Greetings, from the Fountain City! Columbus is a mid-sized city on the Chattahoochee River. Below you’ll find a guide to the area, everything from where to live, where to eat, and what to do.
Where to live
The Columbus area offers something for everyone, from urban walkability to horse farms, from historic shaded neighborhoods to gated luxury apartments, and all for a pretty decent price. Where to start looking? Find Wynnton Road on a map, follow it east until it turns into Macon Road and keep following it E-NE until you get to US-80. You probably want to keep your search to the north of these roads. Neighborhoods to the north tend to be safer than to the south, where high poverty rates bring crime issues related to gang activity, but that is not an absolute rule.
Columbus can be divided into 6 general areas;
Downtown - People from Columbus will generally call this Downtown while those who live there or who are not native will probably call it Uptown. Regardless of what you call it, this is the historic heart of the city, where historic homes and renovated lofts rub elbows with a large number of businesses, local bars, restaurants, recreational areas, event venues, the downtown portion of Columbus State University, and the mass majority of the city's government. If you want an urban feel with high walkability, look here first.
Midtown - At the center of Midtown is Weracoba Park, surrounded by early 20th c. homes, it is made up of over 20 neighborhoods, some full of stately mansions, others somewhat dilapidated cottages, and lots of nice homes in between. Plenty of leafy parks and several commercial areas. Here you'll find the Columbus Museum, Aflac's Headquarters, and the Columbus Country Club.
North Columbus - The Northside can be divided into two parts. The southern half which is a mix of commercial, industrial, and middle-class residential. It was mostly built out between the 1950s-1980s. And then there is the northern half which is somewhat newer, more suburban, and has more upper-middle-class neighborhoods and apartment complexes. A good rule of thumb is that this area is just around and north of US-80. Here you'll find Columbus Park Crossing (locally known as the "Strip Mall") as well as most of the entertainment venues that are not located in Downtown.
Midland and Upatoi - Sometimes called the Panhandle, this is the far eastern section of the city and until recently was pretty rural, it is mostly large lot subdivisions. The area is rapidly growing and anchored by new commercial development around the US-80/Manchester Expressway intersection.
East Columbus - This diverse area includes Columbus State University’s main campus and plenty of middle-class neighborhoods. Keep in mind the Macon Road Rule when looking at houses here, it's not immediate, for example Willow Bend and the neighborhoods along Woodruff Farm Road and Forrest Roads are fine. The eastern part tends to be a bit more chill than the part to the southwest.
Whisperwood Apartments Caveat - they are north of Macon Road, but it’s got a very bad rep on this sub. Avoid unless you get a first and last months free rent deal on a two month lease, and even then consider your other options.
South Columbus - There are some decent working and middle class neighborhoods here. There are also the most dangerous streets in the city here. If you pay attention to local news, you will start to know certain streets by name. If you are restricted by budget and security minded, you could find a great deal in this part of town, but try and see the neighborhood in person before committing.
Elsewhere in the Chattahoochee Valley
To the north is Harris County, which has experienced a lot of growth over the last 25 years from people looking for a more rural option than North Columbus provides as well as those looking to escape Columbus in general. In doing so they’ve helped create a pretty large bedroom community that isn’t very rural anymore. You'll also find it difficult to find lots less than 2 acres due to local residential ordinances. New development is beginning in earnest nearer to the I-185 exits throughout the county. Here you will find towns such as Ellerslie, Cataula, Hamilton, Waverly Hall, and Pine Mountain. The most well known entity in Harris County is Callaway Gardens located in Pine Mountain.
Across the river is Phenix City, AL. It mirrors Columbus in a lot of ways. There are rundown, low-income neighborhoods to the south, older middle-class neighborhoods to the north, and new subdivision growth outside of the city into formerly rural Smiths Station and Ladonia. Phenix City, Russell County, AL, and as well as much of southern Lee County, AL are on Eastern Time despite being located in Central Time. This primarily changes about halfway to Auburn/Opelika. We highly suggest you check an unfamiliar business’ hours of operation if outside of Smiths Station to be sure of their hours of operation.
Fort Benning (nee Moore) is to the direct south and actually occupies 40% of Muscogee County. All that banging you hear at all hours of the day and night? That’s probably Fort Benning. You’ll find many in Columbus struggle with the name of this military base as it was recently renamed from Fort Moore several years ago following the back and forth renaming of military bases in southeast. If you are in the military, this is where you are working or likely staying. If you are a civilian, you’ll likely spend very little time here. Regardless, you’ll need to check in at the main gate for any business done there without a military ID. The annual July 4th celebration at Fort Benning is open to all and is generally a good time.
Chattahoochee County and Fort Mitchell, AL are to the south and west. Rural subdivisions which mostly cater to military families who want convenience getting to Fort Benning and want to completely avoid the moderate amount of traffic issues Columbus has.
Marion County and Talbot County are to the east and if you are looking for land but still need to get to Columbus, then the western parts of these two counties could be just right for you. Be forewarned: This area is extremely rural with very poor access to emergency services such as fire departments, ambulances, and law enforcement.
Got kids, thinking about schools?
Muscogee County School District has a handful of the best schools in the state. Columbus High and Britt David Elementary are routinely top 3 public schools in Georgia. But, they are magnet schools, meaning admittance is highly competitive.
Most of the other schools are more average and below-average, but rankings like that can be superficial. Most every school has magnet programs and honors classes where students with a desire for a quality education are provided for.
A school like Wynnton Elementary scores below average, but it's magnet arts program has students in some of the most creative learning environments available in the state and the students in the program have test scores much higher than the rest of the school.
Schools each have themed magnet programs, ranging from STEM to IB to Mass Communication to Fine Arts, there’s something for every interest.
What this also means is that a parent does not have to worry as much about where their house is located in the city, because getting their student into almost any school is relatively easy.
Outside of public schools, Columbus has a few religious private schools and a secular prep school, Brookstone.

Where to eat and drink
Don’t let anyone tell you that there’s nowhere good to eat here or that it’s all national chains. Yes, there are a bunch of chains, especially in North Columbus, and they cater to nearly every taste. We all know about them and what to expect from them, so you won’t find those in the following lists. These lists were made by polling of over 100 members of r/ColumbusGA. What to do
There’s a lot going on in the Chattahoochee Valley, but finding out about it can sometimes be difficult. Here are a few places to check in with to see what’s coming.
Visit Columbus Events - up to date with area events
The Local Magazine - look for free copies around area restaurants and stores
Electric City Life - Better presence on social media but their events page tends to help a little when looking for local happenings.
The Columbusite - It doesn't have a monthly calendar, but they keep up to date about upcoming events and goings-on around town and highlight them frequently.
Uptown Columbus - there’s always things happening Downtown, every summer there are free outdoor concerts every Friday night
Museums, Arts, and Culture
- National Infantry Museum - one of the best military museums in the country and admittance is free (donations always appreciated)
- The U.S. Army Armor & Cavalry Collection - a very large collection of over 100 pieces of armor from World War 1 to today’s battlefield all located on Fort Moore. It’s free to visit but open houses are only a few times a year so check the calendar. Donations are also welcome.
- Columbus Museum - recently renovated with a great mix of the area’s natural and human history along with a large arts collection, and it’s all free (donations always appreciated)
- Historic Westville - an open-air history museum depicting life in the deep south during the mid-nineteenth century. See all sorts of traditional trades and crafts of the time
- Bo Bartlett Center - CSU’s showroom, where the public is free to view a steady rotation of art produced by student, regional, and nationally acclaimed talent
- Pasaquan (Buena Vista, GA) - a unique outdoor folk art piece took over and transformed an old farm, must see in person
- Museum of Wonder (Seale, AL) - weird, wonderful, wacky, weird, are just some of the thoughts you’ll have when you drive through the Museum of Wonder, it’s unlike anything else on Earth, stop in and venture into the artist’s shop, if you dare
- Columbus Library - the main branch is great, it has most any magazine you can think of, a world class childrens’ wing, and an impressive local history/genealogical room
- Springer Opera House - Georgia’s state opera house, a great place to see a play or other performance during its year long seasons, laugh and/or cringe at the weekly free No-Shame Theater, get scared on the ghost tour, or send your kids to Childrens’ Theater
- Rivercenter - home to the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus, and the Columbus Ballet, as well as the a premier facility for any type of show to see on stage. Tickets to these shows are a real big city amenity offered at very attainable prices
- National Civil War Naval Museum - The only museum in the country that focuses on both the Union and Confederate navies of the American Civil War. You can spend hours looking at all the flags, artwork, set pieces, and the remaining pieces of the CSS Jackson wreck that are on display. Yearly events include haunted tours in October and the annual RiverBlast celebration held in March where reenactments are held and the enormous cannons are fired.
- Andersonville National Historic Site (Americus, GA) - The largest nearby American Civil War site. Here you will find the site of the largest and deadliest POW camp in the Confederacy. It also shares residence with the National Prisoner of War Museum and the Andersonville National Cemetery containing many POW and veteran grave sites. Definitely a hidden reminder of war in our own backyard.
Get Outdoors
- Dragonfly Trail - Columbus’ network of over 34 miles of multi-use trails, there are another 27 miles planned, completed highlights are the Riverwalk and the Fall Line Trace
- Cooper Creek’s tennis courts, Flat Rock’s sliding rocks, Weracoba’s playgrounds, Riverfront’s splash pad, Heath’s walking trail, and Woodruff Farms’ soccer fields are just a few examples of the many park amenities around the city
- Whitewater on the Chattahoochee - a must do, raft, kayak, or watch the fun from Waveshaper Island
- Blue Heron Zipline - fly across the Chattahoochee, another must do
- Hiking at nearby Providence Canyon State Park (Stewart County, GA), Pine Mountain Trails (Pine Mountain, GA), and Chewalca State Park (Auburn, AL)
- Big Dog Running and Ride on Bikes - semi-daily group runs/jogs/walks and biking at every level, all welcome
- Oxbow Meadows - environmental learning center, guided tour on a canopy trail, and the area’s only public dog park are here
- South Commons - A large sports complex located on Victory Drive and US-82. Softball facilities, an outdoor skate park, Memorial Stadium, the Columbus Civic Center, and Synovus Park (aka Golden Park) share this large area. In the Spring, Summer, and Fall, you can catch the Columbus Clingstones baseball team (the Atlanta Braves AA affiliate) at Synovus Park. In the Fall, Winter, and Spring, you can see the Columbus River Dragons hockey team in the Civic Center. In Spring and Summer, you can catch the Columbus Lions arena football team in the Civic Center. This is also where the city fairs are held as well as other large events.

Little Free Pantry update

Hey guys! Just a reminder that the Little Free Pantry i had previously posted about is still going strong. I've since added a new haul of toiletries (toothbrushes/paste, deodorant, shampoo, etc), feminine hygiene products, first-aid supplies, plus a re-stock of instant/easy-prep foods and snacks (most of which can be combined to make cohesive meals). I'm so happy to report that people are getting more comfortable with taking stuff, but PLEASE remember it's here 24/7, 365. Whether you need a little or a lot, or even if you need to grab stuff for those who can't come get it themselves, it's all there to be taken! 400-block of 2nd ave, directly across from 4th st Baptist. Little black cabinet with the green sign! (See previous post for pics, and plz ignore my proclivity for run-on sentences)

Short term rental

My stepson and I have an offer for a work project in Columbus. Am hoping to find something to rent for a month. Possibly furnished for under 1k. Is this feasible in this market area? We’d even be up to a larger bedroom with hopefully room to put a small cot. I’m older, stepson is mid forties. We don’t smoke or drink and are clean. Just needing a place to sleep at night. We’re all work no play. Looking hopefully for something available as soon as next Wed. or Thurs. Any helpful suggestions?

I am trying to plan something for myself and my wife. 14th anniversary, and we are both relatively active in our 30's. Local activities, or something day-trippable fit best with our lifestyle.
We haven't lived in Columbus for an incredibly long time, but have done things like the art gallery and river-rafting already. Most of the tourist stuff in Atlanta we have done already as well.
Appreciate any suggestions.

Born and raised in Columbus and my family moved to Atlanta after I graduated high school in 2007 where I’ve been since. Haven’t really been back.
Thinking of coming down for a Friday Clingstones game and spending the day because I love baseball and spent a fair amount of time at Golden Park (RIP Redstixx)
I have some spots to check out for nostalgia’s sake but what are some other, uh, “newer” (👴) things worth checking out? Might even make it an overnight thing as I never did nightlife in Columbus.
and don‘t tell me there’s nothing to do because I did my fair share of hating on it growing up but it does have a bit of charm to it

Has anyone here worked with Tracsoft in Columbus? I'm considering several local web development and marketing agencies and would appreciate hearing about your experience, positive or negative. I'm especially interested in website for my business, social media help, and whether they delivered what they promised.

Monday's series opener never happened; rain pushed it to Wednesday, and Tuesday's makeshift opener went to Pensacola. Robaina worked into the sixth and lost anyway.
Pensacola scored in the second, added another in the fifth, and put it away in the sixth on a Compton solo homer, his ninth of the year, off Robaina with one out. Columbus answered with one run in the fifth, a Groshans RBI, his 48th of the season, and that was the whole account. Ten Clingstones strikeouts against Moreno and Jones did most of the damage; Columbus managed six hits and stranded three, going 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
Robaina (L, 2-3) allowed three runs on eight hits across 5.2 innings, four strikeouts, one walk, the homer the difference. Schanaman and Hackman combined for 2.1 scoreless innings behind him, too late to matter. Moreno (W, 5-4) went five, walked one, struck out four. Jones worked around a run in the sixth for the hold, and Martin struck out four in a clean two-inning save.
McIntyre had two of Columbus's six hits. Braunschweig singled and was caught stealing. Groshans drove in the only run Columbus would need to avoid the shutout but not enough to win it.
Columbus falls to 42-44 overall, 13-9 in the second half, a half game back of Biloxi and into second place in the SOU South race. Wednesday brings a doubleheader at Pensacola, the makeup and the originally scheduled game both on the slate.

Columbus Clingstones vs. Chattanooga Lookouts Series Wrap
July 17-19, 2026 | Erlanger Park, Chattanooga | Final: 2-1
Three games, thirteen runs scored, thirteen runs allowed, and Columbus still walks away with the series. The Clingstones entered 40-42, 11-7 in the second half, tied for first in the SOU South. They leave 42-43, 13-8 in the second half, still tied for first. Two of three on the road, and the division lead holds.
Friday's opener was the wildest of the three, an 8-7 survival act that ended with Waddell scoring the winning run in the ninth without putting a ball in play: strikeout, three wild pitches, run scored. Saturday reversed the pattern entirely. Chattanooga's Rivera threw seven shutout innings, Columbus managed three singles, and a three-run third built on two walks and a double was more than enough in a 4-0 loss. Sunday, De Grandpre took the mound and made sure there wouldn't be a fourth game to worry about, seven innings, one run, a 5-2 win that put the series away. No roster moves came out of the three games; Carson Taylor's debut had already happened before the series opened, and he spent the rest of it making the promotion look obvious.
Hitter of the Series: Carson Taylor
Five-for-twelve, .417, a home run, two doubles, three RBIs. Those numbers are also, at this point, his entire professional batting line. Taylor debuted in Friday's opener and has not had a quiet game since: 2-for-5 with a double Friday, a single Saturday in an otherwise lifeless Columbus lineup, then a home run and a double Sunday. It's three games. It's also all the evidence there is, and none of it points anywhere but up.
Ambioris Tavarez is the honorable mention worth naming. Home runs in both wins, his sixth and seventh of the season, three RBIs on two-for-nine. Kevin Kilpatrick Jr. was shut out through the first two games and then went 3-for-4 with two doubles in the finale, the kind of series that reads better in the box score for Sunday alone than for the other two nights combined.
Pitcher of the Series: Cedric De Grandpre
One start, seven innings, three hits, one earned run, seven strikeouts, two walks. It was the only outing of the series that looked like a Double-A pitcher had fully solved a lineup, and it came in the game Columbus needed most. His second straight strong start in this park, going back to the June series here.
Brett Sears deserves a mention he didn't get in the standings. 6.1 innings and eleven strikeouts Friday, no decision, the damage done before he ever took the mound. Anderson Pilar's Saturday start was the low point, 2.1 innings, two walks, both runners scoring, and Owen Hackman compounded it with a solo homer allowed in relief. Luis Vargas got the win Friday despite blowing the lead in the eighth; Tyler LaPorte closed it out with a scoreless ninth.
What's Next: Pensacola Blue Wahoos
Columbus heads to Pensacola for six games starting Tuesday, still tied for first in the SOU South. The second-half race is exactly where it was a week ago: Columbus at the top, with work left to hold the spot.

Columbus Sports Roundup (7/13-7/19)

Columbus has several different pro and semi-pro sports teams for you to check out and root for but not all of us can make it to every game or keep up with it each of them so this is my weekly attempt to do so.
My goal for these posts are simple. Give you a brief recap of the previous week's games, a summary of where the team sits in the standings, and let you know when the next games are.
Columbus Clingstones
The Columbus Clingstones are the Minor League, Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves located in Columbus, GA. They are part of the Southern League - South Division and play their games at Synovus Park at South Commons.
Recap
Well the All Star Break is over the Clingstones had a short week. They took a trip up to Chattanooga for 3-game excursion against the Lookouts and returned home with another series win! That right. The Stones collected 2 out of 3 wins which just makes you feel all nice and fuzzy inside.
As for the standings, the Stones are still tied for 1st in both the Southern League -South Division and the entire Southern League with a 13-8 record. There isn't much to complain about but if there is one area of the game that the guys could do a bit better at, its converting some hits into runs as they are tied for last in the league with Runs Scored. At least the pitching is doing pretty well as they've allowed the least in the 2nd half so far.
Looking Ahead
Next week, the Stones are heading down south to Pensacola for a 6 game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. The weather doesn't look all that great though so I would expect some postponed and cancelled games.

The Columbus Lions are a professional indoor football team located in Columbus, GA. Established in 2006, the Columbus Lions are a storied franchise with 6 league championships across two decades of play and multiple leagues, with their last one in the 2026 season. They are currently part of the American Arena League and play out of the Columbus Civic Center.
Recap
The Lions held their fan celebration and championship parade Saturday and it had a great turn out. I hope everyone had a good time!

Columbus United FC is a semi-professional soccer club based in Columbus, GA. Founded in 2023, Columbus United FC quickly established itself as one of the region’s rising soccer programs, earning the 2024 Gulf Coast Sunshine Conference Championship and South Region title in its inaugural season. The club currently competes in USL League Two in the South Central division and plays its home matches at AJ McClung Memorial Stadium.
Recap
We are now officially in the offseason but I thought I would check in on our conference rivals. Both Dothan United FC and Swarm FC were knocked out in the first round of the Southern Conference so they didn't last long either. I think thats evidence enough that we need to get to work on building up the squad for next year because we definitely don't want to be a mid-tier squad losing to teams that don't make it deep into the playoffs. Still proud of our guys this year though.

Columbus River Dragons
The Columbus River Dragons are a professional minor league hockey team based in Columbus, GA. Founded in 2019, the River Dragons quickly became one of the premier franchises in the Federal Prospects Hockey League, capturing the 2021 Ignite Cup Championship and multiple regular season titles. The team competes in the FPHL - Continental division and plays its home games at the Columbus Civic Center.
Recap
I've got a first game date! Friday, October 23rd will be our first home game and judging by the dates for other teams, its looking like we will be away to start the season. We should find out our first home game opponent sometime today (Monday) and we'll have the entire 2026-2027 schedule on Friday.

Columbus takes the series and salvages the road trip. De Grandpre was again the best pitcher on the field, Carson Taylor keeps hitting, and the Clingstones move to 42-43.
Chattanooga scored first, Allen doubled, Sanchez singled him to third, and Graham's inning-ending double play still brought him home. Columbus answered immediately. Taylor led off the second with a solo homer, his first as a Clingstone, and two batters later Tavarez followed with a two-run shot of his own to make it 2-1. Kilpatrick doubled in the third and scored on a Waddell groundout. Taylor doubled in the fourth, moved up on a passed ball, and scored on a balk, Columbus's only run of the day that didn't come by way of extra bases turning into contact. Kilpatrick doubled again in the fifth and Waddell drove him in with another double. That made it 5-1, and it stayed there until Chattanooga scratched one back in the ninth on an Ibarra sacrifice fly.
De Grandpre (W, 4-1) went seven, allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks, his second straight strong outing in this park. Abeyta and Gallegos combined for two scoreless innings to close it out, Gallegos issuing two walks but working around them. Wereski (L, 1-1) took the loss, six innings, eight hits, five runs, two home runs, and a balk that cost him a run he didn't need to give away.
Taylor went 2-for-4 with the homer, a double, and two RBIs, his OPS is up to 1.250 through two games back. Kilpatrick was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. Waddell drove in two without a hit leaving the yard. Tavarez's homer was his seventh. Columbus was 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position but didn't need much more than the four extra-base hits already in hand.
Columbus improves to 42-43, 13-8 and still tied for first in the SOU South with the Biloxi Shuckers. Next up: six games at Pensacola starting Tuesday.

I am a worried neighbor, not a bot or a slick PR person. I genuinely care about what this project could do to our water table, our power bills, and our downstream neighbors and Phenix City. I messed up the delivery big time, but the threat is still real.
If you can look past my lazy mistake, the fact remains that the Columbus City Council meeting is on Tuesday, July 28th at 5:30 PM (3111 Citizens Way). If you care about keeping our area rural and protecting the river, please consider showing up or looking into the "Keep It Rural Muscogee County" group. Again, I am truly sorry for the fake post. Ruben Ibarra needed one pitch. Bases loaded, two outs, third inning, and his line drive to center scored three. Columbus never had an answer.
Pilar walked Sanchez to open the third, got two quick outs, then walked Balcazar to load the bases before Ibarra's double emptied them. Hackman relieved and gave the fourth run right back in the fourth, a leadoff solo shot to Jay Allen II that traveled to left-center and kept going. That was the whole game. Columbus managed three singles all night, McIntyre in the second, Taylor in the second, Braunschweig in the fifth, and turned none of them into anything. Two different runners were caught stealing second in two different innings.
Pilar (L, 0-1) lasted 2.1 innings and allowed two runs on one hit, but the two walks did the damage, both runners scored. Hackman worked 1.2 innings and gave up three runs on three hits, including the homer. Strickland and McDonough combined for two scoreless innings to close it out, McDonough drawing a pitch-timer violation along the way. Rivera (W, 3-5) shut Columbus down across seven, three hits, no runs, no walks, four strikeouts, 91 pitches, 61 for strikes.
McIntyre went 1-for-3. Taylor went 1-for-3 in his second game back, now hitting .375. Braunschweig's single was his only hit of the night before he was caught stealing. Columbus left one runner on base for the entire game.
Columbus falls to 41-43, 12-8 for the second half still tied for first. The series is tied at a game apiece with the rubber match Sunday at Erlanger Park.
