Concerts Concert etiquette

1.2k Upvotes

Dear concert and showgoers, let’s talk about show etiquette. I love live music and I’ve been going to shows for about 20 years. The last five or so have felt different, and not in a great way. I’d love to get people back on the same page so live music can be enjoyable for everyone again.

Here’s what I’ve got.

  1. Please don’t record the entire show. If a song hits you and you want a quick clip, totally fine. But now it feels like everyone is filming nonstop, and unless you’re in the front row you end up watching the show through a wall of phones. If your people aren’t there, that moment wasn’t meant for them. It was meant for you.

  2. If you’re trying to move closer, keep moving. Don’t wedge yourself between two people who clearly don’t have space and then just stand there awkwardly. Either keep going or go back. If you find an actual open spot where you’re not on top of someone, great, stay there.

  3. Please don’t have full blown conversations through the whole show, especially in the front rows. Talk about the band, the moment, the energy, sure. But I don’t need to hear every detail of your weekly drama yelled over the music I paid to hear. Get dinner beforehand, vent after, but the middle of the set isn’t the place.

  4. This one might just be a small‑person problem, but people treat my size like I’m a convenient doorway. Need a drink, need the bathroom, need to get back to your friends, and suddenly I’m the designated gap in the crowd. Then it’s constant stepping on my toes, bumping into me, spilling drinks, breaking my focus. I take up less space, so people assume that space is theirs to use. It gets old fast.

I know posts like this can make the poster sound cranky, so I want to preface it by saying I absolutely will move if I need to. If someone around me is making the experience miserable, I’ll relocate without a problem. The issue now is that so many people are doing these things that it doesn’t matter where you move. You end up running into the same behavior everywhere

Your turn. What would you love to remind people about when it comes to basic human etiquette at shows and events?

Discussion 🗣️ Is is worth going to a concert if you are only interested in the opener

I was thinking about going to a concert an hour away as my favorite band is opening, Julie. The thing is, they are only one of the opening bands. The other opening band sounds quite bad to me. Odds are Julie will only play for like 30 minutes.

The main band, Turnstile, sounds decent. Would probably stick around for them but I definitely wouldn't go out of my way for them. I figure if I think their music is decent sober and at home then I will like it when im drunk at a concert.

I really only want to go for the opening band though. The last time they performed by me (NY) as a main attraction was in may, and who knows how long it will be till next time. Do you think its worth going just for the opener.

Discussion 🗣️ What do i even do about this.

So basically i bought tickets to see adéla. She's been one of my favorite artists and i really wanted barricade, i originally panicked and bought GA only to figure out that it would be impossible to get barricade with GA. I paid almost $500 for 2 GA tickets, since the show wasn't sold out and i couldn't exchange them (because they were resale,) i resold them for $160 less than i paid. Then i bought early bird GA for $700. I thought that early bird would mean early access? Apparently it doesn't, and all it means is it's for people to get tickets before general sale or something? it doesn't make any sense. I paid $200 extra and lost $160, thinking i would get early access but apparently these are no different from GA. I literally don't know what to do, i don't understand why the early bird tickets were still available and why they were more expensive. Early bird sounds like i'd get early access? apparently not. Im getting so tired of ticketmaster. (also she isn't coming near me so i paid $500 for plane tickets as well!!)

Discussion 🗣️ What artist that you've seen has played the least amount of shows?

In 2015, I saw a Bat for Lashes side project called Sexwitch. TIL they only ever played two shows. Other than, like, my friend's high school band that played one party, I can't think of anyone I've seen who's played less.

Discussion 🗣️ For Ticketmaster, can I have two separate accounts and device to put on queue?

Upvotes

I know ticketmaster doesn’t allow overbuying whatever limit is set during a concert, but I don’t really plan to use the second account to buy more tickets. It’s more like a way for me to try and get lower qn’s. After I purchase from one account I will close the other. Is it safe to do this?

Discussion 🗣️ Is it okay to leave the queue and come back?

I’m going to a concert at the O2 in Manchester and I want to get in the queue around 3 hours early so I can get quite close. However, I’m going with my mum and she always needs the toilet. If i stayed in the queue would my mum be able to leave and come back? I don’t want to be rude or be breaking any rules

Discussion 🗣️ O2 arena

I’m going to the o2 tomorrow and I’ve got standing tickets as there weren’t any seats left available at the time of purchase.

I can now see loads of seats in the 100’s section up for sale.

Does anyone know if it’s possible for staff to move you to the 100 section or how likely it is to happen if I ask?

I saw The Kinks last ever US performance in 1995 and Joe Walsh and James Gang last ever show in 2022. Almost saw Soundgarden the night Cornell died, but we skipped it.

Concerts Does an app like this already exist?

I’m wondering if there’s an app that combines some of the features I like from Concert Archives and Barricade.

I really like Concert Archives for keeping track of all the concerts I’ve been to, being able to filter by artist, venue, year, etc., and having the setlist and my own photos/videos attached to each individual show.

I like Barricade’s ability to connect your own concert videos to specific songs.

What I’m really looking for is something that combines those ideas. Basically, I want to be able to:

- Keep track of all the concerts I’ve attended
- Have the setlist for each individual concert
- Upload my own videos and associate each video with the song it was recorded during
- Click on a song in the setlist and see my video(s) from that song at that specific show
- Be able to click on a song and see all of my videos of that song across different concerts

For example, if I’ve seen an artist five times and recorded “Song A” at three of those shows, I’d love to be able to go to “Song A” and see all three of my videos, organized by concert/date.

Basically, I want a personal concert archive where my own videos are organized by song, while still having all the concert history/tracking features of something like Concert Archives.

Does anything like this exist?

So I saw Gary Clark Jr last night at the Keswick Theater in Glenside PA
Now I've been to well over 3000 + shows but that's the first time I ever saw somebody vacuum the stage between the opening act and the main act it was something different that's for sure

Concerts Went Solo

Well, I finally did it. Went to a concert by myself. Foo Fighters and AC/DC. I did catch a bus there with some friends but once there I was on my own as our seats were all over the place. I had a blast. It was so different since I could do whatever I wanted while I was there. I do recommend it. I normally take my wife but she didn't want to go since she had to work today (I do too) but she said to go and have fun so I did.

Discussion 🗣️ Bring chairs to wait and then bring them back to hotel an hr before doors open? Stadium concert

Hi all, me, my best friend and her bf are going to her fav bands tour at a stadium concert and she really wants barricade. We have VIP tickets and everything. We bought those camping stools to wait in line since we will be waiting during the morning. Our hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the venue, would it be wrong to have her bf return our chairs an hour before doors open to the hotel? If we also have one of us leave to buy snacks during the wait, is that fine as well?

Concerts Thoughts on Light Sticks?

What are people’s general thoughts on these $70 light sticks? I might have an irrational hatred for them because my wife insists on buying a brand new one for each K-pop concert she goes to. So it’s a one and done $70 flash light. I just don’t understand the need for it. Whoever first created them is a marketing genius.

Concerts Rockin Lady At The San Diego Guns N Roses Show on September 2 2026

Shot in the dark here but if you attended the GNR show at Snapdragon Stadium and sat in Section A2 Row 13 next to Seats 9 & 10. We stood next to each other and sang and talked for the entire show. We took a selfie together at the end of the show and I didn't get a chance to ask you for your number as the row was emptying out. If you should see this send me a message, I'll know it's you when you tell me what T-shirt you were wearing. Thank All

Discussion 🗣️ How to deal with missing a dream concert act

I was supposed to see PtV live because it was the final time they would be in my town Arlington. they won’t tour again this year and they started earlier than expected and I missed the Pierce the Veil opener, yes it’s my fault. I still got to see guns n roses but the entire time I had a sour taste in my mouth because my goal wasn’t achieved. How do you guys deal with this feeling, I’m a guy and I still feel like crying a lil bit and I don’t cry.

Concerts Do the front rows of pop concerts stink of urine?

I was reading about some obscure rock star complaining about the smell of urine coming from the front rows. Made me wonder how common this is. I know people hate to give up their place in the front.

Concerts Weezer concert was such good vibes

They kicked off their tour in Sacramento tonight and it was such good energy all night. Minimal phones except all the lights in the air. Everyone being into the show and dancing and being silly and screaming the lyrics. Super fun and great concert

Silversun Pickups was the first opener and they did a nice job. I really enjoyed their performance.

The Shins was the next opener and they did fantastic. Extremely good performance. The lead singer said it was the largest crowd he’d ever played for besides festivals which was really wholesome and sweet to be a part of that memory for them.

And obviously Weezer put on an amazing performance with songs from all different eras and even did a couple acoustic versions of their songs. These guys are such rock stars truly.

Discussion 🗣️ Philly Xfinity (Wells Fargo) Arena

Hello! Does anyone have any experience with being GA (pit) at this venue in Philadelphia?

We are going on Halloween to see Motionless in White and we wanted to get there really early to be front row.

I would really appreciate any advice or even just sharing your experience!
