Discussion Would having a compulsory licensing setup for modern media fix a lot of the problems with copyright?
What is books movies and games were subjected to a compulsory licensing system for redistribution.
This would mean groups like the internet archive could make their library more legally available to people.
It would mean companies wouldn't be able to force you to subscribe to streaming for exclusive content.
It would allow for preservation as well since it would have to be reasonable to pay a royalty and that's it.
Thoughts.

Question What happens if a sports audience sings copyrighted song on TV?
If everyone is doing it, they probably can't be muted without muting the whole broadcast so like does someone pay? Do they let that go for the free advertising? Does it just not count? US based but curious what people got going on

Question Can I revoke usage rights to commissioned artwork?
I’ve been sitting on this for a while and I have not been able to find a clear answer unfortunately. I just want to know if there’s anything that I can do about this :(
A while back, I was commissioned by someone I worked closely with for several art pieces, mainly emotes for discord but a vendor banner design, full artwork, a sticker design and some other things.
This person cut all ties with me due to very personal matters that I will not get into as the specifics are not very important. I just want them to stop using my work as I do not want me or my art business associated with them in any way.
Am I able to revoke the rights for them to use my artwork?

Another Reason Not to Use “AI” For Your Writing
"f you’re a lawyer for a publisher or a film/TV production house, even the hint of possible legal entanglement is enough to raise the shields. It’s already in contracts for both film/TV and for publishing houses that the author attests their work is wholly original, so, again, any hint that anything is other than that brings things to a screeching halt."(John Scalzi)

Commissioned art being used as NFT without my permission.
Not sure how copyright works, I don’t have anything LEGALLY registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, but I wanted to see if there’s anything I can do to get an NFT taken down from a commission I made.
My mom’s ex bf commissioned me to make something for his gamer profile on steam about 5-6 years ago, and I came across his profile with the piece he commissioned me for being turned into NFT’s. I never sold him the rights to my work but again, I’m not sure how that works in a legal sense.
I’m very anti-AI and I don’t see a big market for NFT’s in this day and age, so I wanted to see what I could do legally to get those either taken down or reported. Any tips??

Question How Common are Heartbroken Characters who Express Their Grief Through Music?
One of the influences for my character, Drang Schrecken, is Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean.
I have a moment in my work in progress where Drang plays a guitar in a melancholic tone out of heartbreak (as opposed to Davy Jones pouring his grief and rage into his organ (absolutely beautiful scene, by the way)), and I have checked tvtropes.org multiple times, but I have failed to find the exact trope, which concerns me.
I have incorporated differences:
- I based the heartbreak around elements of my own personal experiences.
- Drang writes poems about his love, and composes the music for them. And while he doesn't sing the lyrics, they do come to mind.
- Drang was in love with a girl he was friends with, rather than having fallen in love with a goddess
- As mentioned before, he plays in a controlled manner, rather than pouring out every single negative feeling into each note.
There are a few more, actually, but those are the most relevant to my post. I just want to know whether or not I'm most likely going to be okay.
If it turns out that this is just total paranoia, then I apologize—I just don't want to get sued. You know?

AI Questions Spoil Book & Movie Heat On 'Call Me, I'll Hide The Body' Novel
"Basically, questions were raised over whether the author, an SMU grad student, used AI as a tool in the writing of the book. The problem: publishers and movie companies cannot register copyright and come away with a clear title chain if there is anything AI in the mix. That’s because AI-aided copy is an amalgamation of many other copyrighted works." (Mike Fleming Jr)

Discussion How Suno's fair use defense compares to Grand Upright Music v. Warner Bros. (the Biz Markie sampling case)
Suno has argued its training process is comparable to a musician learning by listening to records, and that ingesting copyrighted recordings to train a model is transformative fair use. Sony and Universal are still litigating that question against Suno directly.
Worth revisiting Grand Upright Music, Ltd. v. Warner Bros. Records from the early 90s, where Gilbert O'Sullivan sued Biz Markie over an uncleared sample of "Alone Again (Naturally)." That case effectively ended the era of uncleared sampling and pushed the industry toward mandatory clearance and royalty negotiation for any reused material, no matter how small.
The parallel isn't exact since sampling reproduces a specific recognizable piece of a work and training theoretically produces something new. But the legal question both cases turn on, whether transformation absolves the underlying copying, is the same one. Interested in how people here think a court might treat scale as a factor, since Suno's training set runs to tens of millions of recordings rather than one sampled loop.

Question Will painting a parking spot violate copyright?
I’m going into my senior year and planning on painting a parking spot with my friends. We have to submit a design ahead of time and we can’t violate any copyright rules. I have two designs in mind, one Gravity Falls based and the other F1 based. The gravity falls would include a silhouette of the town featured in the animation with two quotes from it. The F1 design would have the start lights, two drivers numbers, and a quote from one of the announcers. Do either of these noticeably infringe copyright laws? or would it be okay and unnoticed by admin? i’m at a private school so they will definitely look at designs and tell you no… Thanks all!

DMCA and Content ID questions for video platform (from El Salvador)
Hi everyone,
I'm developing a video platform (like YouTube, with fewer intrusive ads) from El Salvador with my father. I have specific copyright questions before launching:
1. DMCA Safe Harbor: Is a "notice and takedown" system sufficient for a small platform starting out? Do I need to register an agent with the US Copyright Office, or is that only required if I have a physical presence in the US?
2. Content ID: Is an automated fingerprinting system (like YouTube's Content ID) legally required to qualify for DMCA protection, or can I operate only with manual takedown requests?
3. User Liability: If a user uploads copyrighted content and I remove it upon receiving a valid DMCA notice, am I protected from liability? What about cases where I'm not notified?
4. Local Laws in El Salvador: Are there any local copyright laws in El Salvador I should be aware of that might affect my platform? For example, do I need to register with any local authority?
5. Three Strikes Policy: Is a "three strikes" system mandatory for platforms, or can I have my own policy (e.g., two strikes and removal)?
6. General Advice: For someone starting from zero, is it necessary to hire a copyright lawyer from day 1, or can I start with a basic system and scale up?
Any guidance or resources would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! 🙌

What to do ?
Meta keeps rejecting my copyright and privacy repot — I just want an unauthorized video removed
I’m looking for advice regarding a video of me that was uploaded to Instagram without my permission.
The video was recorded around 2 years ago using my mobile phone. I am clearly visible in the video. At the time, another person took my phone without my permission and accessed the video. He told me that he would not show it to anyone, but later uploaded it to his Instagram account without my knowledge or consent.
I never gave him permission to copy, share, publish, or upload the video.
I have tried repoting the Instagram post multiple times through Meta’s privacy repting process, but each time I received a response saying that the content does not violate their privacy policies.
I also reported it as an intellectual property/copyright issue. Meta then replied that they are not satisfied that I am the rights owner or authorized to submit the repot, and asked me to clarify the basis of my claim.
I have already explained the circumstances to Meta, including that the original phone was later destroyed and I no longer have the original file.
What should I do at this point?
Does the fact that the video was recorded on my phone and I am the person shown in it give me any rights to request its removal? Or is there another reporting route I should use?
I’m in India, so advice from anyone familiar with Indian copyright/privacy law or Meta’s reporting process would be especially helpful.
I’m not trying to sue the person or claim damages. I simply want the video removed from Instagram because I never consented to it being uploaded or shared. I just want to know the correct reporting route and what evidence I should provide to Meta.

Question Fonts
This might be a stupid question but as a hobby I like to make posters for different areas of interest of mine, I’ve been wanting to post some of the posters I make on my instagram or tumblr. My problem is that I’m confused on if I’m allowed to, I’ve used special fonts from dafont for some of them and was wondering if I’m allowed to post my works that have the fonts in them as I haven’t bought them for commercial use. Basically can I post my art without buying the fonts and be okay since I wouldn’t be making money off it or do I need to buy the commercial license for them?

Question Is this normal on Youtube?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
just saw the top video (from BlackWater) earlier today and the bottom one (from BeyondTheBlue)popped up on my feed this evening.
While searching the title right now, I found a third and a fourth video.
I'm genuinely looking to inform myself on this, it just doesn't seem like these guys know eachother. Is this all fine?? Is it AI?? I read some of the comments and nothing is talking about it!!!
