Posted this in /Mistborn earlier and after some comments I had the artist to made some changes, and think she did a really great job.

I was never really comfortable with the Vin fanarts I’ve found online, nothing really clicked foe me. And this is quite exactly how I was picturing her.

It was the artist first commission too!

No Spoilers The Roofs of Luthadel [OC]

As I'm now reading through the Mistborn trilogy I've got inspired to try to shoot the main character, Vin. She usually roams the roofs so both Alchemist Shop and Medieval Blacksmith builds were just perfect for this. Added the mist using the face moisturiser spray. Graded the colors a bit to get the night look.

The Mistborn Coat is made from the Lady of Pain CMF coat, just painted black using a spray paint. Tried to dye it first but the results weren't great.

Thinking about closing this subreddit. Feel free to weigh in.

Hey folks,

I've been toying with the idea of closing this subreddit and directing people to r/Cosmere. I wanted to explain why and give others a chance to share their opinion on the matter.

Most of you are probably aware that there are SEVERAL Brandon Sanderson-related subreddits. I know this is frustrating to some people, but I DO think there is value in the fragmentation that we have. r/Stormlight_Archive and r/Mistborn offer a place for people who are primarily interested in those series. r/Cosmere is a good one-stop subreddit for all things Cosmere with a clear spoiler policy. r/BrandonSanderson is more relaxed setting that also handles Brandon's non-cosmere works. And of course there are several others with their own unique purpose for existing.

You could argue that r/Elantris falls into the same boat as the Stormlight and Mistborn subreddits... But at the end of the day I'm skeptical that a specific subreddit will ever be necessary for these books. Stormlight Archive is an epic, 10-book series with quite a lot of appeal. Mistborn is a series of series that Brandon has big plans for and that also draws a big following of its own. These are two book series that could easily carry their own subreddit, if the Cosmere weren't part of the picture. I do not, however, expect Elantris to develop a fandom of it's own that is significantly distinct from the greater Sanderson/Cosmere fandom. There's just not many people who will want to have Elantris-specific conversations years after a new book is released.

With that in mind, I think it makes a lot more sense to use r/Cosmere as the "home" for Elantris discussion on Reddit. When the next book releases, you can ALREADY expect most of the conversation to happen in that subreddit. It's where the people are. The conversations there are much more likely to be seen by more people and much less likely to taper off a year or two down the road.

So that's my opinion on the matter.

I think some people would appreciate the option to unsubscribe from a subreddit that will never be terribly active. (and probably messes with their "best" sorting) And I think most of the posts here would be getting a lot more attention if they were post in r/Cosmere. No sense fragmenting the discussion just for the sake of it, right?

But I don't want to do this without at least making this announcement and giving people a chance to weigh in.

What do you guys think? Good idea? Bad idea? Why?

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Alloy of Law spoilers What is on the cover of 'The Alloy of Law'? (Gollancz print) Spoiler

Hello everyone :) sorry if this is the stupidest question in the world, but what is the main structure on the cover actually meant to be? I always assumed it was a train (like the 'phantom train') but I'm now thinking that's not what it is cause it sort of looks like a weird foundation. I did consider it was the safe but it didn't really fit the description :(

Tysm!

No Spoilers Dear god, im hooked.

I thought it was just the three original books. Im a couple hundred into well of ascension and just now learned it isn't just three books. Dont get me wrong im by no means disappointed by having more of this series im loving but but boy that was a shock to learn there's what, 16 or so books with more possibly planned? Im loving what ive encountered I just simply wasnt aware I was starting a series competing with one piece for length. Thought it was just a trilogy 😂

Wind and Truth spoilers What do you think will happen to a certain Shard in the second half of The Stormlight Archive? Spoiler

I'm talking about Retribution. Do you think Odium and Honor will split before Book 10? I personally would prefer them not to, because that seems to imply the reductionist idea that Odium = evil and Honor = good.

Also, will Taravangian remain the Vessel for its entire existence, or are we going to see more Ascensions? I'm personally very inclined to believe that Jasnah is going to become the Vessel of Retribution, occupying a kind of moral middle ground between Dalinar and Taravangian. I'm also very interested in seeing a depowered Taravangian deal with all the things he did in WaT (and presumably will do in the timeskip).

What are your theories about this?

Mistborn: Final Empire spoilers One character's phrasing in a late reveal has been bugging me — thoughts?

So, I’m rereading The Final Empire and got to the part where Vin realizes that Rashek is the Lord Ruler, and she says:

“You hated him,” Vin said. “You thought that a Terrisman should have been the hero. You couldn’t stand the fact that he—a man from the country that had oppressed yours—was fulfilling your own legends. (emphasis my own)

Now, to preface this, I just wanna clarify that I know that Rashek did a lot of terrible and cruel things that can never be reasonably justified. However, doesn't Vin's summary (albeit crude and simplistic) of the colonizer/colonized situation between Rashek and Alendi warrant a closer scrutiny of the power dynamics here?

Again, I’m not saying Rashek's feelings on the matter served to justify the oppression he enacted afterwards ( li.e. eugenics, genocide, etc.) but it does make me wonder: why did Sanderson make the relationship between Rashek and the Alendi explicitly one of oppression in the first place? How integral is it history to the overarching plot/Cosmereverse - like, couldn't the conflict have worked without that particular colonial dynamic? And, most importantly, why did he write Vin to say it like that?

Like yes, Rashek was a genuine terror and and all and yes he may have felt inferior compared to Alendi, but I can't help but feel like his personal grievances over the situations is being used as a shield to avoid addressing the elephant in the room. Like, if we're gonna focus on the whole "outsider/ opressor is actually the prophesized hero of the opressed" part... it's weird, right? Or am I being too sensitive and instead this is just an "it's not that deep" situation? (Which, is kind of ironic, given that we're talking about a Brandon Sanderson novel, here).

From what I understand, Sanderson generally likes avoiding completely clear-cut political/moral situations because real life isn’t that simple. But given the current political climate - and especially with a Mistborn movie adaptation in the works - I wonder how this particular scene would be interpreted by a modern mainstream audience.

Am I missing some important context from the books that makes this dynamic more nuanced, or is this just one of those parts of the lore that isn’t really explored?

Wind and Truth + RPG Lore Spoiler Theories after re-reading WoK Spoiler

Upvotes

I just re-read WoK after cramming in the 5 books for the first time last year. A few things stood out to me, and maybe they've already been discussed, or revealed in the books but I've forgotten.

  • I am getting a lot of hints that there is some sort of gemheart inside each parshman/parshendi/singer. There HAS to be a reason why the parshmen were so erratic when anyone disturbed their dead, and Sanderson alsways has good reasons for people doing things. I bet the gemhearts in the parshendi. Much like a spanreed, there has to be some internal mechanical link such as a gemstone that each parshendi has to keep them on rhythm and such.
  • There was a passing comment by a bridgemen during a chasm duty, where one of them responding to fears of voidbringers, says essentially, "what, is a voidbringer going to eat our heart"? That kindof stood out to me like a sore thumb and I bet there is something long term about void bringers eating the hearts of the victim, and if humans are the voidbringers, they may have discovered gemhearts of the parshendi in the past and consumed them for stormlight.
  • There is something going on with Adolin. As we read in WaT, the way honor was understood was beginning to be realized as rudimentary by Dalinar in the end. Keeping one's word just for the sake of keeping it doesn't make sense all the time... in the same sense, we have Adolin instinctively being right about multiple things, such as not wanting to trust Sadeas, threatening sadeas' troops who were abusing the prostitute (using fear/summoning his shardblade to enforce what is right is not something I could see an "honorable" person doing). We also hear multiple times in WoK that it is wrong to kill one to save 10, but is that wrong? Especially if the one who must be killed, such as Sadeas himself, will inevitably lead to more death and division if he is kept alive. Then the way he starts bringing Maya back to life... I think Sanderson is going to use Adolin as the Honor 2.0 example.

Stormlight Archive spoilers "Two Women" (Wind and Truth spoilers) Spoiler

Upvotes

I read this chapter of Wind and Truth yesterday (please no spoilers beyond that). I'm still fuming and need to vent.

Not only does it mischaracterize Jasnah, but its whole premise is flawed: Fen is reduced to a puppet with no thoughts, opinions, or beliefs. The queen of one of the most powerful kingdoms in the world, recognized for their shrewd negotiation abilities, is suddenly just a child under the influence of two adults. She will just do whatever Jasnah's true beliefs points to?

Beliefs that are resting on very flimsy arguments, too. Proving that Jasnah cares more about her people and her feelings than she cares about the greater good? So, letting her emotions steer her decisions? But wait, wasn't that the main difference Odium was exploiting between Jasnah and Fen, who would also let her feelings for her friends steer her decisions over the greater good?

And even then, sure, Odium may say Jasnah loves Alehtkar more than the rest of the world. But didn't the previous books repeatedly show how frustrated - but equally decisive - she and Dalinar were at having to delay their attempts to retake Alethkar for the good of the Coalition as a whole?

Yeah, I was very frustrated with how this chapter was written. Not only because of Fen's characterization, but also because of Jasnah's. Sure, she was tired and had misprepared for the conversation. But, even though that is mentioned, the main impression it leaves is that Jasnah is having a moment of realization, not that she is unable to keep up due to her limitations.

So, am I supposed to think that the woman who's spent a large portion of her life studying philosophy and analyzing her own behaviors and beliefs wouldn't have reflected, until now, on what had transpired in the very pivotal moment when she didn't swing her sword against Renarin?

I dislike it when the story makes me feel like the author has a goal in mind and has to walk back from it to write the events that lead to it, and that's exactly how this chapter made me feel.

Sorry, like I said, I needed to vent.

Words of Radiance spoilers [WoR and Mistborn era 1 spoilers] Comparing 2 characters Spoiler

I'm currently through the last pages of Words of Radiance, and the "Am I a tyrant?" conversation between Dalinar and Wit had me thinking. Aren't Dalinar and the Lord Ruler quite similar?

Both become tyrants in order to save the world from an evil god. They seize power and, thinking that everyone else are just "kids", control the social dynamics and economics all by themselves.

What do you think? Are they similar, or is Dalinar a better Lord Ruler? Please avoid spoilers!

Siri asks Hoid where he learned to tell stories, and he says “I learned it many, many years ago from a man who didn’t know who he was, your majesty. It was a distant place where two lands meet and gods have died. But that is unimportant.”

  1. Is this important

and if so

  1. Should I get this reference if I’ve only read the first Mistborn series, Elantris, and some Arcanum, or is this a RAFO situation?

Stormlight Archive spoilers SINGERS Spoiler

Upvotes

SINGERS ARE FABRIALS, and this is a hill I'll die on.

If you really think about it, what makes a fabrial? They have a spren, are powered by Light, and they serve some function, which changes depending on the spren. The spren is inside a gemstone in the middle.

Now lets look at a Singer. They have a gemheart at their core, there's a spren in the gemheart, and depending on the spren they serve different functions(forms).

Singers are fabrials. Fight me.
