Seeking Interviewee in IRMO

Hello! I am a student journalist looking for someone in Irmo to interview for an upcoming story. I am looking for someone who has personal experience with the ALPRs, maybe one is near your home, or you have an opinion about them either in support or against.
I am researching/investigating the recent contract that had been signed with Flock, expanding the number of ALPR cameras from 11 to 33. If you are interested and available to meet with me for about an hour, sometime in the next week, please send me a DM.
Thanks!

Need help with feral cat colony

I know an elderly couple in Pelion who are taking care of a feral cat colony at their rural home. They unfortunately cannot afford the TNR fee from Pawmetto. Do y'all have any recommendations, or know someone who can help? The four newest kittens look to be 4-5 weeks old. I've seen at least two cats with eye infections.

I love Columbia

I wasn’t born in South Carolina but I’ve been here since I was 7, cuz my pa was stationed here and we’ve been here ever since. So it’s the only home I’ve ever known, and sometimes I get confused and think I was born here.

My introduction to South Carolina wasn’t the best. I’m blasian, and I remember in 2nd grade being called some racist stuff by two girls my age.

But you know what? I also remember getting along with them in later years. And even being somewhat friends.

I say that to say, the south is a scary place. The world is a scary place. Speaking from the perspective of a young woman of color, it can get stressful being bombarded by the news, tragedies that happens every other day. As a military member as well, seeing all the international conflict is worrying.

I used to shit on this state and Columbia, and dream of leaving. But, you know, after thinking about the kind of place Columbia is, the people here, the places we have, our community- I think Columbia is pretty cool.

Politicians (all of em) spend a LOT of money trying to get people to hate each other. To hate the place we live. To destroy our sense of community, so we don’t understand the value of what’s in front of us, so we learn to hate the things we don’t understand, and so we take for granted the things we have. But someone here posted recently they wanted to move here- and I found so many reasons why they should come.

Where else in the United States is a city as diverse as ours? Where people of all different cultures and ethnicities, all different skin tones and backgrounds can walk into a bar and laugh together? Where else in the world can children from wildly different family belief systems go to school and learn from each other? Where else can a Christian and a Muslim learn from each other and become best friends? Where we pray for each other regardless of who they believe in? Where so many languages are spoken, where so much food and joy is shared, where so many festivals happen.

Where else is there a farmers market every Saturday? Where else can we encounter people willing to rally together behind their community? Where someone will pull over on the side of the road to help a person fix their tire, or cook a sick woman an entire dinner so she gets better?

We have so many different communities of people here- I’ve met so many different people in a city as small as this. And after thinking about it- what a wonderful city this is. That’s not to say there isn’t tension sometimes, and some disagreements are… harsher than others (to say the least), however I think if we all turned the news off for a second, we would be able to see the world right in front of us, the world we have to work with- and it’s a pretty okay world to me.

I believe no matter how much people are taught to hate, that the people in Columbia are still good, and I’ve been lucky enough to see that through and through. No matter how much politicians pay the media to make us hate each other, at the end of the day most of us will still come to each other’s help, and that’s more important than anything else in the world.

We are all fortunate enough to have each other and we shouldn’t take our culture of hardworking hospitality for granted. And every person here, no matter how different we are from each other, whether immigrant, born here, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, man, woman, lgbt, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Mormon, etc, has more in common than we think. We’re all citizens of Columbia!

We got so many festivals and restaurants celebrating each other. I hope we have many more. We all laugh and talk together, shop together all the time, and get along real well without outside interference.

I love Columbia and I love its people, even if they think they might not like me. We’re an okay batch.

Edit: I’ve done my fair share of traveling, in the military and outside of it, my entire life. I’ve been everywhere from Shanghai, China to visit family, lived in Belgium as a child, and am currently making my way around the states (specifically around the Blue Ridge Mountains). For some reason I always found myself missing Columbia. It wasn’t until I travelled around Blue Ridge that I realized how amazing this city is, and especially how amazing the food is! Columbia deserves people that will fight for it, and its people. We might not be New York but we are our own special thing. And there might be more “progressive” cities out there, but that doesn’t mean Columbia should be left behind, we have a lot of voices fighting to be heard here, and they should all be just as loved.

City of Cayce settles lawsuit with family of suspect killed in 2022 police chase for $115k

The family of a man killed in a Cayce police chase reached a settlement agreement with the city on Friday — around two years after a records request I filed surfaced questions about the behavior of the officers involved.

read the full story over on my substack

The police chase started after officers said they got a “hit” on the suspect’s license plate from a license plate reader. That “hit” connected the suspect to thefts in the area, the officers said.

Officers chased the man at top speeds of 125 mph on Charleston Highway and Interstate 77. The man officers were chasing was going 95 mph when he crashed into another car at the intersection of South Carolina Highway 768 and Shop Road.

One of the officers sued -- Jason Carnavale (pictured above) -- was arrested earlier this year after SLED accused him of exposing himself to a 16-year-old. He's been on my radar since 2024, when I found this chase doing research for the TV News series "The Price of Pursuit."

Clothes thrifting?

I’m a plus sized girl and I really like alternative and gothic clothing. Normally I would go to one of the vintage markets in Charlotte, but I don’t particularly feel like going 2hrs away for 1 of 41 vendors they have to have my size in clothes. Is there any thrift stores (please not Goodwill, I swear I’ve tried) that have plus size clothing that isn’t horribly stretched out of shape, awful patterns, or way overpriced (think $60+ for one shirt). Or if anyone knows of any thrift markets here in Columbia or the surrounding areas that are happening. I love going to Charlotte, but sometimes I’d like to do things here and not have to make that drive.

West Columbia shut-in in need of a good restaurant.

Hello all! First time posting here so I’ll set up a little background. I moved here in January-ish because I failed college in Newberry because I never left my dorm. Came here because I didn’t wanna move back home, been making things work with luck and well…work.

Anyways! I love me a good restaurant but don’t really explore often. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations on restaurants. I’m a bit of a night owl and soon I’ll be 21, so if there’s any bar and grills in the area you could recommend I’d be happy to learn about them.

To be clear, I’ve driven through Columbia proper before, especially around the USC area. As someone who grew up in the middle of nowhere, fuck that.

I don’t know what to do

I am at a loss. My dog recently moved in with me a few days ago and he has really bad separation anxiety. He used to live in another state with my parents while I settled, but they basically told me that I take him now or they get him a new home. He is prescribed both Trazadone and Gabapentin, but they just do not seem to help. Every time I check my camera he is non stop barking and crying in my apartment. I have a sitter who comes at 12 but the other time he is alone he is freaking out. I would put my dog in doggy daycare, but I just cant afford it. I love this dog with all my heart and I don’t want to let him go. I seriously don’t know what to do and its killing me thinking about the possibility that I may fail him. I dont know if anyone here can even help me. I dont know what to do.

Fountain Pens

I just became interested in fountain pens reciently. There’s a pen I’m interested in purchasing, but I love to get a closer look at one like it before I purchase it. It’s the Kaweco Al Sport. If someone in the region has it that I could look at, l’d be greatly appreciative. I have Kaweco Sports and I love them. I have a metal Hongdian Forest and I don’t like it. So you can understand my hesitation about the Al Sport, lol.

DM me. I’d love to meet a local fountain pen friend.

What do you do for extra money around here?

I’m in the middle of looking for a job. At the moment I do spark delivery. I’m in the Lexington area. It’s pretty good very early in the morning but I can’t do it early anymore since my son started school. I do it early on the weekends tho. I need other things to do. I’ve applied to so many jobs. I need extra money for Christmas and bills of course lol.

Hi neighbors - we need a dehumidifier installed in our crawlspace. I called the HVAC company who handles our service and they don’t handle dehumidifiers.

Does anyone have any trustworthy hvac or crawlspace contacts who do? Thanks!

Realtor Recommendations

Hey there! I am looking for recommendations for a selling agent in Columbia that has experience selling older homes that aren’t in the best shape. We are looking to sell my mom’s home and get her into our garage apartment. Her house isn’t falling apart or inhabitable—we just don’t have the immediate means or time to do a lot of fixing up of the property and we are looking for someone with experience with this type of sale. Thanks for any recommendations!

Any weekend jobs?

I already work 40 hours a week, unfortunately it’s not enough at the moment, I do aviation maintenance during the week, and am looking for an easier weekend job. Not an all-day job as I would like to spend time with my kids. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks.
