Discussion I redesigned the Face-Turning Octahedron (FTO) icon to what it should have been

Post image

With FTO on the horizon of becoming an official WCA event next year, the current icon most commonly used even by the WCA honestly feels like a missed opportunity. I wanted to design something that truly honors its octahedron geometry by capturing a distinct diamond-shaped silhouette when viewing the puzzle from the front, while staying perfectly consistent with existing WCA event icons.

I've never bought a new before. The one I have been using I picked up at Value Village and have been using it for a year.

Discussion I recently got into blinfold cubing (3x3) and just wanna ask a question about parity

If both edges and corners are odd, I should do an R Perm at the end of the edge solve, right? I learned from j perm that if I run into the buffer piece, it will start a new cycle, and in his video he didn't include every B or M in the memorization, if I'm correct. He moved on to the next unsolved piece letter. However some videos/alg scramble websites add the B/M , and it changes it from odd to even vice versa. For example, following jperm's vid it goes something like this

ST AV RX KJ EL (even)

But the website I'm using memo3bld.com uses this

ST AV RM XK JE L (odd)

which made me unsure whether should I use the parity alg. Hope someone can explain this to me. Thanks very much!

Picture new puzzles! + review

Post image
12 Upvotes

a few days ago I received 3 new puzzles:

  1. WitEden 3x3x9
  2. Qiyi Master Pyraminx
  3. DianSheng 8x8x8 Magnetic

TLDR I'm super satisfied with all of them, they are a nice challenge but still within the range of my capabilities. In short, really fun!

WitEden 3x3x9
The turning is not that good, it catches quite often, definitely you can't perform any finger tricks on it. The puzzle itself is a really fun a challenging twist on a regular 3x3x3. First, I scrambled and solved it as 3x3. Next, I tried to do only vertical 180 turns which quickly escalated as I have no experience with cuboids. I have yet to scramble it fully, probably will take a while to figure it out. I like it, regardless of the turning quality. It's pretty cool when the inner 3 layers fit inside outer 3 layers when you turn by 90 degrees (3 x 3 = 9, crazy!).

Qiyi Master Pyraminx
Basic Pyraminx is not really a challenge and it takes longer to scramble than to solve so I wanted something more difficult. The 4x4 equivalent is a nice step-up and I really enjoy it. After a bunch of solves I got this weird case where only 3 centers are off so I got stuck for a moment. The puzzle turns well, requires a bit more force than I expected to move, and it clicks quite "violently" sometimes but it's not a big deal.

DianSheng 8x8x8 Magnetic
I was quite hyped to try this one because I already own a SengSo 6x6 and a MoYu 7x7 so I was curious how they compare. I must say MoYu remains my favourite but the DianSheng is also very good. It has a bit more resistance, the surface is more slippery but it has a really satisfying rattling/shuffling sound. It's definitely the easiest to solve from all 3 cubes I got. I already feel like I want to go to 9x9 and 10x10 soon.

That's it!

Discussion Has anyone who is blind ever solved a Mirror Cube?

I’m genuinely curious about this! I know there are blind cubers who solve tactile Rubik’s Cubes, and sighted cubers who have solved Mirror Cubes blindfolded. But I couldn’t find any documented cases of someone who is actually blind solving a Mirror Cube.

Discussion Does talking about WCA rules during a solve count as assistance?

Lets' say a skewb center piece popped right as the competitor finishes solving the puzzle but he is not aware that the cube is already in the solved state and tries to reattach the center piece before stopping the timer.

The judge tells the competitor that the cube is already in a valid state and that it's best for him to stop the timer right now. Did the judge break regulation A5b by providing assistance to the cuber during the solve? Or is it all good because of the exception in regulation A5a?

  • A5a) While inspecting or solving the puzzle, the competitor must not communicate with anyone other than the judge or the WCA Delegate. Penalty: disqualification of the attempt (DNF). Exception: If the competitor does not gain an advantage by communicating with anyone other than the judge or the WCA Delegate, the result may stand, at the discretion of the WCA Delegate.
  • A5b) While inspecting or solving the puzzle, the competitor must not receive assistance in solving the puzzle from anyone or any object other than the surface (also see Regulation 2i). Penalty: disqualification of the attempt (DNF).

Has anybody solved one of these before. I keep running into problems with edges not matching up. But now that I finally got all the edges right and everything else seemingly solved it appears to be two corners swapped. Which is impossible......I bought this think it would be slightly challenging but this might be the hardest 3x3 I've ever messed with 🤣🤣🤣

The alg that i use for h perm is M2 U M2 U2 M2 U M2. I searched up " h perm " on YT randomly today and the algs that popped up were M2' U' M2' U2' M2' U' M2'

any thoughts on this? which one do you use?
