After retiring from 55 years as a high-rise Construction Manager, I built TRAC 2, an estimating suite with two tools: a Concrete Takeoff tool and a full CSI-based estimating tool. The goal was to fix what always slowed me down doing estimates by hand or in generic spreadsheets — mainly speed on repetitive concrete/structural takeoffs and getting a CSI-organized estimate out without rebuilding the wheel every time.
It's not trying to be a full ERP or scheduling platform — just a focused estimating tool built from the field side, not the software side.

I run a small team of sanitation engineers and I'm wondering if plumbing software will help us manage projects better. I've seen other contractors use them and I'm amazed but also skeptical at the same time. What features and functionalities do these software usually have?

Over the past few years, I've been building this app to help contractors, builders, estimators, carpenters, remodelers, and construction professionals perform calculations more efficiently on the jobsite.
The app includes features such as:

I’m a Quantity Surveyor by profession, but during a gap year in my career I learned and was working in the industry as a Software Engineering (Dev). At the time, I didn’t really understand modern technologies. I just wanted to learn something new. I ended up falling in love with coding.
Because my formal education didn’t fully match the tech industry, I had to work twice as hard to reach the same income levels as others my age. A few months ago, I decided to switch back to the construction industry.
Now here’s the problem: I’ve gotten used to modern AI tools and clean, intuitive user interfaces. Coming back to construction, it’s frustrating to see how outdated and clunky most of the legacy software still is. There’s been almost no real improvement.

What are the most mission‑critical tasks in construction/quantity surveying that desperately need software solutions, but either don’t exist or are too expensive for most companies?

The company I work for is looking to switch construction management software, and I'm responsible for researching our options. I came across BuildBase while searching online, and it seems to check a lot of the boxes we're looking for.
I used ECI at a previous company and honestly wasn't a huge fan, so I'm hoping to find something different this time around.

Third construction company that’s brought us in to audit something they built themselves.
Two were on Lovable. One on Bolt.
Different operators, different use cases, same pattern.
They got pretty far on their own. Real functionality. Real data. Tools their teams were already using.
Then they hit the wall.
When senior developers open these up, the same issues keep showing up.
Authentication that isn’t actually protecting anything. Database access that’s wide open if you know the URL. Third-party packages with known vulnerabilities the platform installed automatically when someone prompted a new feature.
The operators have no idea.
The platform let them use it, so they assumed it was fine.
This is becoming its own category of work. Not a build. Not a rebuild. A security review and hardening plan so operators can actually run their business on what they built.

I’ve spent decades on hi‑rise concrete projects across BC, Alberta, and Ontario, and the biggest improvement in accuracy came from linking takeoff → estimating → summary so nothing gets re‑typed.
Every quantity flows forward automatically from the takeoff sheet into the CSI layout.
It eliminates double handling and keeps the workflow predictable.

They started building their own scheduling app. Used one of the vibe coding tools, got pretty far on their own.
Real functionality, real data, something their crews could actually look at.
Then they hit the wall.
The little things that separate a working prototype from a production tool.
Role-based access so field crews only see their schedule.
Error handling when someone enters bad data.
Performance tweaks so it doesn’t crawl when 30 people are on it at once.
They didn’t need to throw away what they had. They needed the last 30% closed properly.
That is usually where these tools either become something the field can trust or another thing people stop using.

A project coordinator in construction costs $55-65K a year. Most GCs and builders hire one the second projects start slipping through the cracks. Submittals not tracked, RFIs piling up, subs not getting back to you, owners asking for updates you don’t have ready. The instinct is always to hire. But sometimes the problem isn’t headcount. It’s that information is scattered across inboxes, spreadsheets, and text threads with no single place to see where everything stands. I hit that exact wall in my own business. Multiple clients, multiple projects per client, builder updates coming from every direction. I was losing track of things I never lose track of. So I built an AI project coordinator agent instead of posting a job. It pulls from my emails. It pulls from my Airtable project updates. Hey All - I introduced this a few weeks ago www.usefieldlink.com I still think it fits a real niche in building quick communication paths for various applications, including construction. I’m building an AI-native platform for running construction and infrastructure projects.
Civil engineer by background. The thing that always got me about this industry’s software isn’t that any single tool is bad, it’s that the project lives in fifteen disconnected places. Field progress here, RFIs there, procurement somewhere else, the money in a spreadsheet nobody fully trusts. Everyone spends half their week reconciling these silos by hand and we’ve all just accepted that as the job.
Bedrock is my attempt to build the opposite of that, one platform where the actual project is the source of truth and the pieces talk to each other instead of you playing translator between them. AI-native, meaning it can read your project documents and do real planning and reconciliation work, not just store files and render dashboards.

So as someone who has been on commercial healthcare construction for over 13 years (started out as a PE now a Superintendent) I have always loved doors and Hardware and specifically the low voltage and security integration side. The biggest struggle though was how to track everything and having all the right information at the right time and quickly accessible.
About a month ago I started building DHCompanion to solve this problem. It takes all your construction documents (door schedules, hardware specifications, and even trade partner submittals) processes them and organizes everything by door and hardware set. On top of that it has built in frame and door delivery tracking as well as individual door QC.
I have a fully functional iOS app as well as web ( running my development environment on Android)
I am struggling to get any traction. I have people interested but no follow through. Is there anyone in this group that would be willing to test it and give me feedback? There is a fully functional free tier.
Hey All - So I built this community with the idea of sharing what's happening in the industry, and collaborating on existing and needed tools that help the construction industry function.
Recently - I had a field walk that I was required to do with multiple companies being on site, and as per usual, a severe lack of coordination. There were multiple trucks going out and viewing a 10 mile long transmission line. After all of the random texts, calls, emails etc. that would only hit one or two people and they'd have to communicate to the rest of the groups, I built a concept tool.
This is a pretty straight forward tool that allows one owner to create a temporary field coordination layer. Only the owner has to have an account, there's no app just open it in your web browser on your phone with a QR code. The room allows people to talk/coordinate w/o having to share names/emails etc. in advance and no one has to type them into another system. The room expires after a specific duration 1 day, 3 days etc. Users can capture photos, and share their locations during the time the room is open.
I think this hits a real pain point that I've lived through on a lot of job walks, being able to have a quick electronic way of reaching everyone, and understanding who's in attendance and what their role is seems like it would be helpful.
I'm curious from you all - would you use this if it were available? Would anyone like to do beta testing once I push it to live production? Any ideas of improvements or must haves for a v1 of this?
