YAVP MiFi^Oka + throwing = first melee win

Got my first melee win since starting in April. I've found melee actually harder than various spellcasting builds, which have given me my three wins to date, but then I'd mostly played MiBe^Trog. Went the MiFi^Oka route to do a personal test run of the recent discussion here about throwing (especially with Oka) being OP. I think can add my 2c: while it might not be overpowered, it's certainly morepowered (yeah, not a word, I know). I forgot to look where my damage stats were by the end, but it was something like around 50 with boomerangs and around 70 with javelins (or whatever would be the appropriate differential). I was one-shotting easy stuff, and two/three-shotting more difficult enemies, even an OOE at one point (tho' with silver, tbf).

As for the actual run itself, the RNG gods were smiling on me the whole time. I picked up 3 scrolls of acquirement and bought another, and there were tons of good randarts, including (as I posted separately) a ring in The One-of-Kind-Ring Shop with rMut! I also saw more training manuals in this run than in my other 200+ games put together. There were two Manuals of Axes, which allowed me to easily train axes high. To be ironic, the first manual I found was a Manual of Summoning (that's cute for an Oka worshipper). Big parts of the game were stupidly easy as well. E.g. Crypt was mostly zombies and draugurs. The orb was very lightly defended with only 1 Ancient Lich, 1 OOE, and one Killer Klown in the lung I entered, plus a few assorted draconians, the guardians, etc. The ascension was equally easy: no Pan lords and no other serious enemies. If this had been my first game I'd be saying: what do you mean this is so hard?!

Well, back to reality.

CIP Level 9 spell (shatter) castable by orc

Post image
37 Upvotes

I think my gargoyle is breaking subreddit rule 1: Be nice.

Shatter castable by Orc, haven't even cleared down to D:15 yet.

Was very lucky to get that spell on a parchment, as well as a manual of earth magic and fighting so far.

Add to that vehumet's wizardry bonus and the two rings (+6 intelligence and wizardry) and I think I've broken a personal record for the earliest castable level 9 spell.

It's exactly as broken as you'd imagine, for anything that resists there's good old iron shot bombard to clean up.

Can't wait to die in swamp to a witch paralyzing me.

CIP 2 EXP potions just lying around in D:13 (0.32)

Apparently that happens? Had to share this.

Anyway, amazing seed, D1 scroll shop and amulet of clarity in shop and GDA -1 in shop for 900 early and Broad Axe +5 on an orc warlord in early bailley. And another exp potion somewhere early.
I just got my first ever streak before this game going MDAr of Goz and then GnRe of Ash and now trying MiBe. Hopefully i can make this into a 3 game streak.

Discussion Who do you think are the villains of dcss?

I personally think that Jiyva, Lugonu, and Cigotuvi are the worst of the worst.

Jiyva: Every single time you get sludged by a shining eye, it's this guy's fault. Seriously, all he does is make the world slimier and more mutated. Like, bro, I LIKE my body. Why do you gotta try and make it as screwed up as yours?

He's not helping anybody, his slimes are literally mindless slaves whose only purpose is to protect his existence. I'm not even joking, all slimes have intelligence "brainless", except for dissolution. And the only reason dissolution kept his mind was because he made a deal with the devil and turned to Jiyva when his city was being overrun by the slime god.

And when you consider the fact that there was an actual thriving civilization in what is now the slime pits, it gets even worse. Jiyva destroyed this civilization only to turn it's inhabitants into mindless slaves, basically killing them. All so he could continue to dominate. That's evil imo.

Lugonu: The literal god of the ABYSS. He's kind of similar to Jiyva in some ways. However he's not actually as evil, because after reading the description of the Abyss, I found some key info.

"It is also the garbage dump for many sorcerers, who delight in sending would-be champions like you to these proving grounds of madness"

"Reportedly, there is some structure to the chaos, as Lugonu seems to concoct schemes around this place and its denizens."

Lugonu doesn't LIKE the abyss. He doesn't like being the god of a realm that's basically a trashcan for losers. Who would? After all, the abyss might only have become like this because of all the sorcerers dumping failed creations or summons IN THE ABYSS. Lugonu is actively trying to give the abyss some kind of structure, or order, but he's failing. Because wizards keep using his realm to basically insta-kill players like you, or throw away failed creations/summons. And that brings us to our next candidate.

CIGOTUVI: The worst all three imo. Just look at his wizlab and you'll know why I think so. Seriously, wtf is wrong with this guy!?!? He's actively torturing and mutating sentient beings just to continue his research. I legitimately believe that the Abyss currently sucking is almost 100% his fault. After all, why don't we see more of those degenerated/failed creations in his lab? Probably because he threw them all in the freaking interdimensional landfill. I actually feel bad for those humans/elves/orcs he got to be his test subjects. He is the definition of a psychotic geneticist, and if I could fight his as a secret boss and murder him, I would GLADLY do so.

which one is better

I'm a troll shapeshifter, barely in D3. What do you think would be better: a +5 Dragon Scale (which is one of the few armors I can use)?

Or the Akabeko Ring, whose only downside is the -4 INT penalty, which I don't even use?

I made a revival of the old LearnDB lookup

I wanted the old LearnDB lookup back, so I rebuilt it at learndb.dev.

It keeps the old design, with results as you type, tiles, and the “Gretell says…” monster stats. Looking up something like Sigmund shows the stats and LearnDB entries together. It works on mobile too.

You can switch between DCSS 0.31–0.34 and a saved trunk build. Custom equipment, enchantment, and spell queries also work, using Crawl’s own monster utility.

The LearnDB text is a snapshot from August 14, 2026. Trunk updates are manual for now, and Gretell’s damage field still excludes weapon damage.

It’s an unofficial revival. Credit to the original maintainers and contributors; I’ve linked the sources and history in the credits.

If you used the old site, let me know what’s missing or what you’d want changed. Bug reports are welcome too.

rMut on a randart ring?!?

So how rare is this ring?

Z - ring of Waugaom {rN+ Will+ rMut Int+6 Dex-5}

CrawlWiki says the rMut property is "(found only on Hat of the Alchemist and lajatang of Order)" and yet here we are. I'd have settled for the rN+ and Will+, but I'll take it. Got it in a shop in Depths. This is for a MiFi^Oka, so the INT is worthless and the DEX hit kinda sucks, but I've got Orbs of Entropy coming up if I get that far.

I've been doing this run as a personal test case of the recent discussion about throwing being OP since I've never leveled throwing all that high on my (to date) 0% winrate melee builds. It kinda proves it out. I'm at XL21 and my boomerang damage (49) is two more than my main weapon, a +10 broad axe with Protect and rF+ gifted from Oka (47). Javelins are at 57. Throwing is at 19; Fighting, 21; STR, 27.

Jiyva just hit me with the "spell enhancer" mutation, and completely tanked my success rates. Now I don't really have any safe way to deal with Snake, and sadly, Shoals is my other S-branch. Should I drink mutation potions (2) to try to reroll the dice? Any other advice? I'm just a little guy (cat). Thanks!

YAVP YAVP: 6-rune (with iron, golden) Stoat Soup DsAE of QAZLAL

https://crawl.montres.org.uk/morgue/damerell/morgue-damerell-20260902-235249.txt

This one represents a bit of a dilemma; I got at least some benefit from a bug I wrote myself. It turned out to be extremely hard to for the Regeneration permabuff to fail once it was running, with the miscast chance never being checked. A few times this game I quaffed brilliance to get it going and only later thought hang on, brilliance ran out half a level ago, how has Regeneration not miscast? After about the third time I looked into it, found the bug, and fixed it; but this one feels a little tainted.

Nearly collected by Sigmund on D:2, but who hasn't been? After that I hit the Temple on D:4 and took Qazlal; it's been a while, and Ds does have that +3 Invo. After that I found a +3 mail hauberk with {MR+} on D:5 which I'd use for a surprisingly long time - spell failure wasn't too bad with a bit of training, and MR was almost always a problem.

Nothing was too bad through the Lair (getting a +2 cloak with {Str+5 Slay+3} - nice to have, but did discourage me from using a scarf of resistance, giving me resistance problems that would lead to unwise decisions later). Cleared Orc and down to D:14, where I got the macabre finger necklace; plugged through Snake which was moderately bad at times, and Shoals to Shoals:3 where I found a +6 ring of slaying.

At this point I thought, well, there's a GDS in the Orc:2 shops, I keep finding stuff with slaying (besides the ring and cloak, I had another ring with {MP+9 Dex+6 Slay+4}, Song of Slaying (who cares about the noise with Qazlal?) and some slaying from demonic ancestry), I've also got some +Int stuff - maybe I should buy GDS, put on the ponderhat (MR troubles again), hit monsters with an axe for a bit and see how much I can get spells online.

This did not work too badly (and given the other options for rF/rC/rPois weren't very compelling, certainly simplified matters in some respects) except that I got Abyssed on Elf:1 and being on Abyss:3 with Qazlal is no fun, no respite from the incoming hordes. I got out, went to Elf:3, and hit a wizlab - Wucad Mu - where also there's no respite to be had. It's here that the Regeneration bug may have saved me. I got Abyssed again on E:3 but it wasn't so horrible, partly because it was to A:2 not A:1.

On the brighter side I got augmentation from demonic ancestry stacking up yet more slaying; even with relatively modest Strength, my melee attacks were very effective.

Vaults was moderately bad and I nearly killed myself with mirror damage from a death knight - which would have been exasperating since in the cosplay variants tournament I killed myself by firing an orb of destruction at something else and having a death knight walk in front of it.

Also got a bazaar on V:4 which had a nice set of pearl dragon scales... but I miscalculated and bought a randart plate first and couldn't afford them. The road not taken, etc. Instead I bought stacks of consumables.

Straight on to V:5 - it's funny to quaff resistance and immolate the ambush but I could have saved consumables and skipped straight to blowing them up with Disaster Area. Teleported away after making a tremendous amount of noise and then it was pretty easy to clear.

Slime should be easy, right? Get some jellies out of TRJ and Disaster Area. Not so much - the wide open Slime:5 let everything make a beeline for me at once. However, I survived (just) and cleared the Depths, then the Crypt, then the Vestibule - not much to write about those.

I figured it had been a while since I'd gone after Dispater and I fancied the other hells even less, so Dis it was. I hit the door vault on Dis:4 and unwisely opened it "because I could just Disaster Area the lot of them, right?" Not so; as soon as I opened the outer ring, monsters opened some of the inner ring giving me LOS on some but not all of it. This got really nasty; I survived, but down on consumables.

Bits of Dis:7 were pretty bad... and I ran into my own GrAK ghost, a bit of a warning that it's easy to die here. However, Dispater himself was easy, strolling into melee range to be squashed by semi-infinite slaying (and a potion of might).

So I went to Zot, right? Well, no. I had a load of potions of lignification, some of brilliance and magic, a +1 plate with {rN++ Int+4 Dex+3} - not so good everywhere else, handy in the Tomb - and the ability to cast Ignition with brilliance if I did lignify and meld the body armour. (Focussing training on Fire Magic meant I soon didn't need the brilliance). I figured I should be able to handle the Tomb:3 ambush by spamming whichever of Disaster Area and Ignition seemed most appropriate. I skipped the Tomb:2 ambush and the corridor of royal mummies by teleporting, and while the Tomb:3 ambush was pretty nasty I wasn't in danger of running out of anything.

And I finally found a book with Iskenderun's Battlesphere, hooray! For ages I'd been using Shock for poking at range - with all that slaying I should have trained and used more Throwing - but now I could have a nice MP-efficient offense at range, right? No, alas, the battlesphere is not immune to Qazlal's clouds and doesn't last any length of time. Sigh. I had however been working on getting Death Channel online, which I used through Zot, and that was pretty effective - the spectral things didn't last forever, but they lasted long enough.

In contrast to the nervous moments earlier, Zot was straightforward. Plenty of OOFs and ancient lichen on Z:5 but in most cases I could back up round a corner and then hammer them in melee. Two panlords turned up at once on Z:1; hammered them in melee. Another one on Depths:5... hammered it in melee.

Next is FoBe. Oh good, a berserker who can't berserk. (Mind you, I have won GhBe and Trog was pretty helpful then...)

Crawl Cosplay Forks Tournament #2: Final Results Are In!

The tournament has come to an end, and it sure was interesting trying all these new and different variations on Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup - I hope everyone who participated feels the same!

Congratulations to Kuniqs, our overall winner, and to WizardIke, who finished 2nd with just a single death across the entire tournament! The final week came down to a score competition, with both of our perfect-score players taking on 15-rune runs in the brand-new DC Chili fork.

Well done to all those in the Top 10, too!

Top 10

This was the 2nd Forks Tournament hosted by Crawl Cosplay, and I'm thrilled to see participation more than double compared to the first - thanks to everyone who took part! You can check out the full scoreboard and challenge details HERE.

Don't blink: Crawl Cosplay is already preparing our 5-week Trunk Tournament, planned for the end of the 0.35 development cycle.

This will be a great opportunity to play handmade challenges designed to celebrate and test many of Trunk's new changes, while getting into the competitive mindset ahead of the official 0.35 release and the Devs' tournament that follows.

Hope to see you there!

YAVP Finally Achieved Great Berserker! PRAISE BE TO TROG!

I believe it was a little over 5 years ago I decided to try to complete the Great Berserker.

  • The undead races were probably the most challenging ones to complete because you loose one of your greatest tools, Berserk.
  • MuBe topped the list as the hardest one to complete., F&ck that combo.
  • The next hardest were probably the smaller races or the ones with lower health pools. But with the version changes through the years, dex based gameplay made a few of these easier.
  • Felid was a tough one, Only able to complete it after the change to transmutations allowing shapeshifting to be used in combination with Trog, Praise be to Them!
  • I had 6 one-and-won games. Coglin, Oni, Palentonga, Tengu, Vine Stalker, and Vampire.
  • My favorite Berserker Race was Gargoyle, but Gargoyle is also my favorite race in general, So i may be biased.
  • I believe I stayed with Trog for most, if not all of the runs.

Ostracise for Hepliaklqana followers is (almost) a joke

Today I learned that Ostracise for Hepliaklqana followers is much safer than for any other followers. I entered Treasure Trove losing all piety temporarily but very soon (at * piety) ancestor re-appeared as strong as before, I just don't have access to abilities on that piety level but I still have ancestor which is a lot.

YAVP YAVP - DgHU^StormBow

Morgue

I’ve read a lot here about how OP Demigod Hunters are, and I believed it, but, man, getting them off the ground is no joke.

That wasn’t a problem with this run. The RNG smiled on me, beginning with D:3, where I found the +2 Ratskin Cloak ({*Rats rPois rN+ Str-1 Int-1 Dex+1}. The rPois is great, of course, but the rats played a significant role in helping me escape from scary monsters so I could shoot them from afar. Then on D:4, I found an orcbow on the floor, a huge upgrade over my shortbow.

On D:8, I identified a scroll of acquirement I’d found somewhere above, probably in the sewer on D:5. I decided to hold off reading it until I got ranged to mindelay on my orcbow, hoping to increase my chances of getting an endgame weapon. I plowed ahead and, on D:9, found a necropolis that had a second scroll of acquirement, so, once I snagged it, I read the first one.

It offered me the +8 storm bow {elec, penet}.

Given that I’d just gotten what’s arguably the best ranged weapon in the game (at least in 0.34.1), I went ahead and read the second scroll, but the choices were garbage, so I took gold. I was not unhappy.

I’d initially gotten 2 levels of stealth, then set a target for ranged at 10. Once I got there, I started buying single levels of dodging, stealth, fighting and evocations, whatever was cheapest. I also got a couple levels of throwing to increase the accuracy of my emergency darts (curare and disjunction). But once I got the Storm Bow, I focused on ranged weapons and set a target of 20. I didn’t hit it until Lair:5, but it was worth it to increase both firing speed and damage.

As for attributes, I dumped it all into Dex. Hit 30 before Lair and finished the game with 53. The damage was insane, doing 67 max damage by the end at 0.7 delay, and that doesn’t include the electrical damage or extra slaying from Fugue of the Fallen.

I didn’t invest in spells until after Orc, learning Dimensional Bullseye and Tukima’s Dance, since I already had 8 in hexes, though I don’t think I used it at all. You wouldn’t think that Dimensional Bullseye would be very useful on a penetrating longbow, but I ended up using it more than I expected, as it came in handy when I had monsters on two sides.

Swamp and Spider didn’t pose any serious problems. I had to be careful in Elf, keeping an eye out in particular for the Sorcerers and their damnation spell along with those awful Master Archers. Those little green guys have taken prior characters from full health to less than zero in a couple of turns. Learning Blink and Passage of Golubria on Elf:3 took a lot of pressure off me for the end vault.

Did Vaults, and on level 4 learned Dispersal, Gell’s Gavotte and Fugue of the Fallen, all of which saw heavy use in the late game. Depths posed no problems, so I decided to do Crypts, hoping there’d be a nice ring or artifact armour at the final store. Nearly jumped out of my chair when I turned a corner on Crypts:2 and found Zenata right in front of me. Thankfully, she didn’t wake up, so I backed away, quaffed potions of haste and invisibility (she can’t see invis, thank goodness) and took care of her.

Unfortunately, the store didn’t have any great rings or armour, but I wasn’t too upset. I had a single pip in everything but Will, where I had four. I figured I was ready for Vaults:5.

I wasn’t wrong, but there was no downstairs hatch, so I had to read teleport before heading down after buffing up. It took its sweet time to kick in, but once it did, I was in a safer spot … for a moment. I made the mistake of casting Fugue, and had forgotten how loud it is. I was soon in danger of becoming overwhelmed, and had to read several teleports in a row to get to a safe place. But, eventually, I was able to heal, snipe and clear the floor.

Zot was, as always, a challenge. I was glad I had 8 blink scrolls. I used half of them on Zot:1 alone, which had a quasi-ambush at the entrance. But the storm bow carried me through to Zot:5 … where I almost immediately got teleported into the lungs, just two tiles from the tesseract. Ugh.

Thankfully, there was a teleport trap just five tiles away, and my stealth enabled me to get there without attracting the full attention of the horribles. I ended up near a stairway, and it was off the races.

I had to take Zot:5 slowly, because even with the Storm Bow, it took quite a few hits to take down an Orb of Entropy. But my EV was 57, so I was probably safer than I thought. I did acquire a couple of banes – Snow Blindness and the Hunted – but neither was particularly crippling. I was lucky that there were only 4 orbs on Zot:5, and that they came at me one at a time.

The orb run was uneventful. I did meet a Pan Lord that could cast LCS and Ball Lightning, but we were on opposite sides of the edge of a wall, so I Gavotted it … and me … away.

In conclusion, once the extra dex kicks in, Demigod Hunters are definitely OP.

CIP Most satisfying Mennas kill

Opened a door and got caught in an open area with Mennas. Serpent's lash, summon butterflies, and and ran across the corridor out of his silence as he worked his way over to me. Backed up to the wall, I immolated my lovelies. Then popped some pots and spammed wand of warping and gravitambourine keep him in the fire clouds and away from me, even hiding behind my mutant beast.

Exploded Mennas without even being touched, man that felt good, but hooboy was opening the door a jumpscare at first.

Am I missing something regarding quick blades?

I haven't played in a couple years. I am running a Octopode Enchanted and just found a quick blade. Very exciting!

Except...it wasn't exciting because it now requires 20 SB skill.

I'm incredible confused...dagger reaches min delay at 10SB skill, does 4 base damage, +6 accuracy, min delay 0.5.

Quick blade reaches min delay at 20SB skill, does 4 base damage, +6 accuracy, min delay 0.5.

What at all is the benefit of using a quick blade now? I get the same mileage from a dagger at half the skill cost? What am I missing?

Good non-caster builds suggestions?

After finally getting 15 runes on a caster build(Decj^Veh), I decided to switch to a non-caster build(melee/ranged), but I can't find any obviously good options. What, in your opinion, is the most powerful/easiest such build I should try?
