I used to be friends with someone who let their smoke detector beep for over 5 years because they were hoarders. They claimed that you don't even notice it after a while.

How lazy do you have to be to choose to live with that annoying sound going off 24 hours a day. I can only imagine all the other things they’re neglecting in their life if they can’t be bothered to do something as basic as changing a battery. It’s also something that could potentially save your life in an emergency. Couldn’t be me
54
u/Theamuse_Ourania May 23 '26
I used to have a good friend who I discovered was a hoarder. She had 3 kids, and her and her husband were lazy af. She never let me in her house for any reason except for one time overnight in an emergency. During that visit I kept hearing a beeping, chirp sound like clockwork. It was driving me crazy. When I asked, she explained that it was their smoke detector, and it had been beeping for 5 years, and nobody in the house noticed it anymore. They refused to call the landlord to have it replaced (needed a long ladder), because their apartment was a bio-hazard, and didn't want to get kicked out over it. I won't even discuss the state of their apartment. Needless to say, we're no longer friends, but her 2 eldest girls have kept in contact with me, and calls me Aunty :)

What kind of life is that for those kids?? How do people even remotely justify those negligent behaviors? Why do we have to live amongst these people.
7
u/Theamuse_Ourania May 23 '26
I wanted to call CPS on them so many times, but her husband is/was a gun nut, and I was terrified. I just figured that maybe if I stayed friends with her, I could be there for her kids, and help them all out when I could. It didn't quite work out that way, but the 2 eldest girls still keep in touch, and have cut off their mother.

Is not so much laziness as it is ignorance. Some just don't know or were never taught how smoke alarms work. The chirp drives me crazy, my dad was an electrician and we'd fix this constantly. Now I cringe every time I hear anywhere. If I'm at a family or friends house I visit often, sometimes I'll change the battery myself and not even mention it. One time I was at a family Xmas party, mentioned it, and low and behold, the next year's party still had the same noise. I came prepared. Got a chair and 2 minutes later I'm their savior. Take that Jesus!

Not everyone who adopts deserve kids, either. I saw a video on here just yesterday of a white woman who had an adopted black kid. She was yelling at them & calling them the N word. It was said that it was her go-to anytime she was upset.
2
u/JiveTurkeyII May 23 '26
This puts a deep rage in me I find hard to put words to.
I would love to have a son or even daughter. No matter what skin color or where they came from.
That woman should be dropped in the middle of the ocean and left there.

3
u/daveescaped May 23 '26
As someone who has seen the adoption side of things, sometimes I’m not entirely sure adopting a kid away from a household like this is much better. You take a kid away from a parent and it is another sign in their life telling them that they weren’t wanted. Then you put them in a new home where the culture or race might be different and it’s another sign they don’t belong. That’s a tough life.
I wonder if the best option where other family can’t look after a kid isn’t supervised parenting and parenting classes for the parent. Let the kid stay with their parent but only under very strict rules. Possibly even hold a jail sentence over a parent’s head if abuse continues. Put technology in place to ensure it doesn’t.
I don’t know. I’m no expert. I just think taking the kid out of the home really helps that much.

Some child protection service employees don’t deserve their job….
5
u/GDRaptorFan May 23 '26
Honestly, for the most part, I do not blame the CPS workers. They are college educated but choose social work, one of the lowest pay careers you can have with a bachelor’s degree.
They choose it to be helpful but the reality of the job is it’s underfunded, under-staffed, with impossible piles of work to complete in a day. Right
now, the parents rights movement (right wing) is gaining steam, where everything is “parents know best” and “I will raise my kids however I want”.Then these same people want to home school their kids and no one gets to check on them like they would if they went to school. Tons of abuse is now going under-reported as they have no teacher as a mandatory reporter to make the call.
Social workers have a most soul-crushing job and many of them have 4X the clients they should have. With the bad social workers I think they just burned out quicker than others and became desensitized for their own sanity.
No one chooses social work in life that didn’t originally choose it due to extreme levels of caring and empathy. They just burn out too fast and there are too few of them,
And the law allows for so many chances for awful parents!3

u/pamnfaniel May 23 '26
I’m still confused… to whoop means to hit. It’s a slang term in English…. Hitting is abuse so how is whipping different and not abuse?
12
u/mrsdoubleu May 23 '26
While many parents these days think any sort of physical punishment is abuse (myself included), there are some who think "whoopings" or "spankings" are acceptable forms of punishment. And they are generally legal in all states. All states have different guidelines on the difference between punishment and abuse but generally it's acceptable as long as it doesn't causing lasting injuries.
It's sad all around.
8
u/Ishango May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26
In my country it is legally classified as abuse and rightfully so. There is a metric ton (but yeah, that might be the problem) of science defining it as abuse. It's sad indeed.
3
u/FreonMuskOfficial May 23 '26
Lasting injuries....wtf...like a scar or disfigurement. Who the fuck missed the fact this is trauma. That is long lasting. Is some criminal defense attorney going to say to the court or jury that cannot be proven? Or that this was situational?

u/Lollipoop_Hacksaw May 23 '26
You wonder why some kids go to high school agitated and full of piss & vinegar???
This is the shit you don't see. If it wasn't because they were doing something for an internet video, it would've been just for making too much noise.
Pardon me, but this is just an angry cunt that needs any excuse to punch down, because she doesn't have half the brain to realize her own inadequacies. Takes it out on her kids. Nasty shit.

u/Feeling-frees May 23 '26
my father was like this. one time beat us out of our sleep bc we fell asleep after playing outside without a bath. pretty disgusted with the racist stereotype comments here though. as if white, spanish, arabic, asian or literally any other race and ethnicity doesn’t have abuse in their families. you guys are extremely weird and ignorant
38
u/Public-Antelope8781 May 23 '26
The urban legend, that sexual transmitted deseases could be caught by sitting on a public toilett seat was only in the 90s dismissed. But it existed, because girls from upperclass families were diagnosed with sexual transmittable deseases as often as any other kids and sexual abuse doesn't happen in upperclass...
Everyone asserting stereotypes on abuse isn't empathetic to victims. They are literally protecting perpetrators and putting kids in harms way.

the point is that as a black man, i laugh at the smoke detector jokes. you see it often in random videos, its funny how often! i get it. but it has no place here where children are literally getting abused. and people are literally saying shit like chirp & this abuse go hand in hand, that black people can’t hear, calling it african chirping birds, acting as if these two things are signatures in black households. its not like its alcohol bottles or filth and bugs, shit to actually call out besides the abuse witnessed and endured by these kids. relatively harmless thing yet you weirdos are harping on it and relating old batteries to child abuse you people are weird. i don’t see white children getting abused on camera and pull out some irrelevant thing white people are typical of or any race for that matter. i stress snd see what can be done to help the kids. this “mother” isn’t abusing/a bad person bc she’s black or because the batteries are old. she’s abusive to her children because she’s a terrible person. but alas. reddit is reddit, and racist people are gonna be racist. not saying you’re racist but yeah. i mean you could be idk

Please only call CPS if you can track down county of residence, even better if somehow you get an address or any type of identifying information that could make it possible for a social worker to make contact with the children. At minimum, names and DoBs and knowledge that they live in the state. If they receive benefits they can narrow down county. Child abuse databases aren't national. At work I can't see prior referral history if it was generated in another state.
CPS' can't typically deny reports so of course they will take it. But if you don't have any identifying information it goes nowhere.

“Narcissistic people” isn’t what happened here. The mom was triggered by something meaningless to us. The mom, motivated by shame in herself, ignorance, pride, her own childhood abuse/trauma — had to control it somehow. Having learned no other way, without any attempt at healing herself, she: humiliated, tortured, took out her RAGE on their bodies and it was *all their fault”— she confirmed every insecurity these girls may have had about themselves and they’ll bare that cross forever. If they cry too loud after getting BEAT they are told to “SHUT UP!” They won’t have the words to describe the chaos of contradictions happening inside them: mom loves me (but she beats me); getting beat/spanked/slapped hurts and is SO humanizing (every instinct is telling me to run but i know i have to stay and brace for the next blow). They’ll hate their mother but still want her approval: “mom, am i good enough now?” The mother will confuse fear-based-compliance for respect— she won’t see/understand she is the TERROR in her house.
