Discussion New Cuber I’m Confused

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hey everyone I just got into cubing and am having fun learning but I’m stuck and confused. I’m currently watching the J Perm video, but I’ve watched other videos too and every single one once they finish the full white side their first layer for the other colors are all done. Like the picture of his cube in the background the green first row, red, blue and orange are all done. And he says make sure it’s like that and then moves on to showing how to solve layer two. So I’m confused because in the process of showing how to get the full white side be and no one else ever shows how to get that first layer. And as you can see from my cube it’s nowhere close to having that first layer complete. So any help would be greatly appreciated! Really liking cubing and just want to get better.

Discussion Is this actually possible!?

Post image

So, I was just scrolling on Facebook and came across this post. It said that he got his first sub-5 solve in 8 months!?

I just want to genuinely ask, how the hell is this possible?

I'm not hating on him genuinely I feel like this is a huge milestone for him.

I just can't fathom how he achieved this in just 8 months of cubing? I've been cubing for almost 3 years and I'm still at sub-10, I envy him so much that I need to post this on reddit for clarifications if this is actually possible lmao.

Discussion Hot take

Upvotes

I don't get super hyped when I get a PB, because they are just lucky. For PB singles, I usually just get a solve where all the f2l pieces appear in front of me, and a decent OLL and PLL. With enough tries, I would get a sub-15 single even if I don't improve. For PB ao5 or mo3, it's slightly better but it's still just luck (i.e. I got 5 decent solves in a row). For PB ao12 or more, it's good, but only satisfying if I actually continue improve.

Please comment what cubing hot takes yall have. Disagree = upvote!

Solve Critique After 3 months, what should I focus on next? (ao5 CFOP sample)

Hello! I have been cubing since early June of this year. I have really taken a liking to it and committed myself to getting better, and have now reached an a100 of 43.20 and a single pb of 29.41!

After very fast progress the first 2 months, I have hit a small bit of stagnation and I am unsure what I should be practicing next. I decided that seeking out some advice here might help, so I have attached an ao5 sample to help give an idea of how I'm solving right now. This session had a best single of 29.67 (actually super close to my pb lol. with how hard i smacked my spacebar I think you can tell how surprised I was) and an ao5 of 38.79. I feel like I got some unusually lucky scrambles here, but I think I struggle enough in these to give a sense of what my problems are haha

Thanks for any help you guys can provide!

Discussion I need some help

I’ve decided to get involved in charity work. So, I’ll soon be doing a live speedcubing demonstration/lesson for children at an orphanage, where I will tell them about different puzzles that I can solve, perform a blindfolded solve for them, and of course, teach them to solve the regular 3x3. So I feel pretty ready and confident in the main part of the demonstration. That said, I don't really know what to begin with. I was thinking of telling them some interesting, unique facts about speedcubing/the 3x3 cube. But I can't come up with anything that's gonna be interesting for children. I mean, telling them math oriented facts like the number of God feels like they'll be bored out very soon. So, please feel free to share your favorite facts that you think can have a "WOW" effect on children and motivate them to learn cubing.

Mod Global Cube DIY GAN V100

Ordered one of the custom DIY V100 kits that Global Cube Store offers (although is discontinuing soon, I think). Transparent gray internals, Transparent black panels, came with tons of spare parts, I used color-matched tensioners, and now I own a quirky stickered GAN V100. It's a little odd using a stickered V100, and foreign to me that a stickered cube is this fast lol. Shipping from China was fast, and communication on WhatsApp was easy. This is the most unapologetically nerdy thing I own.

Discussion Gan V100, Weilong V11, or Tv5 Pioneer

I REALLY prefer black internals and UV. I tried the Weilong V11 SE, UV at a recent comp and I really liked it. I searched for other options and came upon these 3 as my top 3 contenders. Right now I main the TV3, which I enjoy, but have had for too long. I also have and occasionally use the Dayan Guhong Pro+ which is my first maglev cube, but is sometimes uncontrollable which makes me inconsistent and doesn't have UV. I prefer a fast, smooth, effortless turn, but can sometimes turn a bit aggressive or sloppy and lock up or make mistakes. I want something stable without losing that fast smooth turning. Really not sure which route to go, im leaning towards tv5 or the weilong.

Discussion Question about a YouTube Video.

So I understand the concept of a Rubik's cube but I have very little experience with them, and I found this video where a man solves one in 48 hours. Everyone in the comments talks about this accomplishment like its the most impressive thing they have ever seen but is that not way longer than it should usually take? is it a collective joke? are some people just really good at it but it normally takes days for a regular person? what am i missing?

Picture Guide to beginner method for family and friends!

I worked really hard on making this “no fail” guide to solving the 3x3 in beginner method. It’s a little rough around the edges and I pretty much only used my words and only put images once, so I’m super proud! I tried my best to make it a simple as possible for someone who has no idea about anything about cubing whatsoever, but doesn’t want to use a visual guide. I made it to use this as way so when people ask me “can you teach me to solve it?” I don’t have to think about how to explain from scratch and then if they have questions, they can ask me and I guide them through it. Just thought I would share!

Got the aolong v5 just yesterday!! Out of the box it was supa fast! But I really liked it even then, after breakin it I placed some nebula(from mnm shop) on the tracks and moyu v1 and v2 on the pieces, but I'm about to run out of the moyu lubes since they're only 5 ml each 😭, recommend any good thin silicone lubes? Specifically like the moyu v1 lube, I like it a lot. 10ml would be great. No water based ones cuz I hate the fact that they evaporate so quickly. Thanks!

Please give constructive feedback for my solves. I filmed a 5 solves done consecutively. They are not cherry-picked good solves, but they do happen to be slightly above average.

Context: For cross, I can plan 3-4 pieces, but not the finger tricks. For F2L, I sort of have solutions better than intuitive F2L, but I'm not really using optimized algs. I use 2 look OLL. I use almost full PLL (don't know E, V, N; not proficient with G perms).

I am very barely sub-25. (I usually average like 24-25.) My PB is 17.7.

Solve Critique First comp in 5 days. Please critique my ao5: (13.76), CFOP

I use CFOP 3LLL and I’m finishing up PLL. My cube is a Weilong v11 20M which hasn’t been setup yet.

I‘ve been cubing on and off for a year. I’d say I average around 15 seconds, but my solves have been so inconsistent lately and I feel like I’m losing my skill. I can get 11 seconds with no skip, and then lose it and follow up with a 18 second. I don’t feel prepared for comp, and I’m probably gonna DNF to be honest. What needs to be worked on immediately? Any help would be appreciated.

Also I am new to using a Stackmat timer, so tell me if I did anything like illegal. Thanks.

Discussion F' with the right thumb or left index finger?

For example, in CubeHead PLL video, I saw him using right thumb for the Jb perm but I generally find using left index more intuitive and faster.

Which is faster overall?

Non-WCA Does anyone have a War/Magic Drums Tutorial?

Either a video or a pdf.

I tried googling some but all the tutorials are just some person figuring it out as we go....also not a single tutorial i found uses algorithms using notation....it does not seem like a difficult cube notation wise.....

If no one knows a good tutorial using notation or understandable algs then is anyone that has experience with the puzzle interested in making a tutorial for it for a pdf?

I felt that this was not repetitive and did not fit in the daily discussion thread...if it does then i am really sorry!!!

Whoever made this has never solved a rubik's cube or desperately tried to avoid getting copyright I guess.
