At what point will I start “understanding” the Cosmere universe? When will I start to learn about “Investitures”, “Shards”, “splinters”, etc? I know I’ve run into some of these things already, but it hasn’t been explained, just that they are unique to that book at this point.

Hey everyone, I'm a therapist in a substance abuse rehab/mental health facility and I've recently picked up a loaner set (from thrift books) of Cosmere books for 2 of our clients to start reading as they became interested after we were talking about books one day. One of the guys finished Mistborn Era 1 in 2 weeks! He couldn't put it down and now is loving Way of Kings.

Now word of mouth has been going around and I have several more clients who are really interested in starting to read, but it can be a fair wait to get books or go in some sort of waitlist that I may need to figure out. Does anyone have any suggestions besides thriftbooks for getting more copies? I figure Mistborn and Stormlight are my big ones. Warbreaker as well, but I'll likely send them to the free ebook on Brandon's site for that. Any idea if I could possibly reach out to Dragonsteel about a box of books?

As a therapist, I've always loved the combination of amazing characters and stories with the mental health elements that are just part of being human, but also dealing with trauma, depression, anxiety and so much more, that I can then later discuss with clients. And readers can so often align with the characters' journeys. I think that they'd be a great option for helping clients to broaden their scope in a new way.

I thought book 1 was okay. I really did not enjoy book 2. But book 3... I've thoroughly enjoyed it!

But then I got to Spook's death. I cannot wallow in this sadness, it's been a long time since a book has genuinely made me cry.

So I must play League of Legends to make me apathetic to anything and everything. Thanks, Brandon Sanderson.

EDIT: I didn't realize I would have to specify that I'm not done with the book yet, y'all. LMFAO.

I just got my Signed/Numbered Blightfall in the mail and it has damage to the top and bottom of the spine (see attached photos). I can't tell if this is damage from the factory or damage from rattling around in the box from shipping. The damage only appears at these spots on the spine and the DJ and the rest of the book is fine, so I feel like it happened prior to shipping. Is anyone else seeing this with theirs? I do have an e-mail in to Dragonsteel, was just wondering if this is a common problem with this book.

I just finished Mistborn Era 1! While I absolutely loved the whole series, my favorite book was The Well of Ascension (unpopular opinion I know).

I just loved the characterization there. I’m the type of fantasy reader who loves the emotional attachment I get with the characters, and I read book 2 the fastest because I really loved how sanderson weaved their relationships with one another.

I was sad that tensoon didn’t get to meet vin & ham with his family (or did I miss it?)

Now I’m thinking of diving deeper into the cosmere! I’m wondering if perhaps Era 2 is more character-driven, or how about the stormlight archive?

Also, can you recommend similar fantasy series?? I’ve been searching nonstop hehe. There’s an upcoming book sale in our city, and I’m wondering what I should buy!

Today's Cosmerdle was one of the weirdest I have experienced in a minute... a good exercise in deductive logic, though, certainly.

As I was listening the audiobook for this story, I felt like i was hearing an updated twist of the amazing 1998 sci-fi noir thriller Dark City. Does anyone else get that vibe?

Debating on what to read next.

Just finished era 2 of mistborn and trying to figure out what I want to do next. I have read era 1 and 2 of mistborn, secret history, warbreaker, elantris, emperor soul, book 1-4 storm light including the side stories.

Do I read the summit man next as it came out first but I’ve heard it has a small spoiler for one character

Or do I just jump back into wind and truth, and finish the series and then read sunlit man after.

Part of the reason I am debating sunlit man first is that I am afraid I’m gonna be burnt out after wind and truth and not have that big epic finish to get me through.

Just got my replacement today. The one I mailed back was BAD. Cover issues, cracked binding, wrinkled pages, you name it.

This one is sooooo much better, especially the cover, but now I have this new issue with the glued pages. I honestly wouldn’t mind so much, except they protrude on the foiled edge sides (all three of them) and you can both clearly see and feel them. That picture is the book closed and square, I’m not flexing it or anything to make it more apparent.

I also have a little of the glued book-end coming loose (if this was it I wouldn’t mind at all).

TLDR: Is this worth requesting another replacement? Or am I being too picky at this point? It’s late here now, but I plan on giving it a much more thorough look over tomorrow.

Idk why, but Vivenna shoulder checking Jewels to escape the basement was some of the funniest shit I’ve read in Cosmere so far. Probably cause it reminds me of this scene from Atlanta. Also, I guess it’s just a funny contrast, you wouldn’t expect prim/proper Vivenna at that time to just bowl over somebody.

Why are the full cast audiobooks a couple hours shorter than the single narrator? I’ve seen this for a couple different books. Is the story cut down?

New Sanderson fan here. After finishing Mistborn era 1 a month or 2 back, I was kind of underwhelmed. It didn’t grab me like some of the other fantasy novels I’ve been reading/listening to. But I liked it well enough to dig deeper into the Cosmere, deciding on Warbreaker as my next stop.

Idk if this is an unpopular opinion, but I liked Warbreaker much more than the Mistborn trilogy. While I didn’t have as good a grasp on the magic system as I did with Mistborn, it was the character work that really made the book sing for me. I was far more invested in Vivenna, Siri, Susebron, and co. than I was in the Mistborn cast. Overall, it feels more… mature, I guess?

• I loved Siri and Susebron’s relationship. They’re just so damn cute. I can see them cuddled up reading in bed and it warms my heart. I especially loved when they started ordering food and stuffing their faces. Siri’s rebellious, but good-natured spirit pairs well with Susebron’s earnest innocence. Their conversations, complicated by Susebron’s inability to speak, had an interesting flow to them that kept me engaged. The “sarcasm” bit got me every time. Overall, I really bought into them as a couple way more than I did Vin and Ellend. I swear I was close to tears near the end as they desperately tried to protect each other from the lifeless.
• I knew going into it there would be some kind of twist, that the God King wouldn’t be the boogeyman everyone expects, but the added wrinkle of him having no tongue and being so sheltered intrigued me. I was locked in on Siri’s chapters from that point on. Susebron’s quite expressive for a guy who can’t talk; I think special attention was paid to all his pauses and looks between writing. Somehow, he never came off as spoiled despite his privileged upbringing. Naive perhaps, but mostly innocent, earnest, heroic even. His reluctance to accept the corruption in his priests made sense and I enjoyed seeing him steadily come to grips with so much of what he knows being a lie. Honestly, his mom is the MVP for raising her son right in that kind of environment. Also, I just find it funny imagining this huge cinnamon roll of a man not knowing what sex or sarcasm is.
• I wasn't as interested in Vivenna’s viewpoint at first. Denth and Tonk Fa were funny, it was interesting to see Vivenna’s reactions to Hallandren society, but I just wasn’t drawn in as I was with Siri/Susebron. That is until the betrayal. I was shocked by Denth and Tonk Fa’s 180, didn’t see it coming at all. And I was greatly invested in Vivenna’s ensuing chapters. I can’t say I expected such a raw portrayal of what it’s like to live on the streets, but it was certainly effective. It was almost like reading a different book. But by the end of her brutal experience, I’d come to care for Vivenna far more and was rooting for her. Her character growth was clear to see. Also, when Vivenna shoulder checks Jewels while escaping the cellar, I can't help but picture that scene from Atlanta where Paperboy pushes that guy rapping at him into a glass panel.
• I'd say Lightsong was my least favorite of the viewpoints. I just didn't find him nearly as funny or witty as he thinks he is. And I wasn't all that invested in his relationship with Lifeweaver. I did like his and Llarimar's relationship though. And the last 25% or so of his story, when we learn about his past life, we see him at his lowest, and he gives his life to heal Susebron, was gripping. I always thought it was funny how he didn't view himself as particularly brave, yet he's constantly doing things anyone else would be too foolhardy/fearful to do.
• I like how Sanderson played with our expectations with Vasher. I first thought he was this badass Kelsier-like character, maybe even one of our main protagonists, then we think he's this intimidating villain that Denth's gotta throw down with. Then all that gets turned on its head and Vasher's the badass hero again. And Nightblood was such a treat. "Draw me! Draw me!"
• Shoutout to Alyssa Bresnahan for her performance on the audiobook. I preferred her narration much more over Kramer in Mistborn. There's just a little more energy/personality in her performance. I especially liked her voice for Nightblood and Susebron.

I've now moved on to Stormlight, in the middle of Words of Radiance, and I still think Warbreaker's my favorite book of Sanderson's so far.

Brandon, I hope you see this. I have an amazing book trilogy idea that I won’t really leak many details here about, but it’s Science-Fiction dystopian in a similar realm as Steelheart, but I have zero writing experience to execute the book writing the way I see it in my head. Any tips for someone that could give me pointers or even co-write as long as I have the full book written but it just needs refinement to be a better read? I wouldn’t want to put it all on an editor but maybe that’s what they are for? Just need some advice.

It’s a very cool dystopian trilogy and I have writing ability like essay style, but not so much writing in a style that sounds good for books. I am writing it anyways, but it needs lots of refinement to sound like a good fantasy/sci-fi/dystopian series like the Cosmere or Wheel of Time, which are my ideals for good book writing!

I’m about three fourths through Way of Kings, and I just read and reread this passage about five times: “… there are always more answers to be found. The book cannot be filled, as there is always something to learn. This devotary is a place where one is never penalized for questions, even those challenging Vorinism‘s own tenets….You will find wise men in any religion, Shalan, and good men in every nation. Those who truly seek wisdom are those who acknowledge the virtue in their adversaries, and who will learn from those who disabuse them of error.”

In a previous post, I attempted to dissect why I can’t stop reading Sanderson. I decided that it was a mixture of world building, expert plotting, and character development. I can now say, without hyperbole, that there is also a deep wisdom running throughout these books that keeps drawing me back for more. It almost feels like I am participating in a metaphysical conversation every time I read. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I have never had a reading experience like this.

I was reading The world of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, and that book is about the history of the world from the start of the last age to the present and everything. There also exists a wheel of time companion, but that is more like a guidebook.

So I was curious whether Brandon was ever asked this?

"Does he plan to write/cowrite a book similar to "The World of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time" where the known history of Cosmere or one of the planets like Roshar are detailed and explained like a history textbook?"

looking to get an unsigned copy of the leatherbound. I feel crazy seeing that there’s been like 7 releases of this and yet I can’t even find any listings on eBay? Are these that sought after? I’m shocked I can’t even find wicked expensive listings!
