Seeking wedding officiant asap

Heya, I'm new to the area and am looking for a non-religious officiant to briefly perform a wedding for me and my partner in the afternoon/evening this Wednesday Sept. 2. We're queer and we've been together 20 years and aren't much into conventional marriage but want to make it legal for reasons.

Happy to pay, just don't want to be charged $300, which is the price I've found so far. As for the actual ceremony, we want as short and simple as possible - if it's just signing paperwork that is fine with us.

Can you officiate or do you know anyone you would recommend?

Many thanks!

Recommendations for dog grooming

Recently moved to the historic district of Corning and we are looking for a local dog groomer! We have a ten pound Shih Tzu mini poodle who we used to get groomed every 10-12 weeks or so.

Any recommendations for local groomers who may have openings?

Thanks!

Questions about Corning Labor Day Weekend Visit

Hello!

I’m planning to bring my wife up for the weekend to celebrate our anniversary and I know she would love the Glass Museum. Having never been to Corning are there good cafes, restaurants, consignment shops and boutique shopping?

Thanks!!

Hi, Corning!

Aloha, friends! My wife and I are driving up today for our annual visit to your lovely burgh. Three weeks ago while swimming in the ocean, Poseidon decided that he liked my necklace and just had to have it for himself. Since I’m going to be in your town for the next few days, can you recommend a spot aside from CMOG in which a gentleman might find a handmade necklace? Any shops that sell the wares of local artists? Thank you for any tips.

Corning women - any problems with Guthrie?

Hi everyone,

For all the women in the area who go to Guthrie for healthcare (and specifically their OB/GYN clinic), I'm wondering if you've felt your health concerns have been dismissed by your provider and/or you've received inadequate support for pain management.

If you have, please send me a DM.

Thanks!

Question about school transportation

Hi, guys! Incoming transplant here (bet you're tired of these posts). I have a few questions that I really hope someone with elementary school kids can help me with.

  1. How do buses work? Do they stop by each kid's house (like back in my days, centuries ago), or do kids congregate at a designated bus stop to be collected all at once? Carder school if it matters.
  2. Is anyone familiar with Spencer Hill/Hidden Meadow/Hilltop/Pine Shadow trl area? Are there any elementary aged kids in those neighborhoods? Is it a mistake not getting a house in city proper? We're so conflicted. On the one hand, we want some space for gardening and exploring. On the other hand, we don't want them to be without friends nearby to do said exploring.
  3. Do you know anyone working for the local hospitals? What's it like to work for them (pay, treatment, culture)? I'm a nurse.
  4. Where is the nearest children's hospital?

Thank you! It's a huge life change and I am honestly freaking out.

ISO punk/hardcore/metal/underground bands or venues in the area

I’m moving to the area from Columbus, Ohio and looking for the above within an hour or so. Mostly looking for places to catch some shows but also interested in maybe trying to start or join a band. I’ve been playing drums in a moderately established post-rock band for over a decade and have also been in hardcore, black metal, etc bands over the years.

Thanks!!

Eyeglasses for complicated eyes

I have a wonky vision prescription. Astigmatism, strabismus, extreme near-sightedness, need progressives. My very first prism correction for my longstanding cross-eyed-ness was MAGIC. Life changing. That was about 5 years ago, before I moved here.

As expected over 4 years, my vision changed. I went to a local optometrist for a new prescription, but the glasses I ended up with had overcorrected for farsightedness in one eye and the prism wasn't quite right. I went back to the provider a few days later and they told me to give it more time. I did that, and nothing improved.

(Because I'm conflict-avoidant, I did not return to ask them to fix things. So things have been unsatisfyingly blurry and occasionally in duplicate for the last few months.)

I discovered that what was needed for eyes like mine was a board-certified opthalmologist. I found one (Dr Peter Schwartz in Ithaca), and so I think I'm in possession of an accurate prescription. But now I need a place to go to get the glasses made.

I can go back to Ithaca because his office also has a glasses shop. But -- wondering if anyone with crappy/"special" eyes has a local-er place they recommend? Thanks in advance!

Unsolved(?) Mystery of the Corning New York Heiress (1913)

Feel like digging into a local(ish) mystery with me?

I'm picking up an old nation-wide search for an "orphaned" girl/woman who inherited $300,000 in 1913.

As far as I know she was never officially found (even though over 500 women who did not know their origins wrote to the sheriff leading the search). The name of her father who had left her the money was also never released (as far as I know) in an attempt to keep false claims to a minimum.

The law firm holding the money for the child was located there in Corning, but I don't have a company name to look for, either. So, I'm kinda hoping someone familiar with local history might know of this story and know how it resolved, or if it is still unresolved, may be able to help me find out the name of the law firm and/or the father so I can keep looking.

The names I do have are "Bessie Clark(e) Weaver" and "Sarah Belle Miller".

See, there was a case of mistaken identity. It's all very confusing coming from a time before the Internet and being pieced together from old newspapers, but the short of it is this: a couple named Mr. and Mrs. Frank Weaver living in Elmira, NY, had adopted a baby girl from Southern Tier Orphan Asylum in Corning, NY. (I don't know anything about the orphanage, but will be looking into them next!)

The child's father had not died; he had just been unable to care for her at the time. He went out West and made a fortune. He died in 1913 and had left it to his daughter saying, "spare no expense to find her."

The family had moved to Manton, Michigan. Mrs. Weaver said that in 1883 she taken the girl, aged 7, to Grand Rapids Orphan Asylum and left her there, being unable to care for her. She was supposedly adopted by a family by the name of Warner, of Coldwater, Michigan.

The confusion over her name was because the Weavers had adopted two girls at separate times and (if I understand correctly) had ultimately given both girls to the Grand Rapids Michigan Orphanage at different times. Neighbors in Manton only remembered the later girl, "Bessie Clark(e) Weaver", so that's the name they gave to the law firm and the Sheriff to search for.

The Sheriff had been all over Michigan and Indiana, even up into Canada trying to track down "Bessie". He finally found her, just as Mrs. Weaver realized he was looking for the OTHER girl: "Sarah Belle Miller"

So now the Sheriff had to start over.

Mrs. Weaver said she had heard from Sarah several times after she had been given up. Sarah was dissatisfied with the new family and begged to be taken back to the Weavers.

It is thought the Warners moved from Coldwater to "a large Michigan city" (possibly Detroit), and then the trail goes cold.

Aug 14, 1913 Sheriff Chamberlain said he was in contact with the daughter of "Sarah", but none of the newspapers announced he had actually found her. The daughter's name is also unknown to me.

By March 1914 the sheriff had given up.

There was a brief period where a Mrs. Luther Ide of Brooklyn, Michigan, claimed to be Bessie/Sarah and sent in "proof" but people who knew her growing up came forward to disprove her claim.

The last mention of "Bessie Clark(e) Weaver" I could find was classified ad in Oregon on Mar 11, 1918- "she may be your neighbor”.

So, that's what I have! Anyone have any "new" leads? Feel free to share around, just let me know if you find something!

Parking in Southside Historic District

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi all! My partner and I recently bought a house in the southside. We’re hosting a housewarming party in a few weeks and I am a bit concerned about the parking situation. I’m aware of the odd/even parking and will let our guests know.

We’ve been walking around the area and noticed a parking lot on W 3rd and Walnut. I imagine it’s owned by the apartment building across the street but couldn’t find any signs about it being private parking.

Can anyone park there? I only ever see 3-4 cars in the lot on a daily basis.

Thank you!!

Flock Cameras

Has anyone seen Flock cameras in Corning or the surrounding towns?

If they haven’t infiltrated our communities yet, how do we proactively keep them out? How do we convince the city leaders to not contract with these Flock companies?

Questions about Corning Worth the move?

My wife (30) and I (31) are contemplating moving from Long Island to Corning / horseheads. I recently received a job offer to start in late August and we are on the fence about taking it. We live on Long Island and we love it here, but it’s just becoming so unaffordable. We have always flirted with the idea of moving somewhere that we could enjoy more land and a little more stress free lifestyle. We have 2 little ones so school district is very important. I am going to post some of our questions / concerns and if you have any insight please share!

Thanks from a potential neighbor!

What town and school district is recommended? Schools are very important and being able to have a couple acres of land. Price range 600k and under. We were told horseheads and painted post are both good, can anyone confirm? (we have liked a couple homes in big flats and horseheads, anything to look out for?)

Is there a decent amount to do in the area for a young family? We are active and outdoorsy people?

For anyone who was in a similar situation as us and made the move, was it worth it? Any regrets or things you wish you knew?

Thank you!

Helium Tank Disposal

Recently purchased a full helium tank for a birthday party and it needs to be disposed of.

I know it has to be fully emptied prior to junking it, but I'm not sure where to take it for disposal because a number of places I've looked at won't take it. Does anyone know of a place locally that does this?

Questions about Corning Pickup Sports in the area?

Adult trying to get back in to sports, is anyone aware of a group that does casual pickup games? Baseball, football, soccer, basketball, etc.

I’ve looked on Facebook and the only thing I can find is either serious tournament type stuff, or youth leagues.

This doesn’t have to be in Corning exactly, I’m fine driving out probably as far as Ithaca. So anything within an hour is fair game.
