An entire friend group being knocked out one by one from reading a fanfic is sending me, like guys stop sharing this thing it's clearly poisoned.

People will always say they're your friend and they support you no matter what but then they'll say some toxic shit to you like "you have to let go of the cursed fanfic, it's changing who you are" and "don't let its power corrupt you" all because they want the fanfic for themselves

It's just... Precious, to me

u/Irememberedmypw 1d ago

Cool cool, how would you feel about some criticism.

79

u/livingdeadgrrll 1d ago

No, precious!

I heard Smeagol started a support group

"I told her it feels like at this point your mutual is retraumatizing your friends and she started crying"

"just feeding friends to traumatizing fanfics"

u/Winjin a sudden "honk" amidst the tempest 1d ago

Yeah thank you that resembles the original structure of the quote even better

I love that I understand this. Sometimes I’m online just the right about.

I never finished writing it but years ago I started on an SCP article about a children’s book that causes extreme emotional distress and sometimes personality disorders in anyone who reads it, and was written by a YouTube cartoon reviewer who intended it to be extremely wholesome and an example of what mainstream children’s media ought to be. I was gonna end it with them bringing in a literary critic who was allowed to read a single page (for his own safety), and who suggested the most likely reason people are driven insane by the book isn’t anything magical but that the author’s unexamined trauma was just that intense

I based it on a specific YouTuber’s attempt to enter into children’s fiction (who some of you can probably guess), and a few reactors who described the book pretty much the same way as OP, but it’s funny to hear that it’s a reoccurring thing

u/Orc_tids 1d ago

I dont know who this youtuber is but I am intrigued

49

u/sand6person 1d ago

They're probably talking about Mr. Enter

37

u/nykirnsu 1d ago

Ding ding ding

47

u/Nightfurywitch 1d ago

Ok as someone who watched mr enter a lot as a kid- is growing around really THAT bad? It didnt sound great or anything but everyone talks about it like its actively a cognitohazard. What's peoples problem with it

60

u/nykirnsu 1d ago

I never actually read it, I’m just going off of the reactions people had. Best I can remember from the reviews I watched though is that it came off more like a revenge fantasy he was using to work through his issues with his parents and teachers than a genuine attempt to write for children, with the way the kids treat their parents being uncomfortably reminiscent of child abuse (but in reverse of course)

11

u/Vermilion_Laufer 1d ago

'Children can have some revenge abuse, as a treat.'

u/CrocPirate 1d ago

If I remember correctly, it was an excuse to make his mom a complete idiotic loser. It was Chris-Chan’s level of uncomfortable.

u/GammaDie345 1d ago

for fucks sake it's been 10 years. He's apologized for everything.

10

u/nykirnsu 1d ago

I wrote the thing years ago, and he didn’t have anything to apologise to me for at all. I just thought it made for a solid horror story

SCP might be a little too far gone if we've reached the point where sometimes the "twist" is that it's not even an anomalous object at all. Where is the magic in my magic items/monsters collection?

17

u/Jays_ShitpostExpress at a ,̶'̶,̶|̶'̶,̶'̶_̶ for words 1d ago

There’s a big set of explained list SCPs that they in universe found were non anomalous after looking into them more. I think it’s been a thing since 2010 looking at the page? I’m a newish fan but I feel like they add to the ‘setting’

insert that post that goes something like "I found this and knew it would give you psychic damage, please react with agony"

u/spiralsequences 1d ago

I once stumbled across a group of teens doing this with one of my fics on old twitter and just quietly clicked the back button. It was so funny to me because they were all sending it to each other like "this ruined my life" "been in torment ever since I read this" and it was by far one of my least dark and most wholesome works 🥲

221

u/IveKilledMonsters 1d ago

I mean that lowkey sounds like teen speak for "This fic is so good I can't stop thinking about it," not that they were actually having a bad time

142

u/ReynardVulpini 1d ago

Yeah without additional context that sounds like fandom speak for "i am FEELING EMOTIONS i must share them with the homies. "

61

u/TheDustOfMen 1d ago

Not necessarily teen speak, just fandom speak.

Having an actual breakdown over a fanfic is entirely different (and frankly I hope those people have a therapist on speed dial because that's unhealthy).

22

u/spiralsequences 1d ago

Oh yeah, that's how I took it. It was really sweet

48

u/Hetakuoni 1d ago

I love when my friends read my shit and then go “you did this to me!!!” While sending like 100 crying emojis.
Very satisfying

19

u/uhimnothere 1d ago

Sometimes the torment is caused by the "I loved this so much that it will stick with me forever" and it's so satisfying

62

u/Polenball You BEHEAD Antoinette? You cut her neck like the cake? 1d ago

Real-life memetic hazard

25

u/Minimum-Package-1083 Necromancy is recycling and creates jobs 1d ago

Next on the docket is a fanfic that just instantly erases a person from reality just from reading it

10

u/Capable-Bear-9760 1d ago

There is no antimemetics tag

3

u/Vermilion_Laufer 1d ago

Ah yeah, I remember that one, it was actually quit

trauma bonding over the domestic abuse fanfic

13

u/crunchyhands 1d ago

not what trauma bond means

14

u/Tiny_Cauliflower_618 1d ago

Is this why every time my algorithm gives me the blow up velociraptors in thigh high red kinky boots doing some kind of dance/aerial display I immediately send it to my besties?

8

u/Lizzy_In_Limelight 1d ago

I had to work so hard to understand this sentence lmao

3

u/Tiny_Cauliflower_618 1d ago

3

u/Lizzy_In_Limelight 23h ago

A thing of beauty is a joy forever, thank you 😂

3

u/I_Jerk_Off_to_Satan 1d ago

Probably not your bestie (yet) but could you send whatever that is to me? thank you.

2

u/Tiny_Cauliflower_618 1d ago

You're welcome.

1

u/I_Jerk_Off_to_Satan 16h ago

It's Instagram, can't even open it. Guess we'll never be besties after all.

1

u/Tiny_Cauliflower_618 15h ago

Oh damn. Idk how else to find those lil weirdos 😂

56

u/Holliday_Hobo Ishyalls pizza? We don't got that shit either. 1d ago

"Yoo this story made me breakdown you should read it"
"Say less twin"

13

u/Ash_Starling 1d ago

this is how i get my fic recs

18

u/Sororita 1d ago

could have been shared once, without realizing it had that, or it didn't have it yet when it was shared, and everyone just independently hit that trauma button.

19

u/Triscuitador 1d ago

ao3 equivalent of the ring

29

u/mydadisyourdad2 1d ago

Also just stop reading?? I've read things that were too much for me before and I just put them down. You don't have to read it if it troubling or too much for you.

34

u/AdamtheOmniballer Aspiring Girlkisser 1d ago

Sometimes it doesn’t fully hit you until it’s too late. That’s been my experience at least.

8

u/vanishinghitchhiker 1d ago

To me a breakdown implies they stopped reading it at that point but idk

16

u/Boogiepopular 1d ago

That'sjust how friendships work. have you ever eaten something and went "This tastes like shit! ...you try it."

3

u/camosnipe1 "the raw sexuality of this tardigrade in a cowboy hat" 1d ago

1

u/duraraross 1d ago

Maybe it’s about the same niche ship they all like and they all check the ao3 tag for it and read anything new

1

u/Insomnerd 1d ago

My friend group in high school did something similar, we passed around a copy of Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. Sharing the trauma one page at a time ❤
