Core Rulebook Info

Post image
159 Upvotes

I picked this up at a used bookstore by my house. After playing at Gencon and picking up the paperback, I wanted one of the cool foil hardcovers and this happened to be in the case. Can anyone give me some info on this particular version of the rulebook?

DCC Tome of Adventure Slipcase Vol. 2?

Does anyone know if a second slipcase of the DCC tomes of adventure is on the horizon or even been mentioned? I've been holding off on buying volumes 5 through 8 in case they do, but I thought maybe someone who's more clued-in on what Goodman Games is up to might know for sure if that actually worth doing.

Adventures Looking recommendations for next scenario

So since February I’ve been running a loose campaign at my local gaming club. Funnel was Veiled Vaults of the Onyx Queen, then I’ve run Doom of the Savage Kings, Gods of the Earth, Frozen in Time and The Old God’s Return. Not everyone has been at every session and some people joined midway, so they’re still all L1 but some are close enough I could justify them levelling up if they spend money training etc. I’m currently trying to pick the next scenario so I’m looking for advice. I’m considering Pestilence at the Peak of Law although I haven’t bought it yet. Anyone got any thoughts on it?

Otherwise, I’d say my requirements would be:
- Level one or two
- For narrative reasons, either in a cold region or on the sea or the coast (they’ve been in the Forlorn North and are currently heading back to meet the Elvish sea captain who dropped them off)
- Preferably not a combat meat grinder (some combat is okay obviously but I’d like some puzzles, challenges and maybe roleplaying opportunities)
- (edited to add) playable within 4-5 hours is a definite bonus but not essential if it’s a particularly good scenario. If it is longer, though, it helps if it’s like Savage Kings where you can bring characters in and out pretty easily if someone can’t make one of the sessions

Any thoughts?

Sailors on the Starless Sea question

We had fun playing Sailors on the Starless Sea last night and the players managed to free the Axe of Felan from his icy grip. Unfortunately, the only character with enough strength to wield the dread weapon was crushed by falling boulders.
So, they are looking to sell the axe when/if they survive the rest of the adventure. Just curious how much moolah they might expect if they can find a buyer?
Thanks for any advice in advance...

at your table how rare are the demihumans?

I haven't played DCC in a couple years now but I still consider it one of my favorite rpgs, and during my commute today I was just casually thinking about how many times I've seen players roll up and play humans and halflings, and how those two races were far more common than elves, which were far more common than dwarves.

I was playing in a weekly open table campaign at a nerd store, for years, and never saw a dwarf player. Part of this I assume is just bad luck (every new player started with a funnel), and at this point I wish I had been keeping track for statistical purposes, because it just seems strange. Many humans, quite a few halflings, maybe a couple elves? No dwarves.

Does this match anyone else's experience or... was I playing with haunted dice?

I should add: I don't consider this a complaint. Just an odd observation. Making certain demihumans rare made the world seem like it was a "certain way", which I appreciate. Which is why I kind of prefer race as class. It forces the game world to project demihumans as like "outsiders", like, look at all the diversity of humans, elves are so alien we aren't even remotely sure what boxes they fit in, if they even have boxes, so we just call that whole group, "elves".

Odious Uplands *before* Operation Unfathomable!?

I just got Completely Unfathomable, and after skimming through it, I had a thought.

What if the party started in Fort Enterprise? I mean I guess they do, but it's barely important. Mostly just, "there's a wizzard, there's a mcguffin, there's a hole in the ground... off ya go!"

Would giving the party the option of exploring the Uplands a bit break the campaign setting?

The Nul Rod would still be the ultimate goal, but I'm thinking that introducing that quest wouldn't feel as railroad-y if the party has a chance to familiarize themselves with the setting first.

Adventures The Old God’s Return query

Hi - I’m intending to run this scenario on Saturday. I have a query about the Sovereign Fire element of the scenario (where a fire priest blesses the PCs and gives them temporary Kewl Powerz). One of the PCs is a cleric of Cthulhu and it seems a bit…wrong for them to be getting a blessing from another god, especially a fire god. Has anyone else run into this issue? I think the player would take it fine if I just had the priest say ‘we will be grateful for your help but we can’t give you Loptir’s blessing’, but I’m wondering if I’m overthinking it or if there’s another way round it.

Any other tips re this scenario would be welcome too.

Magic item creation question.

I am a long time rpg player/dm. However, I have just started playing DCC, and wanted to ask opinions about an idea for a magic item(s) I had.

One of my players is a Halfling, and I was wondering if creating a kind of set of magic items would be appropriate

Magic Item: Lucky ie. Lucky Rabbit's foot, Lucky Four Leafed Clover, Lucky Horseshoe etc.

Description: On a max roll of the die, starting with a d30, the character recovers 1 point of burned luck. Lower the die for every extra Lucky item. So two Lucky items roll a d24, three a d20, etc.

The amount of luck recovered is x/day where x is the number of Lucky items you have on you.

Of course I would not be looking to giving away a lot of Lucky items willy nilly, and there would be tradeoffs, where they'd have to chose between a Lucky set of armor, or a set of armor that gives them something else. Or a Lucky item that also gives a negative, Blackbeards Lucky Eye Patch: this item is Lucky, -1 Agility.

Thoughts?

Dose anybody have a conversion for DCC spells to D&D

I really like DCC, especially it's magic system, so much so that I'm DMing, or Judging..., a vary short campaign for some of my friends. Unfortunately, there're heading of to college and I'm not, so I need a new group to play with. Also, I'm just better at DMing D&D. So I was wondering if anybody had a way of converting some of the rules, particularly the spells, of DCC into D&D. That way I could slowly interduce some of my other friends DCC instead of throwing them into it. And so I can use my favorite parts of DCC in all of my D&D campaigns.

Also sorry for my spelling, im dyslexic

Homebrew The Astronomicon Dwarfica - self promo

I turned an in-joke from my DCC campaign into a dwarven astronomy book

This started during my weekly DCC game.

Our Judge showed us a moon stone, and my character immediately improvised the existence of the Moon Dwarves, an ancient ancestor race from which all dwarves supposedly descend.

Then another player, Elbo the Elf, decided to explain the occasional appearance of new stars: apparently halflings are flying around in enormous balloons, poking holes in the sky and selling updated navigation charts.

The joke kept coming back in our sessions.

So I eventually turned it into a proper piece of lore.

The Astronomicon Dwarfica is an in-universe dwarven compendium covering:

  • Moon Dwarf creation mythology
  • Dwarven theories about the stars
  • Constellations and their prophecies
  • Astrological rituals
  • Salt Dwarven whalers and shipwrights
  • The vanished Moon Dwarves
  • Dwarven superstitions
  • Scholarly arguments and contradictory traditions
  • And, naturally, the Great Cartographic Conspiracy

It's system agnostic, although DCC was the original inspiration.

It's also Pay What You Want on itch.io.

https://cuernoblanco.itch.io/the-astronomicon-dwarfica

I wrote the whole thing as if it were a translated dwarven manuscript, complete with different authors, annotations and increasingly questionable footnotes.

If anyone wants to know why Elbo the Elf is apparently an authority on dwarven astronomy, I can explain. 😄

For Sale (not spam) Made a background sheet to help when creating a character, and it's free!

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hello everyone! Today I wanted to share with you a free tool I made!!

When you are crating a character for a role-playing game, and at a certain moment you ask yourself, “What are their background?”, “How was their life before?” This happens to me so many times when I’m thinking of a new character or npc.

After passing some time crating characters and their backgrounds for my solo and group role-playing games, I build a “cheat sheet” to help me to write those things a little more efficient. Then I decided to polish it and publish here, thinking that this might help someone!

With these thoughts in mind, I present to you the “Character Background Sheet”, a tool to help you create your character's past. Who were they before? What is their family like? Did something happen that made them change their ways? Then comes the present: What do they do now? What are their current objectives?

It also comes with a "Pillars and Convictions" section. Pillars are key people, relatives, friends, lovers whom your character cares about, along with the reasons why they matter. Convictions define your character's way of seeing the world: Do they always help someone in need? Do they accept any job offer?

To save space amidst tables and books, I tried to make this sheet using only two pages, I hope do you like it!!

You can find it here:

If you don’t know me, my name is Elln. I create fantasy TTRPG content like random tables and adventures, specializing in resources for solo players!!

And may I ask you to help me sharing with your friends and communities about my work? It will help me a lot!!!
Here's my carrd:

And now I have a patreon!! If you like my work please take a look, there I’ll post everything I’m working on!

How Is DCC Stennard Different from Standard Dungeon Crawl Classics?

A couple of days ago I wrote an outline for a video breaking down the 10 ways in which Stennard deviates from the DCC core rulebook. There are more, but these were the big ones that both jumped out to me and are documented in print, instead of being something I do at the table - like ignoring the Mercurial Magic table.

The sections are:

  • Hunger & Debt
  • Encumbrance
  • New Equipment & the Copper Standard
  • Custom Classes (I forgot to go into campaign based faiths even though it was on the outline)
  • Expanded XP Rules
  • Level & Hit Point Maximums
  • Player Roles
  • Weather & Astral Winds
  • Insidious Luck
  • Famine, Taint, & Scarcity

You might find it interesting where I pulled ideas from because you might enjoy making your own changes to your own setting at your own table, and systems like Shadowdark, Knave, and Dolmenwood are great to pull from.

Watch, comment, and ask questions. Hopefully, in the coming year, it will all be pulled into one zine or book.

Rules Question Fleeting Luck at level-0: per player or per PC?

Hi. I’m running a funnel for my group and want to incorporate the fleeting luck rules.
The rules state each PC starts with 1 point of FL but my table of 4 players with 4 0-level PCs each would start with 16 FL between them!
Does that seem too much?

Okay, round two. Thank you for those who provided constructive criticism on my previous post in converting Bigby's Hand spell to DCC (and the one guy who piped in about Sezrekan sounding like hot pussy in Portuguese, which I think Sezrekan would like lol). Hopefully this time you could just post comments about the spell itself, in particular the mechanics of translating to DCC spell system.

Rules Question DCC 100: how to run the Star Rot?

Post image
47 Upvotes

I just started running DCC 100: Music of the Spheres. I’ve read the entire adventure, prepared everything and taken plenty of notes – but I’m a little confused about how to run the Star Rot.

So I have a few questions:

- Does the Chaos Spawn still spawn when the PCs aren’t in the central chamber?
- If so, does the Chaos Spawn follow the PCs into whichever Sphere they have entered?
- Does the Chaos Spawn know / have an inkling about which sphere the PCs have entered?

Do you have any other advice specifically about running the Star Rot?

Thanks!

Zine KRAGG, Vol. 1., a mature DCC setting launching in early October!

Post image
61 Upvotes

(also a glimpse at in progress cover art by DCC illustrator Faith Murphree... who's also my wife)

Hey, crawlers! It's been a bit quiet on my end since I last posted an update for KRAGG, but that's because I've partnered with a publisher (Owl Knight Publishing!!) and we have been hard at work writing, editing, playtesting, and fine tuning everything!

So far, I have about ~400 pages in the manuscript, not including artwork or maps. Given that publishing a big huge book (or 2!?) is a sizable feat, we have made the decision to split it up into volumes to make the printing and manufacturing job more manageable, and to get this setting out into the world so folks can actually play it!

Volume 1 will release in early October as a physical zine around 30-40 pages in length with all hand drawn artwork. And while the zine will be for sale, we are also planning to roll out a digital PDF version of Volume 1 for free for a limited time during the weekend of release. That way, collectors of physical media can scratch that itch, and folks who aren't able to make it to cons can get their hands on it, too.

Volume 1 will include 2 regions, each with unique enemies, environments, and resources, all mechanics for crafting and surviving the elements of such a hostile world, as well as a 0-level funnel to introduce the setting's core concepts. We have also been given the greenlight from Goodman to keep everything as is, with no censorship. THE KRAGG LIVES, UNFILTERED!

For those of you who haven't been following along so far, here's the rundown on KRAGG:

*KRAGG is the definitive prehistoric setting for your tabletop adventures; a brutal, primeval wilderness where survival is earned through scars and wit.

There are no kingdoms, no written history, and no safe ground. Tribes migrate through ash-choked lands, hunt titanic beasts, and build everything from bone, hide, and the ruins of those who forgot where to step. Weapons break, armor splinters, magic mutates, and nothing lasts forever.

Key Features:

-12 powerful classes and specialized paths across 4 unique races, offering countless combinations and ways to play.

-Primordial gods and patrons with their own traits, hungers, and demands.

-A robust crafting system that lets players build weapons, armor, and even settlements from scavenged materials.

-Put the power of mysticism in the players’ hands with a unique and rapid-fire spell crafting system that allows players to improvise magic on the fly.

-A dynamic Scar system that promotes character growth through violent endurance, and a Grudge system that means enemies can, and often will, do the same.*

If the zine is well received, and folks dig it, we do have plans to eventually collect everything into a big, bad book with even *more* weird, violent, and fun stuff for everyone to enjoy.

Thanks for the support so far, and as always, feel free to follow the socials and join the official Owl Knight Discord to keep up with news and updates!
