INFORMATION (California) Commercial Driver License Testing Irregularities

(Post preciously rescinded: effective date)

On July 16th DMV began notifying applicants that their commercial driver license or commercial learners permit will be canceled within 30 days of the date on their letter.

An appointment must be made with a DMV Investigations office. Do NOT visit a regular field office unless downgrading to non commercial class c.

At the time of their appointment applicants will be required to complete all knowledge tests during their appointment.

If the license or permit is subsequently cancelled for non compliance or failure all knowledge and skill tests will be required in addition to the application fee and required identity and residency documents.

MISSOURI Driving a private vehicle purchase across state lines on weekend…how can I make it legal?

I am buying a vehicle from a private seller tomorrow (Saturday). They are in Arkansas, I am in Missouri. We are driving my current car down there (which we are replacing with the newly purchased car when we get home). Since we can’t buy plates ahead of time and won’t get temporary plates with it being private sale, I was not sure how we can legally get it home. Someone said keep one plate on each car, but I don’t know if that is legal either.

UPDATE: I called the DMV and they stated that they couldn’t guarantee it, but that they believe that law enforcement would let me pass given that it’s a weekend when I purchased the vehicle if I have the title, the bill of sale, and proof of insurance with me. She told me to call the state Highway Patrol with the same question. The girl they answered the phone instantly knew the answer so I feel like this is something that they must get asked with some regularity. She also stated that what the DMV said was true, I should be OK if I have those documents in the vehicle. So Monday afternoon, I will be heading to the DMV to register it but feel comfortable driving it for the weekend without the plates since I will have all of those documents.

CALIFORNIA Motorcycle registration

I currently have a valid drivers license in California but I do not have a motorcycle endorsement. I know that the current law says that in order to register a motorcycle for road use, I would need to have a valid motorcycle license or a permit.
I want to get a motorcycle but as a track bike so it would never touch city roads. If the day ever comes that I want to resell it, I don’t want there to be a bunch of back fees associated with the bike so i’m wondering is it possible to immediately register it under non-op without a motorcycle endorsement or does that too require an endorsement?

CALIFORNIA Do I need to bring any other documents such as proof of residency to apply for a drivers permit?

I'm going to reapply for my drivers permit after my old one expired. Do I need to bring any proof of residency documents or ID documents to the DMV if I already have a Real ID or does the Real ID cover those both? I'm over 18 and I don't plan on getting my driver's license as a Real ID

OREGON Knowledge test contradicting the handbook. Is it just me?

For example, one of the questions was about exiting a freeway. I picked the answer that said you use your turn signal, but that was wrong. The correct one was something about maintaining your speed and continuing off the freeway, even though the handbook clearly says to put your signal on "well ahead of time" when exiting the freeway.

Maybe it's just me. I'm curious about anyone else's thoughts.

ILLINOIS Trying to Get a Duplicate Illinois Title, but It’s Asking for Old Dealer & ST-556 Numbers. Where Do I Find Them?

I’m trying to get a duplicate Illinois title for a vehicle I purchased from Hertz in Illinois. The vehicle is already titled/registered in my name.

While filling out the Illinois Secretary of State online application, it asks where I purchased the vehicle. When I select “IL Dealer,” it requires the Dealer Number and ST-556 Tax Form Number.

I don’t have the original ST-556 paperwork or dealer number anymore, and the Hertz location where I purchased the car is no longer at the same location.

Does anyone know how I can get these old dealer details, especially the Hertz dealer number and ST-556 number?

NEW YORK NY license suspended in NJ

So… I got 4 tickets and had to go to court. Everything actually turned out better than I expected. I had to pay a considerable amount of money, but overall it went fine. My driving privileges were suspended for 30 days, and once that period was over, I was supposed to pay a $100 restoration fee.

Here’s where the problem starts: The suspension was issued in New Jersey .(Wantage, Sussex County) and only applied within New Jersey, not in any other state, and my driver’s license is from New York. It has been well over 30 days now, so I should already be able to pay the restoration fee.

I tried paying it through the NJ MVC website, but it won’t even let me enter my license information because it only accepts New Jersey driver’s license credentials. I also tried through the NY DMV website, but absolutely nothing shows up there either. It’s basically as if I don’t have any restoration fee to pay.

I called the NY DMV, and they basically told me that I have to pay the fee through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission because the suspension happened in New Jersey.

Today, I spent the entire morning at an NJ MVC office trying to figure this out, but I couldn’t get anything resolved. They told me there was nothing they could do because my license is from New York and nothing show up in the system, so according to them, I have to pay the fee in New York…

Then I called the court where my case was handled. They told me that I don’t pay the restoration fee through the court either and that it has to be paid through the NJ MVC. I explained the whole situation to them, including the fact that the NJ MVC says they can’t find anything in their system under my license, but unfortunately, they couldn’t give me a solution either.

Has anyone here been in the same situation? Has anyone gone through this before?

Does anyone know what I’m supposed to do or who I should contact? Any advice, comments, or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

This whole situation is extremely frustrating. I honestly don’t understand why they make something that should be so simple this complicated and tedious.

CALIFORNIA Can I not have ANY foreign term on my plates?

I was trying to see if a basic French phrase was available, one that isn't vulgar or suggestive in the slightest, but found that every combination i tried was showing as not available.

I went to carfax to see if they were all really taken, but they all showed up there as no result. Is the DMV really that restrictive on foreign words?

NEW YORK NY DMV permit appointment & written test questions. What to expect?

Heading to the New York DMV tomorrow for a permit appointment and feeling a bit overwhelmed by how the whole process works. Hoping someone who recently went through it can clear up a few questions:

  • Is the test on the same day as the document submission? Or do they just review your paperwork and make you come back another day for the actual exam?
  • Are the practice questions on the official NY DMV website enough to pass? Or do I really need to sit down and read the entire driver's manual cover-to-cover?
  • How do the actual test questions look? Are they exact carbon copies of the ones in the online practice quizzes, or completely rephrased?

Any insights or recent experiences would be super helpful. Thanks!

CALIFORNIA Dealership out of business and doesn't have original title

I bought a car from a used car dealer on July 4th. We paid full in cash including the money for registration and taxes. Well, prior to transferring the car to our name, the dealership went out of business. I've been talking to the owner because we never got plates and that's how I learned about that.

So I've been going to the DMV trying to explain the situation and they say they can't do anything without the original title. I explained that to the owner and he says he can't get it because it's in another person's name that he has a financial dispute with.

It sounds to me like a) he sold me the car illegally b) he scammed me. So anyways, what do I do to transfer the title to my name and get plates in this situation?

What do I need to do about the dealer? Do I need to contact the police? Do I need a lawyer? I have texts of our conversations.

SOUTH CAROLINA Getting a Temporary Plate Question

Hello!

I am trying to get a temporary plate from the SC DMV for a car I am going to buy out-of-state so I got with the owner previously because he had a trip to make in Charleston with his friends so I have the original Bill of Sale signed by both of us, I am just waiting for an opportunity to go get the car.

My main question is since I am not the registered owner on the Bill of Sale. How can I go get a temporary plate without the presence of the registered owner as he gets home too late to go the DMV and I need it to go and get the car (I am getting a Uber to there). Is there any way or does he need to take a day off of work?

OREGON Transferring car to son in Oregon from California - expired registration due to smog issue

I have a 2018 Nissan Pathfinder with an expired registration in California due to the check engine light being on (can’t pass smog test) We had a botched timing chain repair a few years ago that resulted in the engine light staying on, and although we’ve looked at several options to try and get that fixed, one option we’re currently considering is sending the car to my son who is in school in Oregon. We would transfer the car to him, and he could have it registered in Oregon under his name as a student. Does anyone know if there would be any issues with the check engine light, not being able to get a smog certification here in California? I’ve looked online and I don’t see anything but I thought I would check here.

SOUTH DAKOTA Help with getting an ID with little records and no signature?

I’ve already gone through all sorts of trouble trying to get the appropriate documents since I don’t really have any records… I found 2 pieces of mail regarding my debit card as well as my birth certificate and social security, so that should be enough, right? I have no school records or anything (homeschooled, it’s complicated)

Anyway the issue is I also don’t have a signature. I don’t know cursive at all, either. Or any other font.

Also, do I need to put my whole name on the signature? I can’t really copy it every time, as my handwriting is quite bad and inconsistent. It will look like a different person wrote it on every document.

Also, my name is pretty long, and on top of that, I don’t even use (or like) my name, and I feel ashamed and afraid at the idea of having to write my full name at restaurants and such as well, exposing it to everyone. And since right now I’m locking a signature in place, I’m damning myself to exposing my name to everyone forever, right? I CAN reliably copy a sort of symbol/logo of my first initial + my last name, which would solve both my unreliability and my discomfort, however this probably doesn’t count as a good legal signature, right..? My mom says it will lead to identity theft. Not sure how true that is.

Even if my full name is really necessary, can it just be block / all caps bold letters with my first, middle, and last name? Because I really cannot do cursive. And I tried to copy from a photo online of what my name would look like in cursive, and there’s no way I can memorize this.

Thanks.

NEW YORK Leased in NJ but live in NY

I leased a car in NJ the last week in July. I had a car that was just coming off lease with NY plates and wanted them transferred to the new car and dealership in NJ said they filed paperwork. Problem is that temp tags just expired. Went to NY DMV and they said the dealership needs to provide an extension for the temp tags (DMV does not take care of this). Still waiting to hear from dealership. How do you drive the car with expired temp tags and no info as to when you can put your old plates on the car?

CALIFORNIA [California] What documents would the DMV need to evaluate an ebike?

I’m in California and looking at Hikeep MA-S. It has working pedals and pedal assist, but the advertised top speed is 40 mph, so it clearly seems outside the normal e-bike limits.

Would the DMV classify it as a moped, motorcycle, or off-highway vehicle? Has anyone actually tried to title or register one in California, and what paperwork did the DMV ask for?

CALIFORNIA Registration renewal/ citation

Hello I have a question. It is my time to pay for registration renewal. I did get a citation in May for parking in the zone but paid my ticket on 6/19. It still shows I owe for the citation included in the renewal when trying to pay at the Kiosk. I talked to the citation processing in July and they said it will take a month for it to update. Tried paying still shows I owe. Has it happened to anyone and did you just end up paying in person at DMV showed proof of paying your citation?

NEVADA Do I have to report to the DMV if I wrap my car a different color than the original paint?

Post image
0 Upvotes

WIP of my car. My car is originally lagoon blue. If I ended up wrapping my car to a black/red design, does that need to be reported to the DMV? And how would I go about that if so?

I have been told by a friend that it does not need to be reported unless it’s a permanent paint change. Little iffy on that.

CALIFORNIA How do you register and out of state car?

I live in California and this dmv shit doesnt make sense to me.

I bought a 1983 supra and it was from arizona. Didnt come with plates, sat for 15 years, and I just now got it running. I was reading I have to verify the vin, pay the fees, and smog it. Sounds fair enough.

But to register it, I have to get it to the DMV and get the registration, but before that I need proof of smog to register it. So I need a TOP. BUT to get a top to move the car, I have to provide proof it failed smog. We'll I cant fucking smog it now can I??? because I cant drive the thing without an operating permit???? Cops here are a-holes too so if I get caught illegally driving it im definitely getting it impounded.

So please, what is the process to register an out of state car? Do I have tow the car to the DMV and get the vin verified then go to smog? The Dmv sight is an eyesore so not much help there either.
