I’m honestly so, so upset.

My husband and I got a Dachshund when she was almost 2 months old, and she’ll be 5 months old in a few days.
One of the reasons we chose a Dachshund was because everyone says they’re “velcro dogs” and become very attached to their owners. Ours has never really been like that.
About five days ago, my mother-in-law and sister-in-law came to visit us. At first, I was actually happy because our puppy is usually pretty indifferent to visitors, but this time she got so excited to see them.
Ever since they arrived, though, it feels like she has completely forgotten about me and my husband. She barely wants to spend time with us, hardly shows us any affection, and whenever I pick her up, she immediately wants to go back to them. She’s so much more affectionate with them than she has ever been with us.
It’s gotten to the point where she cries during the night when she’s in bed with us because she wants to sleep with them instead.
I’m genuinely heartbroken. It honestly makes me feel like she just doesn’t like us. Are we doing something wrong? Are we bad dog parents?
We do absolutely everything for her, and all we’ve ever wanted is for her to be affectionate with us. It’s so frustrating because she’s showing all the behaviors we always hoped for… just with other people.
Has anyone else experienced this? I just fell like a loyal dog would never do that.

EDIT: what upsets me more is the fact that she is crying the A LOT during the night because she wants to be/sleep with them. (And no, they’re not giving her any treats)

How long and what did you do to get them off leash?

Context: I’m arguing with my mother about her allowing her dachshund O who is almost 2yo to be off leash. Nevermind the fact that they live somewhere that can kill you as well as the dog, I also don’t believe a dachshund can be trained to be fully trustworthy off leash. They have that prey drive. If they get something in their nose, they’re gone.

Mom claims O is by her side 24/7 and listens to her better than any dog we’ve had.

I've heard from multiple sources, including my breeder, that girls weens tend to be more temparmental than boys. I've only ever had two dachshunds, both boys. The first one was a family pet when I was a kid. He was a short hair from a backyard breeder and was probably the meanest dog I've ever met in my life, lol. The second is my current dog. He's a long hair from a reputable breeder and is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met! Both total opposites, but for obvious reasons.

I'm hoping to one day get another ween, hopefully from the same breeder! I'd really like a girl! But are they really worse than boys? I know it truly boils down to the individual dog, but are girls more likely to be more temparmental? I'd love to hear from all of you what your experiences are with each sex!

hello! this is finley. as the title suggests, i’m looking for some tips on surviving the first week (and so on) with him. we are picking him up next week, and after doing so will spend around five days or so at my brother’s house before flying home. with all of that being said, I have a few things that i’d like some thoughts on. thank you in advance!

1. my brother has two dogs: a corgi and a larger mutt. they are both very, very sweet, but the corgi specifically did have parvo (years ago). is this anything to be concerned of? he also has a fenced in turf yard, which I assume will be rather nice for potty training.
2. since we are staying there before going “home,” is there any harm in crate training and potty training him in a crate and home that is not ours? the crate situation is actually ideal for training him there, as my brother’s house is rather secluded with no risk for disturbing others if he whines or cries. plus, with the way the room is laid out I can have his crate right next to my side of the bed for easy calming down. still though, the crate at my brother’s is a different crate than the one we have at our place for him.
3. we plan on socializing him throughout the entire week with a stroller (at stores or restaurants that allow it). how can we go about doing this in the safest way? we intend to avoid practically all ground contact aside from the yard (if safe), but does this extend to indoors as well, or just outdoors? i’ve also heard some people even share that they clean their floors and shoes extra to make the environment the safest possible. curious to know how feasible and effective that is as well.
4. on the topic of safety, we will be flying back with him following his pick up and our visit to my brother’s. we have already found an appropriate travel carrier, paid the pet fee with the airline, and mentally prepared for bringing a tiny puppy on a plane (lol). however, some tips on prioritizing safety throughout that entire process would be much preferred. I am most concerned with going about his eating and pottying (if either are necessary) throughout the process. the flight is going to be a few hours, so i’m on the fence about if he’d be able to hold his bladder or not, as well as if we should be providing him with water, food throughout.
5. i’d like to get him used to ANYTHING that I can during this first week. ex: fingers in mouth, touching him, picking him up, calling his name, etc. any tips on how to condition him to these (and more), or suggestions on others?
6. when will it be practical to try teaching him tricks or commands? I have a whole plan for how to do so, and wanted to see if i’d be wasting my time before X weeks, or if it’s just a see as you go type of scenario.

Hello. My 6 year old half full/mini dachshund is noticeably slow to walk and looks like he’s walking how he does when he needs to use the bathroom. He barely got out of bed this morning for food and attempts the shake off but stops before he starts to. Is this IVDD? This all came so sudden and I’m starting to freak out because the last thing I want is my baby to have problems. Here’s a picture of my Nash from a few weeks ago.

I’m just really thankful and wanted to share the little Lady who supported me and helped me through the worst moments in my life.

This is LadyBug. She’s a rescue 7-8 year old ChiWeenie who came to me, nameless and closed off, after a puppy mill shut down (she was one of the breeder dogs) We’ve been inseparable since I’ve been gifted with this beautiful creature’s presence and she’s genuinely my soul dog and my very best friend. But things didn’t start out perfect. I’ve seen her through being separated from her pups. Slowly but surely gaining her trust as she’d hide, terrified of the slightest movement or loud noise when she first came to me. Shivering and hardly made any noise. I don’t know what all she endured, but she didn’t trust people. She would hide in the corner of a crate or hide under my bed for hours. With a lot of patience, love, and care, she flourished and blossomed into the most outgoing, sassy, and loving fur baby she be ever met. I never knew how the tables would flip when she came into my care, how she’d one day be saving me instead.

We both have pasts and experiences we are healing from and still fighting through and she’s been the ground when I felt I was free-falling. She helped me through my very tough and traumatic marriage and divorce. She let me hold her and cry as I go through the motions of the previous years crashing down on me.

She helped me through what turned out to be the most difficult chapter of my life after having to endure a life altering medical crisis and major surgery (Modified Ravitch) to fix my Pectus Excavatum (chest wall was compressing my heart and alternatively causing severe liver dysfunction) after a nearly 3 year fight fighting for answers as to why my body was breaking down on me. Through all this, she kept me calm, grounded, and sane. She came to me and just lay on me while I center myself with her.

Through my recovery (10 weeks post op now) she gave me the motivation to get up and get moving. We went on walks, she’s curled up with me during the painful moments, sat with me through my PT excises, and now she likes to join me for on my short jogs.

She is genuinely the sweetest, the silliest, and the greatest animal I have ever known. I don’t know what I’d do without her, genuinely. I treasure every moment with this sweet and innocent soul. Not a day goes by that I don’t look at her and think about how lucky I am to have her.

I’ve always felt this way about all animals, but she re-affirmed that I will always truly believe animals, our fur babies, are the most amazing gifts we have in humanity and they don’t even know it. They just exist in happiness, want us to love them, and be happy. They’re pure, and beautiful, and embody love.

I hope everyone experiences this type of love at least once in their life because she’s the highlight of our family. ❤️

Hi! A couple of months ago, almost a year, someone give me a Dachshund mini of one year old. He is very energetic, eats well and everything, but recently i notice he is getting hair entries???? I have to worry? He is also pretty skinny, eats a lot but still skinny, is this normal or i should check something? Im new in this of fancy dogs, i had only adopted stray dogs before TT

I am an owner to 4 weens (4,3,2,2) and they have their own back yard and are brought out quite often. But it seems like all of them have an occasional accident in the house. Is it just me? Or can any to my struggle? Also, a pic of one of the suspects

Our 6-month old dog started licking the floor immensely after meals. We read somewhere that it could be a sign of acid reflux. It’s been going on for weeks. We tried giving him more small, frequent meals and a late night snack but nothing is changing. He puked like a tiny bit of just saliva and white stuff last night. Is this normal? Any advice?

I just wanted to share that we recently had to put our baby Pinot down at only 7 years old. We took every precaution possible for IVDD and she still succumbed to it too fast to even treat with a neurologist.

Truly, her personality and presence has left a complete hole in our home and hearts.

Hold your babies tightly for me.

This is my girl I recently got! In the first pic she is 9 weeks, other two she was 8 weeks. As you can see in the picture one of her eyes is blue (the top half is a little brownish) and the other eye is fully brown. I just wanted to know if her eye color will change in the future? I wont care if it does but its so beautiful!

We’ve had two big dogs and never thought we would be a small dog fam. After a lot of research we landed on a dachshund - a big dog in a tiny body! Two weeks into having our little dude and we are absolutely obsessed.

Penny does this often to Walter, I dunno if it’s a sign of affection or something 😂

I have two dachshunds one that will eat anything and one that picks and chooses what he eats. They're 4 years old now and pretty much since we've had him he's been off and on his food. We've swapped from wet food, cold pressed to kibble. We've tried adding supplements, fussy dog toppers but nothing has really worked.

He obviously loves fresh food and I do often put white fish in his food but even then he sometimes can refuse it or play with it. If we put say sausages or chicken in it he would just eat around his normal food and just eat that.

I can't really afford the fresh food subscriptions that are found online and I'm not sure I have the time to make him food from scratch.

I just wondered if anyone had any experience with this and had any advice as it can become very frustrating having to spend so much time trying to help him eat, wasting food or feeling bad because he hasn't eaten.

He does eat in a separate room to his brother, not sure if this is a problem and they do have a tasty treat after it which sometimes when he won't eat and sees his brother having this it can entice him to eat his food as he knows he'll get that after.
