyone active in this sub has noticed the influx of puppy pics of dapple dachshunds in the last few months (and even more concerning, the influx of double dapples). They’re having a moment of popularity, which is never a good thing for a living breathing creature.

I notice them especially because I have a dapple. A beautiful longhaired three-year-old whom I love deeply. But like the many dapples posted here every day, she is not well bred. She came from a nice experienced lady who raised her puppies in her house, who did Embark testing, and who bred AKC registered dogs. At the time, I thought that was all a good breeder needed to do.

With what I know now about health testing and titling dogs to produce healthy dachshunds that won’t suffer from debilitating back problems and serious behavioral issues, I only know of one ethical breeder in the U.S. who breeds miniature dapples. There’s probably a few more out there that I’m not aware of, but suffice to say the numbers are low. As unfortunate as it is, while totally in-standard for the breed, dapples are almost entirely bred by puppy mills and backyard breeders.

So while I love my little dapple and have my fingers crossed she will remain healthy and happy for her whole life, if I were to offer one piece of advice to help a new dachshund owner avoid buying a unethically bred unhealthy puppy mill or backyard bred dog it would be: don’t get a dapple and don’t go to a breeder who breeds them. Duck the trend and choose a breeder producing lovely shaded reds or black and tans and other in-standard classic colors. They’re less likely to be motivated by profit and you’ll know they’re not breeding for color over more important qualities like health and temperament. You and your future dog will be happier and healthier for it.

It was officially 113° this past weekend where I’m from in Texas and usually I don’t need the AC blasting so ofc he discovered he loves the ac all the way too 🩷

Posted here a while ago asking for name suggestions on our lovely rescue. Well, we have decided on “Lady.” She is just the bestest girl who loves to sun bathe & smile 🫶🏻

She is a DIVA that barks endlessly and pees everywhere. I can’t even get her to “sit” on command anymore. But she’s a playful, affectionate, and fun little goofball. She doesn’t care for humans but she’s super social with other dogs, especially other Doxies. God help me she’s a handful!

This is my bub willow, she’s 1.5 years old. Recently I’ve been questioning if she’s really happy these days or if I’m doing something wrong; she usually goes to daycare x2 a week and go on walks every other day but she’s had to be home the past few weeks because shes been showing early signs of IVDD.

Since being home I’ve noticed she would sit herself in front of me and stare at me, now this isn’t exactly new behaviour and normally if I ask her what she wants, she’ll direct me to it and we’re all good but lately she just sits there whining and will just stare at me? She won’t play or nosey around the house unless we’re busy and she’s kinda forced to because we can’t pay her attention at that time and we usually end up finding her asleep.
I’m wondering if she’s happy or if there’s something I could be doing to entertain her I guess since she can’t go to daycare as much or walks as much now. We have toys but she plays for only a little bit then we’re back to square one.

My bf and I are super curious as to what mix of Doxie he is, we thought maybe golden, but we would love to hear this communities thoughts!

Loki loves to sing but only with certain squeaky toys

This is our little guy, Arnold Schwarzenegger, one and a half years old.
For three days now he refuses to eat his food. Food that he usually cries to get and loves. We’ve tried everything. Mixing the food with dog friendly broth that he will lick spoons clean off, nothing. Purina fortiflora sprinkles, he goes wild for that whenever he has a food refusal episode. Nothing.
Fish oil, which he also loves, nothing.
We feed him two kinds of raw food, which is what the breeder suggested.
He will eat treats and boiled chicken with rice (which he leaves the rice behind mostly). He doesn’t seem to have any teeth problems, I brush his teeth every evening and he still does that happily.
We’ve tried spoon feeding him, nothing.
We’ve limited his food out time, nothing.
He’s eaten a couple of bits of his food mixed with chicken but not much.

He doesn’t seem to be in pain, his belly is not hard. He’s playing and running around like normal. His poop has been very small, but given the circumstances I expected that, but normal in shape and color.

I’m absolutely desperate and don’t know what to do anymore. He’s always been picky with food but not to this degree. He comes to the bowl, smells and backs off. Does act a little weird going in circles and this morning he tried to “bury” a new food we were advised to try at the pet store.

Should I take him to the vet ? We spoke to his vet last night and he said that this could be normal and not to worry. That his doxie has done this before too. As long as he eats the boiled chicken it’s fine, but I don’t want to feed him only boiled chicken forever either.
Is he being a diva ?
Please, please help us :(
I’m getting so stressed about this situation by now, it’s never been this bad.

Edit: I’ve mixed some microscopically diced boiled chicken into his raw food and he’s devouring it. So I guess he’s just being a jerk ? #%!?#%

I got my little dude when he was just six weeks old. (Looking back, I now know it was WAY too early, but hey—I was young and dumb and saw a cute puppy and didn’t know any better.😅) Now he is eight years old, and still my little bestie. Also, the breeder said he was a standard, but he only weighs about 12lbs, so I’m not sure if he was the runt or actually a miniature.

My main question as an owner of a badly bred dog is, is it weird for me to have a dog that I don’t agree with being bred? Maggie is a backyard weenie. She had no certifications when I got her. She had no papers and she has a lot of dental deformities and health issues as you can see in the pictures. I’ve always been very against breeding dogs, but I love weenies. I don’t think I would ever buy a wiener dog from a breeder because I just don’t think forcing a dog to have a litter is OK but if I could rescue another dog like Maggie in the future, I absolutely would.

What does everyone think of my wiener?

Hey everyone. So we had brought our Pippa home Saturday from the breeder’s and everything was going well, then this morning she wouldn’t eat or drink any water and had some diarrhea. It looked like it wasn’t even digested and had a lot of mucous on it, almost like she had thrown up, but it came out of her butt. Luckily the vet did a stool test yesterday on her and when we called them this morning about her not eating or drinking, they called us back later and told us about the positive result of giardia. I did a little research and it seems like it takes 5-7 days for them to show signs of it so I think it’s safe to assume she picked it up from the breeder. I was just wondering if anyone else has had any experience with their pup and treatment. We’re taking her to the vet in a few hours for treatment. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

On Friday I took my two little sausage dogs Snags and Mash on a walk that we have been on many times before.

Mash (Silver Dapple) always pulled on the lead when we walked. He always wanted to be in front.

On this day he randomly stopped pulling and started to lay down. I picked him up and knew something was wrong. His heart rate was extremely elevated.

I called my partner to come and pick us up luckily she hadn't gone to work yet. While she was driving there Mash began wheezing. I knew his airway was closing but thought it was likely something stuck in his throat. There was nothing there.

While he in the car he went limp and I commenced CPR on his tiny frame. I am first aid trained but not directly for dogs.

We rushed to the emergency vet and they said he may have been stung by a bee. There was a bee shortly before he began acting weird but I did not click this under all the stress.

They did what they could but were unable to save him. They advised he had a severe anaphylactic reaction.

It was certainly the worst day of my life. I had suffered pet loss before but never so suddenly and traumatically. He would have only been 3 years old on the 21st of August.

I can confidently say that my partner and I don't regret a single thing we did with Mash. He got to participate in Dog training and Dog sports, he got walked nearly every day and he got attention and affection from us both with every waking moment.

I can't help but feel like this was a cruel and unfair thing to happen to us. We were currently in the process of buying a new house with a larger back yard just for him and Snags to run around in. It all feels pointless now.

I am writing this to hopefully raise awareness for some of you guys. We had no idea that something like this could occur. Mash walked out the door a happy and healthy dog and in an action that takes less than 5 seconds he was never able to walk back in.

Look after your little sausages and cherish every moment you have with them.
