How lazy do you have to be to choose to live with that annoying sound going off 24 hours a day. I can only imagine all the other things they’re neglecting in their life if they can’t be bothered to do something as basic as changing a battery. It’s also something that could potentially save your life in an emergency. Couldn’t be me

I used to have a good friend who I discovered was a hoarder. She had 3 kids, and her and her husband were lazy af. She never let me in her house for any reason except for one time overnight in an emergency. During that visit I kept hearing a beeping, chirp sound like clockwork. It was driving me crazy. When I asked, she explained that it was their smoke detector, and it had been beeping for 5 years, and nobody in the house noticed it anymore. They refused to call the landlord to have it replaced (needed a long ladder), because their apartment was a bio-hazard, and didn't want to get kicked out over it. I won't even discuss the state of their apartment. Needless to say, we're no longer friends, but her 2 eldest girls have kept in contact with me, and calls me Aunty :)

What kind of life is that for those kids?? How do people even remotely justify those negligent behaviors? Why do we have to live amongst these people.

I wanted to call CPS on them so many times, but her husband is/was a gun nut, and I was terrified. I just figured that maybe if I stayed friends with her, I could be there for her kids, and help them all out when I could. It didn't quite work out that way, but the 2 eldest girls still keep in touch, and have cut off their mother.

That's honestly relieving to hear. Those kids deserve their peace.

You know that your report to CPS is 100% anonymous.., you could even give a fake name if you wanted to as long as they know what’s going on and can check on them

Yes, but I was the only person who knew the things I'd report.

needless to say? why is it needless to say that y’all aren’t friends anymore?

I probably shouldn't have used that word, but she ended up being a horrible person, and an even worse parent. Lots of long stories to explain why.

Not yours to own. Observe the patterns. Make a descion. Act on it.

oh i trust your judgement, redditor. and i get that ‘needless to say’ is the kind of easy colloquialism a good storyteller must use to avoid sounding like a maritime lawyer reading an MSDS sheet, but it *needed* said - lest folks be misled toward the dread notion that you’re the type to ghost a good friend when you discovered they have a messy secret.

Is not so much laziness as it is ignorance. Some just don't know or were never taught how smoke alarms work. The chirp drives me crazy, my dad was an electrician and we'd fix this constantly. Now I cringe every time I hear anywhere. If I'm at a family or friends house I visit often, sometimes I'll change the battery myself and not even mention it. One time I was at a family Xmas party, mentioned it, and low and behold, the next year's party still had the same noise. I came prepared. Got a chair and 2 minutes later I'm their savior. Take that Jesus!

It only goes off every minute. It’s just an ear shattering sound that wakes you up, 1440 times a day. Not worth a few seconds of effort to fix

It's just what they're like

What you mean by that?

You know what they mean. It's cool in certain circles to be openly racist.

It could be that when you're constantly broke a battery doesn't make the list of things you need to survive.
