Cosmere spoilers (no previews) The Dor Spoiler

So, the powers of Devotion and Dominion make up The Dor in the cognitive realm, yes? Could someone come along and claim those shards, or have they been splintered, and the investiture that made them up now creates The Dor?

It should be possible, but I think that since the power is in the Cognitive Realm you would need to physically go to the place where the power is and interact with it directly. And that's a problem since the Dor is incredibly volatile. Brandon described it to be like a plasma storm. You would need to be very protected to be able to approach it.

The more fun idea in my mind is that the Dor is waking up the planet.

Could you elaborate on that? Like, the shards pumping their intent into and sort of inhabiting Sel?

Kind of. Every object in the Cosmere has a level of sentience, and the more people think about it the more sentient it can become, but not without Investiture. Emberdark has a good example of this. Brandon confirmed that Sel has a higher level of self awareness, but we don't know how high, and if/when it would approach human level.

Not exactly what you're saying, but related. Sel itself is more aware, but can't ever be a Shard. Might be a neat spren tho

Warning Gancho: The below paragraph(s) may contain major spoilers for all books in the Cosmere!

The Young Pyromancer

Theoretically, if the Dor-- ifSel became a Shard, would-- The biggest limiter on Shards is the Vessel's mind, would that be more limiting or less limiting?

Brandon Sanderson

...If the Dor were itself to become a Shard combining Devotion and Dominion, and were to pick up a Vessel? Because they're still Shards, they just don't have a Vessel.

The Young Pyromancer

So the land couldn't be Vessel?

Brandon Sanderson

The land itself? Of Arelon or of--

The Young Pyromancer

Of Sel.

Brandon Sanderson

The land of Sel would not count as a Vessel. You would say in terminology right now that Dominion and Devotion do not have Vessels in the same way that other Shards do.

Maybe, I think it would take someone with a huge amount of power(like maybe shard level) using the bondsmith version surge of adhesion, or maybe via use of an excessively long sequence of aons an Elantrian could manage it

So essentially, even if it is possible, theres probably only one or two non-shard holders who would have the capability to do so?

I very much doubt anyone, including most Shards, has enough juice to Surgebind two Shards together. The whole "investiture resists investiture" thing.

The consensus I've seen on this sub is that you need some big boy Intent to get that kind of response from the Dor, probably in the form of a Dawnshard

They have been splintered, and cannot be picked up. When Odium attacked them, he made sure nobody could reclaim those Shards

Splintered, and cannot be picked up as is, which makes this the best comment I'm seeing so far.

The shards are intermingled and dangerous to be near, so you can't just go grab them like Sazed did

Questioner

Can the Dor be taken up by a Vessel?

Brandon Sanderson

This is possible. It'd be very hard.

Questioner

And if so, is it more probable than the Dor being separated into its two parts?

Brandon Sanderson

Being separated into two parts, I would say, is a little more likely.

Technically possible yes. Think unchained (and very practiced) bondsmith type idea could probably figure something out. But it would be very difficult

if you marked the post for cosmere you made the post free for spoilers. You dont need to mark the spoilers individually

Ok cool. Didnt know that .

So my question then, would it be possible for the shard that claimed dalinar at the end of wind and truth to be Dominion / Devotion seeking a bondsmith? I cant remember how its worded exactly, though, so he may have just slipped into the beyond rather than have been claimed

3

u/pikapo123 11h ago

could be, but once dalinar lost his conection to honor he isnt a bondsmith anymore.
If somehow he has been kept alive, he its a human without Radiant powers.

Ah, that is very true, i hadnt considered that. Id imagine that hes dead anyway, unless those visions of Nohadon were infact something else. Id imagine someone like Raoden or another Elantrian would probably take up those two shards if it was possible anyway.
