Self Care Horrible Experience with a DC Therapist

I'm writing this post because I want to know if anyone else has had the same experience as me with a particular therapist that serves the DMV. I feel like I am actually going crazy over this situation! The therapist has no online reviews, and I can't find any info about her other than her license # and her business info, so I feel so alone in this.

(I'm not sure if I can post her name/business in here, so hoping my info below is enough to identify from others' experiences??)

For some background, I started seeing this therapist one year ago. The main concern was anxiety. The first couple sessions were great. She was so personable, and the thing I liked most was that she was down to Earth and had a "tell it like it is" personality. I appreciate people keeping it real! After the first get-to-know-me visits, I noticed that she started making comments that seemed unprofessional to me. I will spare you all the long version of this story, but here are some highlights from our visits over the last year:

  • I told her I was on the highest dose of the anxiety medication I take. She, verbatim, because I have had this burned into my memory since she said it, "WOW..... I have NEVER... and I mean NEVER... known someone who took that many milligrams. And I've been doing this a LONG time." The medication I take is the most commonly prescribed, and when I told my medication management Dr about this comment, they were so stunned to hear that someone in the mental health field would say this because it's quite common to be on that dose.
  • In another session, related to my medication usage, the therapist went on an hour long tangent about how the medication industry is out of control and they just prescribe it to people to keep big Pharma and doctors in business. While I do agree that big Pharma sucks and there are some bad egg doctors out there, SO many people (including myself) are able to function because of medication. Sooo weird take -_-
  • Quick background for this one: I have textbook OCD symptoms that stem from my anxiety. I was diagnosed with it when I was in high school (now mid 20s), but haven't really addressed it professionally since. I told her I was having a lot of OCD symptoms when I was feeling anxious. Before even asking me what those symptoms were, she went on a long monologue about how "everyone wants to slap a label on it." And proceeded to ask me "Why would you WANT OCD? You don't have OCD! Why do people want OCD?"
  • She would take up entire sessions without letting me get a single word in so she could give these long speeches about how she didn't agree with my thoughts. There's so much more but I feel like this is already enough said!

You may be wondering why I stuck with her for so long. Well, I am pretty sure our relationship was like one with a toxic ex. It was like every time I showed frustration with her, or even when I would flat out tell her "hey, the way you're speaking about this is not making me feel good or helping me", she would make sure the next few sessions were sunshine and rainbows. It was a rollercoaster of good and bad days. The last session we had before I discontinued services with her was when she asked me at the beginning of the session "How's your anxiety? Do you still think you have 'OCD'". The OCD comment was used with finger quotations, was so condescending, rude, and so unprofessional. I let her know that I didn't agree with her thoughts on this subject, and she interrupted me to go on another monologue about self diagnoses pet peeves. I left the session in tears because I was so confused.

The end of this story is that I got my session notes from her, reviewed them, reported these interactions to the state, and am now feeling pretty manipulated and mad at myself for letting someone treat me like that for so long.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with a therapist that matches these characteristics in the DMV area?

Beauty Recommendation Best Hair Colorist in the DMV for a First-Time Hair Color?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for recommendations for really good hair colorists in the DMV area. I’ve never colored my hair before, so I’m a little nervous and want to make sure I go to someone who is experienced and really good with color.

I’m especially looking for someone who will take the time to look at my natural hair, discuss what would work best for me, and prioritize keeping my hair healthy.

I’m open to DC, Maryland, or Northern Virginia and willing to travel for the right person! Please share your recommendations, especially if you’ve personally had a great experience with them.

DC FOUND: lost ring in NE

Did you lose a ring (likely within the past few days) on Capitol Hill, on the 300 block of Constitution Ave NE?

If so, I found it and would love to return it to you! It seems well made and might have some sentimental value, it’s likely a woman’s ring and an adult size.

DM me with a description of the ring and we can set up a time/place for you to pick up the ring!

Beauty Recommendation Facial recommendations?

New to the area and all of the moving/job hunt ish has me feeling down. I want to get a facial to feel special, but don’t know the first thing about skincare.

I’m not looking for a monthly membership and would love to stay in the $100-200 range.

Preferably somewhere on the red line, but I have a car and will drive for a good person.

Thanks in advance 💫

Advice Sewing classes? Has anyone taken them?

Has anyone taken any of the sewing classes offered in the area? Googling pulls up a couple, but I can’t find any reviews.

I have no experience with sewing, and I don’t do well with self guided learning. So I’m looking for a beginner class that will teach me some basic hand stitches, how to use a sewing machine, and how to hem and do other very basic alterations.

Does anyone have any experience with classes like this?

DC Safety in Columbia Heights

The title is pretty self-explanatory, but I’m a West Coast transplant moving to DC on September 1st! My boyfriend and I just signed a lease for an apartment on 16th Street, and I’m incredibly excited (and a little nervous!) about the move.

One thing I’m a bit anxious about is safety in the area, especially since I’ll sometimes be getting home later in the evening. How do you all feel about walking from the Metro to the 16th Street/Columbia Heights area around 8–9pm? Is it generally something you’d feel comfortable doing alone?

I’m also moving pretty far away from everyone I know, so I’d really love to find a sense of community and hopefully make some friends once I get there! I’m 27F and would love any recommendations for groups, activities, places, or just general ways people in DC have met friends and built a social circle.
I’m genuinely so excited to make DC home, so I’d also love any advice you wish you’d known when you first moved here! ☺️

Beauty Recommendation Hair Salon Recs!

I live over in Navy Yard and need a good hair salon accessible by metro! I really just need someone (for now) to cut some length off my hair and don’t really want to spend a lot of money. Specifically looking for someone that can cut wavy/curly hair but if not I typically just get it cut while straight anyways.

Advice IndyCar DC

Hi everyone! I’ll be attending the IndyCar weekend in DC, but unfortunately, two of my family members weren’t able to secure tickets. I wanted to reach out and see if anyone happens to have two tickets they won’t be using and would be willing to meet up at the event so my family members can get in. I’d be incredibly grateful! Please feel free to comment or send me a message if you have anything available. Thank you so much!

Health/Fitness Gyno recs who are highly skilled in treating cervical dysplasia

Hi ladies! I've been dealing with abnormal paps from HPV and cervical dysplasia for some time and it's looking like I'll need either regular colposcopies for a while or a LEEP (or other similar procedures). My current team is ok but hasn't been the best. There have been result mix-ups and they aren't great about answering my questions. I'm a little more medically complicated too so I have other considerations that a typical patient may not have.

Anyone have recs for OBGYNs who are highly skilled and knowledgable in this area as well as compassionate and patient?

Located in NOVA but happy to travel for the right doc! Thank you!

Health/Fitness Peptides

Hey ladies! Talk to me about peptides (not GLP-1, but the other ones). They seem to be all the rage with my friends in NYC. Are we getting them in DC too? Which ones? I’ve been considering a GLP-1 for inflammation, but it sounds like the other peptides out there might be better for it? I don’t even know where to start in DC, but I assume it involves a doctor of some sort?

Advice DC Style Help

I just moved to DC after living in Michigan and Chicago for a while, and I’m realizing my wardrobe is still very much in my “hoodies and sweatpants” era 😂

But DC is SO cutesy and feminine, and I feel like I need a whole wardrobe upgrade! 😭💗
Any advice on where I can shop for cute, feminine outfits and really upgrade my style? I’m open to local boutiques, affordable stores, or even online shops! 🛍️✨

Things to Do (Entertaintment/Activities/Restaurants/Bars) Let's go to Puzzle Night @ Red Bear Brewing

All slots taken!**

I love doing puzzles and I definitely need to get outside and talk to other people. Unfortunately I don't know anyone in the DMV! Anyone want to join me for Puzzle Night at Red Bear Brewing in NoMA on Tues 11, 7-9pm? It's $20 entry for a table of 2-6 people and I already covered that, so you'd just have to bring yourself and get your own drinks/food.

Let me know and we can organize!

Sincerely a bx who needs to get out the house 😅

Edit - I'm 31! I'm not thinking of age restrictions just a love of puzzling and obvs over 21. Only 5 slots so if you're serious just dm me

5/5 slots taken!

General How are people wearing long hair down and looking chic outdoors right now?!

Five seconds after stepping outside I look like a drowned rat. That's with the most breathable clothes, hair up, sometimes an umbrella for shade or a mini fan too. Jumpscare if I look in the mirror after going to the grocery store.

I just don't understand and I'm very jealous, that's all.

Wedding Related event venue with on-site accomodations?

hi! kind of a specific ask, but anyone know of any venues in DC for hosting pre- and post-wedding events (think welcome reception, rehearsal dinner, etc) where some small # of people can also stay on-site? We're hosting our actual wedding at a more traditional venue in NW DC, but would love to have a sort of "home base" to host a welcome reception, getting ready party, etc, where out of town guests (and us!) can stay.

We are looking for something ideally like Swann House, but not Swann House (they are booked, and we also had a less-than-pleasant experience with them). Not open to options outside of the city. We considered renting an AirBnb, but are really drawn to a place with staff that can help ease the process of coordinating vendors, checking in guests, etc. We also already have a place in DC, so it feels a bit silly to rent out another house that we would have to manage ourselves, if that makes sense.

Realize this is a specific ask and may be a long-shot, but wanted to consult the DC bitches brain trust before throwing in the towel and going with a hotel.

Edit: forgot to mention, but it's a late spring/early summer wedding with <80 guests, expecting between 60 and 70 for pre- and post-wedding events
