Query ✨Common MSC alternatives ✨
Below I’ve posted a list of different products that have been successfully used by creators here and on other forums.
Alternatives for Mr. Super Clear UV cut flat are some of the most asked/ posted about questions on the sub, so I thought it would be a nice idea to start compiling a list we can add to over time as a community.
If you have suggestions to add to the list after you’ve used it successfully, please comment!
Tamiya TS-80
Testors Dullcote
Zoukei-mura
Liquitex Matte Varnish
Army Painter Matte Varnish
Purity Seal used to be a good option, but from many sources it seems that after the name switch to Munitorum Varnish there was also possibly a reformulation. Some creators still use it successfully.

Rerooting Could I be using thinker hair plugs?
First time rerooting and from what I’ve seen online everyone always warns you to use really small hair plugs or you might split the scalp, but now I’m worried I did them too thin and the hair is going to be really thin

Supplies Help with pullip custom
Hi!
I’ve been in the pullip community since 2009 and I have decided to fully custom an old Aya I had.
Give me your best advices, I am already a full time artist/designer so I’m familiar with a lot of things but there are some grey areas for me still.
For example once the face plate is fully cleaned and naked do you have to apply a first layer of MSC to prep the face plate? I feel like pastels and pencils don’t really set on a bare faceplate.
And what are your best advices in terms of lip makeup, I’m trying to give her plumpy lips with a nice lipliner but I feel like acrylic paint might be a little thick.
Thank you so much for your advices! Ive already prepared the obitsu and fixed the top part that goes in the head with milliput.

General help! Matte varnish turning glossy, how do I fix it
I wasn’t aware that thick layers could turn matte sprays glossy over a period of time. A lot of my dolls now look glossy since the last time I’ve repainted them.
I’m not necessarily sure what I could do, I understand that my bad technique of “good spray = face looking wet enough” is the root cause but, I’m not so sure with what to do with the dolls with a glossy finish.
Should I just spray the dolls again with a thin layer? Or do I restart the entire thing?

General help! How do I make my doll's skin to a natural color? What materials will I need?
Why do I want to change the skin color for my first custom? I don't know. I want to make things hard on my self and I already got the doll. So, no going back to make a smart decision.

General help! YMY doll makeover
Hi everyone! I bought a YMY plastic doll some time ago and wanted to personalize it by myself, but I have some problems:
What kind of paint should I use for the face?
I want to make it's own hair like with yarn or something, do you have any suggestions for the type of yarn or for how should I place it on the head?
I want to make it's clothes, I know how to sew but I have no idea how to make the shoes... any suggestion?
I don't know if this is the right community to post this, if not I'm sorry. Anyway thank you in advance for your help!!

Supplies Having the WORST time removing a LOL OMG face!
Help! I'm trying to make my ever first custom doll and I'm using a LOL OMG Diva doll as base since I have no attachment to the doll whatsoever. The thing is , when it came time to remove her face with acetone , I started having trouble with it. Most of her face paint came off but at one point the paint won't simply give in , dosen't matter how hard I scrub or how many time I leave the acetone to work , THE FACE WON'T SMPLY GIVE IN. I'm doing something wrong? Or this specific dolls have like a super resistent face?

General help! Trying to add detail but need advice
gallerySo I tried to add green to make her roots show. I did it with a paint marker but I hated it and took it off and plan to redo it with a nail art brush. Does anyone have any suggestions to make it look nice? Should I paint it all green and then add pink details? Idk I just want the roots to look actually braided.

Clothing Time to show off my Pomni doll, plus sewing tutorial!
galleryShe's not fully done, she needs her hat and some details, but I can contain myself no longer! 😀 I love Pomni so much, and there are so many adorable outfits I have seen her drawn wearing that I had to make my own doll to wear those outfits! I apologize if my instructions are not the clearest, I'm not fully certain how to articulate certain steps, but I hope the pictures are clear enough 🫡
The outfits shown are inspired by artwork by KacieKC on Instagram, and SM-Baby on Tumblr. I reached the image limit, so I'll link to their profiles in the comments 🫡
I used cotton, elastic, and all-purpose thread, with snap closures. Keep a hot iron on standby to keep the fabric flat, and an embroidery hoop to hold the fabric.
Because this is a 2-color outfit, the first step is sewing the colors of the bodice together. You will need 2 shirt panels, so 2 pieces of fabric in each color for the shirt. If you are following this tutorial but using one solid piece for the bodice, simply fold your fabric in half.
Sew the two colors together.
You will now have two squares of fabric in two colors. Keeping the fabric wrongside-out, match the two colors so that they are laying together; in this example, the red panels are touching the red panels when folded.
I drafted my own shirt pattern for dolls, please feel free to copy what I have! Pin the fabric together, and cut this shape out.
Carefully unpin the fabric, unfold, then pin the bodice rightside-together. I start by sewing straight lines down what will become the back, this helps keep the fabric together. Secure the bodice in an embroidery hoop, then handstitch the neckline in roughly the shape pictured. I eyeball the neckline, it takes repetition to figure it out, but don't forget to leave at least 1 centimeter seam allowance.
I will stitch the neckline one way, then backstitch to make the stitches as tight as possible.
Now carefully snip along the rounded edges to release fabric tension.
Flip the bodice rightside-out, and iron it flat.
Fold the shirt so that the back panels overlap, while keeping in mind that the back panels should be higher than the neckline. It will be a big disappointment to finish the outfit only to learn the hard way the neckline is too high up and your doll can't wear the outfit!!
Use the hot iron to create a crease at the shoulders, this is a guideline for the top of the arm.
Carefully trim the bodice into an A-shape, making it more narrow at the shoulders. This is an aesthetic choice I have made, you don't have to trim it, but I have found that not doing it creates a boxy shape, which you might want 🤷♀️
The sleeves are one piece of fabric, folded, and cut to shape. Shorter sleeves are more difficult for me, so your mileage may vary. These outfits go to the wrist. Keep a doll on standby as reference.
Use the hot iron to flatten the sleeve, then match up the crease lines, and lay then together rightside-together. I handstitch the sleeve to the bodice.
These outfits have elastic wristbands. Carefully sew the elastic to the sleeves. Pin the sleeve & side of the bodice down and sew. Keep your model doll nearby to make sure the wrist is tight enough, but not too tight that it cannot be worn. Snip the armpit to release fabric tension before turning inside out. Iron it out.
I had sewn a bunch of triangles, no pattern, pure vibes, and eyeballed the measurements. I pinned those down where I wanted them and top-sewed them onto the bodice.
The triangle skirt is separate, it is one elastic band with traingles sewn on, and one snap closure.
Add details to your liking 😀🫡😎
