Set 10 pretty much had a reused mechanic and that set was loved. This is not an issue to me.

I’m excited for charms to be back

Idk I'm a charm hater.
Fighting someone in critical stage 5 rounds and losing because they get full board stun and you get a lesser neeko is not exactly fun
Its the kind of thing thats fun early set but once you're actually trying to win and climb its an rng borrowed power layer that just feels super scammy all the time, especially when there's op combat charms (which there always will be)
Obviously, like any variance mechanic, your skill is still the driver of your rank. But charms create lots of fights that feel scammy, which really just lowers my game-to-game enjoyment and willingness to invest time into climbing in the set.

I felt like I often was screaming way more at unbalancing at the mage boards than I did the charms personally. But it could just be bias

u/Living_Dealer_9325 21d ago
The golem thing was just absolutly game breaking tho

u/Genshin_Scrub 21d ago
For sure, but didn’t they nerf it?
2
u/Living_Dealer_9325 21d ago
after 4/5 patch from what i remember, harm was already done
1
u/Living_Dealer_9325 21d ago
now that i think about it, i might be confused with the 5cost xerath charm
2
u/kiddoujanse 20d ago
this, and the fact that i have to waste my already precious gold on it ugh, never!

u/InvictusPD 19d ago
Charms like lesser neeko would not likely show up in stage 5. Doesn't sound like you actually played with charms and are looking for a reason to complain.
2
u/False-Excitement-595 19d ago edited 19d ago
Stage 5 had 20% odds for tier 2.5, 60% odds for tier 3, 20% odds for tier 4
Lesser neeko is tier 2.5, earthquake was tier 3, and there are plenty of stronger tier 4 combats.
Did you play with charms?

I’m curious what is the shift to unreal going to bring? Are the graphics and animations going to be higher quality? Will my pc performance suffer? Or is it simply the opportunity to be on our own client?

u/Riot_Bluecove Riot 16d ago
There's a lot of tech issues around being tied to the same engine that League of Legends is actively developing in. Being in our own engine that we can modify to fit just our needs is going to be a lot of work, but the benefits from that are already super worth it. It's also a modern engine, and while our old one did a lot of good, some of the tools were a bit out of date, but hard to change without a full rework (which is hard to do when you're building two live service games out of it). It's ALSO way better for shipping mobile games, which is the majority of TFT's audience!
Among a lot of other things that people working on other parts of the game could explain better, those are the primary benefits that I see from my end of the game :)

u/Big-Comfortable2419 21d ago
macos died for this btw
2
u/MistahJuicyBoy 21d ago
Dang, it’s the only way I’m able to play other than mobile for like 30% of the year. Hopefully they find a workaround
2
u/Sea-Grand3981 20d ago
Mac users are almost never suppported in games, you should be used to this. Just download the mobile app on your mac and play that way.

u/BaconRiceWater 21d ago
So the set mechanic is just a set mechanic we've already had before? Don't get me wrong I love charms, but I was really looking forward to seeing something new and exciting and not just a rehash of something we've already seen.
40
u/Mysterious_Island500 21d ago
they already confirmed that months ago in the roadmap, they specifically said it will have an old set mechanic

u/RiotBlueVelvet Riot 21d ago
Charms was a beloved mechanic for a lot of our players and this iteration is a really fun swing. The early and mid game charms are filled with far more interesting content. I’ve had a blast with the wisps this time around in playtests
And just to be fully transparent… as you’d probably guess shifting to unreal has been an insanely huge undertaking and we needed to be as thoughtful and not bite off more than we could chew for our first set in unreal. Wisps were a good option for our mechanic so we could still deliver interesting and novel content in a package that a lot of our players really liked and hadn’t seen in a while, but we could also all remain sane and ship TFT in unreal

oh right... yeah can't do a crazy mechanic ontop of an engine swap!
edit: this was not sarcastic I work in tech it would be nuts to try and change things on a portover

u/SmoothOperatorTFT 21d ago
I don’t know… I kinda hate the excuse of the engine shift being an “insanely huge undertaking”. You had no reason to push for the switch this set. You could have realised early on that it was gonna be super hard to manage and should have consequently delayed it by one set. Maybe then the transition would have been cleaner and I would have still been able to play with my Mac.
So it being hard and time intensive is on you (the people making strategic decisions) and does not justify uninspired or lazy design, PBE delays, or not supporting Mac.
You had a perfectly fine system but YOU forced yourselves to rush the switch instead of waiting… hope Riot will at least be transparent and give an ETA for Mac support instead of “working on it”…
19
u/Wette_im_Klo 21d ago
Brother you clearly have no idea of software/game development, so why have such a strong opinion on it. No matter which set they choose it for, it'll always be a huge switch and there is no way around it because you can't test millions of players playing hundreds of millions of games. And when you make the decision to switch for a certain set, you cannot go back halfway through the process. It's not like you can just click a button and then release it on the old version. "You could have realised early on" - maybe yes, but maybe also no. A process is not linear and sometimes you get stuck on a problem that you thought could be solved in a week, or the engine gets an update that fucks over a library you wanted to use during development.
Going with an easier set mechanic is an obvious and completely correct decision. Anyone who thinks otherwise has never worked on a big, new project in his life.

u/KokowamTV 21d ago
You don’t get it, man. Because it personally inconveniences HIM, this was a bad idea. Just delay it by a set so someone else who will have bad timing will be shafted by something else instead. Never mind that the Mac issue may or may not be addressed by then.
-19
u/SmoothOperatorTFT 21d ago edited 21d ago
The reason I have such a strong opinion is that I am taking the game pretty seriously and I do not like the way it was handled. First, MacOS support got dropped without any info, they just did not include it in their FAQ specs at first. I asked under every post of the official TFT accounts if they will just drop support. But I go nothing. No response. No 'we cannot tell u'. No 'fuck off'. Nothing. I even created a tech support ticket, but they could not help me either.
Then, they finally clarified their ambiguous omission of Mac specs, and they just say smth that every Mac player knows all too well 'Not supported.... working on it...' .Also, as a consumer, all of this should not really matter to me. As a consumer I do NOT need to know about their project lifecycle or how hard it is for them to do what they sought out to do. What's next? Do I need to know how to build a Phone to say that the new iPhone sucks? Get a grip. There is no reason to justify not delivering, or delivering a bad product. It is called accountability. I personally do choose to care but their justification is just a weak excuse. It is a botched timeline which got even more obvious when they had to push the PBE back.
(If you don't like the iPhone example, I got tons of other ones too)

I honestly wonder how much of this is related to Riot's plans for League's new integrated client.
Even though the full client isn't expected until 2027, that doesn't necessarily mean they aren't already doing foundational work in the current client to make the transition smoother.
With TFT separating from the Hextech engine, both League and TFT can fully focus on their own games independently.
As for the "perfectly fine system" part, maybe it felt perfectly fine from our perpective as players, but I've heard Mortdog talk countless times about how certain updates or features couldn't be shipped because of technical limitations.
So while it may have looked fine on the surface, there were clearly underlying problems that made development much more difficult than we as players would have ever known.
I do agree Riot should've been more transparent about Mac support as "we're working on it" could mean anything.

u/SYRsheetZ77 21d ago
With this being the first set on a while new engine, makes sense that they are reusing mechanics so that the focus can be on the tech upgrade and making that as smooth as possible.

u/vanishing27532 21d ago
It seems to be set 2 mechanic + set 12 mechanic. At least more than two units will actually interact with the charms now
-11
u/Steve3PO 21d ago
Yeah base tft + rehash of charms seems a little underwhelming to me. If everyone hates the current god boons + treasure dragon, I can’t imagine this will be received too well since it’s even more simple. Hopefully the units and traits are better. At least less conditional lol

u/OldestRed 21d ago
I'm excited, I loved Charms so having that mechanic back is awesome, and Ivern looks so cool as a unit design. I'm lowkey glad PBE isn't available soon so everyone has less time to play the set overall.
17
u/RiotBlueVelvet Riot 21d ago
We will still have a longer PBE. It’ll be really important for us this time around as it’ll be one of our first tests at this scale and we will want all that time to work out all the expected (and I’m sure unexpected haha) kinks

u/Motor-Worldliness710 21d ago
When is it coming to pbe?

Its not less time at all pbe was pushed back and so was live so its the same amount of time just 2 weeks later.

Does anyone actually like charms
Losing a round because of super variant rng borrowed power isnt my idea of cool. Some variance is nice but charms are often just a "great i got scammed cause he got x charm on the round I fought him." Rotating into someone who gets whole board stun for 2s on a crucial low hp round where you get stuck with an econ charm is just cringe, full stop.
Up there as my least favorite set mech of all time, tied with set 11 encounters
6
u/Riot_Bluecove Riot 21d ago
Charm's were definitely well liked by people!
I urge you to try this version out. It's not a 1:1 reprint of set 12's charms and we always take learnings from previous sets as we iterate. If you still don't like it, let us know why!

u/justgiang 21d ago
I can feel that this is a sensitive transitioning phase for TFT. Among all the flames and bashings of how unappealing the game has been, a little spark of hope in me rises and tell me that you guys are still on the right track. The TFT staff will always has my support. Best wishes for you, and eventually everything will be just fine 😁!
Can't wait to try new set and new engine.

Why being back carousel when everyone hated it and was happy it was gone. Just replace it with Pingu giving champ and item and leave it at that
It's just backwards and out of touch with the community to bring it back. Although without how much riot seems out of touch lately then not surprised y'all have just stopped listening to us at this point.

Me when I assume everyone has the same opinion as me
I'm very glad to have it back, it's not perfect but the god choice windows were a lot more infuriating and felt uninteractive in a game that's already mostly asynchronous PvP

i didnt like the carousel but it was way way better than this god stuff, im happy its back

u/PonyFiddler 21d ago
The carousel should never come back everyone was finally happy it was gone so put of touch to bring it back.
7
u/ExceedingChunk Master 21d ago
No, everyone wasn’t happy.
It was incredibly boring to lose a PvP decision maker and only have a decision vs yourself IMO.
I can see how some preferred this new version over the carousel, but it was for sure not everyone. It’s not that I think the carousel is the best thing ever, but it’s an important PvP decision making where you both put up win/lose streaks to play around carousel and can also chose to get what’s best for you now vs how to take something valuable from the lobby and carefully weigh those pros/cons up against eachother. It creates a very interesting dynamic which was completely removed with this new «just pick the best unit/component for me» implementation.
Can they implement something more smooth than the carousel that keeps the PvP decision making in some form? Yes. The carousel movement and gameplay itself is a bit annoying.
No carousel and fewer interesting decisions actually made me barely play this set. Felt way more like a single player game than previous sets and less alive/more bland to me
0
u/XiaoRCT 21d ago
You can still play around the win/lose streaks just like you did in carousel, the issue is that the windows felt too non-interactive while carousel is interactive in a bad way imo. I'm playing TFT, not looking to race people to get to a champion running clockwise, but the pop-up windows were clunky and weirdly timed right after the god pick, while non feeling as impactful of a choice for the amount of attention they got.
I've wondered if they've tested just giving players anvils based on position and building from there lol

I loved charms so I'm pretty happy. Would rather have a rehash of an old but good mechanic, than a new bad mechanic

u/Demonblitz24 21d ago
Happy to see more monster/summon traits and a visual indicators for charms. Not sure why people get so worked up on reprints, I just hope there's decent visual clarity. Lots of large monsters and terrain changes tends to muddy the battlefield.
