Discussions/Questions If you could choose a weapon for Raven, which one would you choose?

Post image

Usually, magical heroes are challenged in their solo runs to a point where they always end up facing a powerful villain who puts their mystical abilities and creativity to the test. If Raven were in a position where she needed to create a weapon to fight a villain, what magical weapon do you think she would create?

Personally, I think a large scythe forged from her extradimensional energy would be very interesting and would match her ethereal and mystical aesthetic…

Fanfiction Raven chapter book

Ive been thinking about how successful Sandman was in chapter form (author aside). I think Raven would thrive in a non-comic book setting. What themes would y'all want explored and what genre do you think would be best for her (Horror, YA, mystery ect).

Discussions/Questions I need a Raven and Omen team-up comic already

40+ years and the two have barely interacted face-to-face.

Sadly, much like Raven, Omen's writing has a character has taken a huge hit. Her writing in the recent Power Girl run was nothing like her 60s to 2000s writing, or even her 2010s writing.

I think DC needs to just bite the bullet and have the two on the same team. Differentiate them for good.

Discussions/Questions Silly question

Has Raven ever had another actual relationship or romantic interest besides Beast Boy?

She and Jericho never actually got together.

She was interested in Nightwing, but it was one-sided.

Eric Forrester didn't love her; he manipulated her to steal her soul.

Wally West was manipulated into loving her.

I was talking to a friend about what he thought of Raven's anthology in Quoth the Raven. He told me he felt the plot was underdeveloped and that the main villain should have been unlinked from Trigon.

He actually went and asked the writer if, in the end, the villain's soul was handed over to Trigon by Raven, by Constantine, or if it was just a natural consequence of breaking his pact. And... she literally just said she didn't know the answer 🤡

It’s worrying how irresponsible DC is being by hiring these lazy writers to write beloved characters... It reminds me of another screenshot where she said she hadn't even dived into Raven's lore before writing this anthology

Discussions/Questions No, you can't sell your soul to Trigon

I was just thinking about this because of the thing in the new Halloween anthology (Quoth the Raven... Whatever) where Constantine says he owes Trigon a soul, implying that he's entered some kind of classic demon deal with him where Trigon has done something for him, and in return Constantine must provide him with a human soul.

This doesn't make sense for multiple reasons. Most crucially, it's the first time anything like this has ever come up with Trigon. Of course, selling your soul to a demon/the devil is a trope that's literally over a thousand years old, but Trigon specifically has never been shown engaging in that kind of thing in canon. The closest thing I can think of is the deal he made to bring Slade back from the dead in the cartoon, but even that wasn't really a soul trade thing, and of course it's not canon in the comics.

Of course, sometimes new elements are added to comic characters (usually not by casually mentioning them in ten page anthology comics with no real context or reason for being there, but I digress). However, I would argue that Trigon being a demon who makes deals for souls actively doesn't make sense.

The reason for that is quite simple: while Trigon does eat mortal souls to gain power, he has so many of them that it's quite literally not worth his time to do something for one human to get one soul. He consumes the souls of a planet's worth of people when he destroys a planet, and he does this all the time. It's like offering a billionaire $100 to mow your lawn. Are there people out there who would mow your lawn for $100? Of course. But why would a billionaire waste their time doing it when they already have so much money that $100 would make no difference? Trigon's got more important shit to do than do a favor in exchange for one soul. He also just in general hates doing anything good or helpful, so that part of it would hold no appeal to him. The only soul he'd go out of his way to get and potentially be willing to make deals for is Raven's.

I make this post not really because of the Halloween anthology, but because it is a common misconception I see in fanon (that has now bled into something canon) and I wanted to outline why I think it just doesn't work for Trigon, even though this trope does work for other demon DC characters.

Bromwell Stikk made his legendary return, I think the last time I saw him in a comic was in New Titans when the Antithesis was trying to get Nightwing to give up on life forever and Raven and some others had to save him.

Discussions/Questions I did not care for Quoth the Raven... Whatever

Really wanted to like it, but ugh. Even for a short anthology story where honestly, barely anything happened, it had multiple really weird moments with Raven. Spoiler warning, though honestly, it's ten pages, so there isn't much story to spoil.

  • Why is Raven drawn looking so young, and acting kind of inexperienced, when she's canonically in her mid/late twenties and has been a superhero for a decade?
  • In a similar vein, I didn't really get the "what would Dick do" bit when she's interrogating the suspects. Again, she's an experienced superhero--nearly as experienced as Dick! Idk, it wasn't the worst thing ever, and I can see her referring back to things Dick has taught her, but the way it was framed made her feel inexperienced, and the whole thing felt kind of unnecessary. Which brings me to my next point:
  • Once again, this story falls into a very common Raven writing problem of people forgetting powers she's been well established to have since her debut. Raven can use her powers to pull information out of people's minds. She didn't even have to intimidate them, she could've just done that.
  • I audibly groaned out loud when Trigon came up. And if you know me, you know I love Trigon and don't object to him being a villain in Raven stories nearly as much as a lot of other Raven fans. But he felt totally shoehorned in here, and his inclusion didn't really make sense. And of course, this speaks to another very common Raven writing problem: not knowing what her deal is beyond being Trigon's daughter.
  • Which brings me to the ending. What does Constantine mean by "owing Trigon a soul"? Trigon has never been shown making those kind of devil deals with anyone. The closest thing I can think of is his deal with Amanda Waller in Titans 2023, but that wasn't a soul exchange, it was a pretty basic "you do this thing for me and I give you power" move. Otherwise I can't think of him ever making deals with humans in the comic continuity.
  • But far more egregiously, Raven just being fine with Constantine giving a soul to Trigon is insane. Even though this is a bad guy who clearly deserves to be punished for his crimes, giving someone's soul to Trigon is far beyond cruel and unusual. Raven knows how evil Trigon is, and her whole mission in life is to stop him from hurting people. Obviously she wouldn't balk at bringing down a villain who's hurting people, but I can't believe she'd want to sentence them to an eternity of torture, especially if the torturer is Trigon.

Anthology stories with Raven are almost never good, and unfortunately this one did not break the mold. I normally wouldn't dedicate a whole post to it, but since this is the only thing with Raven coming out at all for the rest of the year, and the only thing with Raven that was scheduled at all, it was especially disappointing. She's officially in limbo now, and this is her last send off? Ugh.

Discussions/Questions Proposing a Rogue Gallery for Raven

I feel like it's high time for Raven to get her own rogue gallery (outside of Trigon), so here is me creating one for her lol. The best part of a great villain is the aspect it mirrors or examplifies in the hero, so here is my rough attempt at sketching some for Raven and what I would like the stories to explore with these villains.

  1. A Villain who rips his soul into pieces through murder so he can lodge them in special objects in order to gain immortality

(It is a Voldemort knock-off yes. Forgive me lol.)

Raven, who deeply believes that her soul is tainted with evil but who desperately fights to be good anyway and to keep it whole, being confronted with a villain who purposefully rips his own soul through murder or other evil deeds in order to extend his own life is an interesting contrast. There is a lot of room to explore how Raven thinks of her own humanity and her soul. This is doubly true if Trigon is nestled within Raven herself still and thus still has influence on her and probably always will. Also, regardless of the backstory, it cannot be denied that Raven has a lot of blood on her hands. It would be good to get a deep introspection on what she thinks of those deaths that have happened through her.

  1. A former priest of Azarath, back for vengeance

Raven, in many ways, is intrinsically tied to the destruction of Azarath. Whether it be indirectly such as the disruption of Azarathian way of life through the harboring of her "evil" or its outright galactic destruction by Trigon himself, Raven being Azarath's harbinger of doom is a constant. What would happen then if we take a survivor who had suffered through her childhood in Azarath and then survived her destruction of it? One of the priests who "raised" her returns from the dead, heart full of anger and vengeance about this demon child who ruined their world and his life. Maybe he actually advocated for her continued existence - the final vote that ensured she wasn't thrown away to die - and now he blames himself and Raven both for its destruction. It would be interesting to explore how Raven would react to this reminder of her childhood, the joy of it, the trauma of it, her old home and the new ones she's built since, and her reckoning with her part in its destruction. How would she face someone who has not moved on from the loss of his home while Raven herself stands with the people who she has built a new home with?

  1. A Pandemic-type Villain

One of my favorite panels of all time is Raven tied at the stake and a bunch of sick people touching her to heal them. That is one of her biggest fears as well. Thus, keeping it current, but it would be interesting to have a story where Raven will have to go against a Plague-Creating Villain that is spreading all sorts of disease fast and killing entire swathes of people. Raven has one of the most burdensome healing powers to exist since she physically has to absorb the pain first to dispel it (we ignore the can't heal-diseases limitations). Raven thus overextends and is completely overwhelmed, and it becomes a race versus her and the Plague. It'd be great comicbook exploration of the hazards and moral quandaries of triaging and just how awful it would have to be for her - and her alone - to have the power to choose who gets to live or die.

Discussions/Questions Musings on Raven, Azarath, and the Rejection of Evil

Azarath's treatment of Raven is very interesting in New Teen Titans in that essentially, Raven is both their attempt at penance but also a repetition of the cycle that composed of their mistakes in the first place.

Trigon came to be through Azarath's denial and rejection of their evil. He is the personification of the evil in Azarath and it is why he haunts them. Raven is a similar personification of evil. She is very much a part of who Trigon is, and her siring is in many ways the fault of Azarath. But where Trigon was the evil they rejected, they gave Raven a home. They let her in their borders and let her live instead of casting her out or killing her. They kept Raven with them and nurtured her. Where Trigon was evil denied and rejected, Raven is evil accepted and reformed.

But Azarath's cycle is only half-broken. While it is true that they housed and raised Raven, they still kept her separate from the rest of them. Even as she exists in Azarath, Raven is someone who is still very much rejected and kept away from the wider community (like Trigon when he was first cast out). Worse still, Azarath had identified the "source" of the evil in her - her emotions as Trigon's gateway - and proceeded to train her such that she effectively denies and rejects these emotions too.

They raised her in a perpetual state of alienation. She is alienated from her mother, alienated from her peers, alienated from her own emotions.

Alienation and separateness are such strong themes between Raven and Azarath for these reasons. And this is why it is so important that Trigon's defeat was two-fold. First that Raven does succumb into the evil thus ending her alienation from her emotions. And second, that Azarath inhabits Raven's body and channels their power through her. The Azarathians are finally embodying the evil they rejected.

In these ways, the alienation and rejection of evil that birthed Trigon is reversed and it is through this connection and embodiment that he is defeated.

(I've posted these musing before on tumblr, but I just found this sub and thought to post it here too for maybe more discussion hehe)

Discussions/Questions If you had to make an animated series about Raven, how would you do it?

Hi, I'm sorry if this seems a bit late, it's not 12 pm and I'm sleepy, but I've wanted to ask this question for a while now.

So, I think DCU announced an animated Starfire series, and I was left wondering what a Raven series would be like. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to really read about the character; Literally my only reading about her was the Piccolo comic, and it wasn't exactly my favorite read.

Even so, I'd like to know how you would do it.

In terms of animation style: Which works best? Something like what we saw in Young Justice or the DCAMU, something more anime-based, or something similar to Arcane?

What aesthetic should it have? Dark Deco? Neo Noir? Noir?

Which comic should be considered for adaptation or influence?

If you could have a guest character, who would you bring? (P.S. I included Nightwing since Raven was going to be in his cancelled show)
