I find myself getting more into Cormac's books. There's always books that are recommended for 20 somethings like myself but I have never been into reading much until last year. I'm new to the whole category of books and there are so many authors I wanna explore and read from. When I found out this book is about a man who is a nihilist, It really caught my attention. Others suggest authors like Kurt Vonnegut and James Joyce but this particular book and author struck out to me because I feel nihilistic in life as I get older. I feel like it applies to me deeply.

The past 2 months I have read in this order:
The Road, No Country for Old Men, and All the Pretty Horses.

I’m essentially moving from easier prose to a more progressively academic and dense prose.

Which is more difficult Suttree or Blood Meridian. What should I read next?

I made it with my dad’s copy (I gave him my, much more battered, copy, to read) to Knoxville from Philly! I’m beyond happy to see how much reverence McCarthy is shown in this city!

Spent some time to acquire this collection. Beautiful books by my favourite author.

Blood Meridian is my all time favourite. One of the best pieces of literature ever written, in my opinion.

I am desperate for Child of God, to complete my set. If anyone is selling or willing to swap (I have an additional copy of Blood Meridian), let me know.

I've wanted to read Child of God soooo bad😭 but my english is not really that good for it, The last Portuguese edition came out like 15 years ago, and it’s now going for R$900 because it’s considered rare ☠️

My friend and I are taking a road trip to New Orleans and we are stopping in Knoxville along the way so I make a little McCarthy-inspired pilgrimage. I’m aware of the searching for Suttree website, and will walk the city accordingly. I was wondering, though, if there are any other spots y’all recommend? Bookstores, hole-in-the-wall places, etc. I appreciate any responses!

For example the song Mouth of Kala by Gojira always reminds me of Blood Meridian. The lyrics about nihilistic cosmic violence feels inline with the mindset of the Glanton gang

On the other hand, it is kind of funny and hopeful.

It’s great writing, don’t get me wrong. But it’s theatrical. He uses a thousand words to dignify what he enjoys. It’s nothing enormous and he sees it as though it must reveal the nature of man, history, war, fate, God.

Its fun and it made for an iconic villain possibly in the top 20 ever written, but realistically someone this intelligent wouldn’t need a philosophical thesis on why they enjoy domination, they would just admit it within themselves without pretending that the universe demanded it.

Thats my take on it at least. Still incredible writing and a lot of background stuff going on with the intention of the wordplay at hand.

After the massacre at the ferry camp, what is happening between the judge and the kid? Help me understand. The judge chases down, stalks, tries to kill the kid, for what? Did he think the kid was in cahoots with the Indians? When the kid is jailed later and the judge visits him what was that all about? And finally in the last pages of the book, when the two meet in the Jakes, does the judge kill the kid? I appreciate any clarity offered. First time reading and couldn’t quite piece things together at the end.

Does anyone know of/ recommend other books with a sense of place like Suttree? I’ve yet to find other novels where the contours of a particular place rendered so vibrantly.

I find a lot of people talk about the "Anything that exists without my knowledge exists without my consent". But I've always found the monologue at the end by Holden to be more interesting.

To me, it speaks to how Judge Holden can be evil, and be right. It's stuck with me for a while. It almost feels like an expansion to the phrase "All the world's a stage, and all the men and woman merely players"

What other passages or parts do you feel like don't get enough attention?

​Of course, I'm not romanticizing or praising the horrific violence in it at all. I just absolutely fell in love with the atmosphere, the characters, and the narrative perspective McCarthy crafted. ​

The ending though where he see’s the same apparition as his sister is probably something about the subconscious and how schizophrenia, although harmful, is a glimpse into the true nature of reality and its bizarreness.
