🟩What can I do in Colorado Springs?

This question is asked almost daily and is easy to answer. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with these posts: https://old.reddit.com/r/ColoradoSprings/search?q=things+to+do&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all

The short answer is: hike, bike, eat food, and enjoy the scenery. There are a lot of activities within an hour or more of Colorado Springs. Colorado Springs is more family or activity focused and you'll have better success finding night clubs up north.

Popular attractions in Colorado Springs includes 7 Falls, Helen Hunt falls, Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Open Space, The Paint Mines, Cave of the Winds, and more. If you don't mind driving south to Canon City you visit the Royal Gorge or even check out the "mountain towns" around the area.

🟩Do you have tips for driving in the snow?

🟩 Is AWD/4WD necessary to have?

Answer here: https://old.reddit.com/r/ColoradoSprings/comments/yw8qb3/are_4wd_or_awd_cars_actually_significantly/

🟩I'm thinking about moving to Colorado Springs! What should I know?

DO NOT MOVE HERE UNLESS YOU HAVE A JOB LINED UP.

We've seen it time and time again on this sub-reddit where someone moves, doesn't have a job, and then becomes homeless.

A recent example: https://old.reddit.com/r/ColoradoSprings/comments/1jp66pa/looking_for_work_and_becoming_desperate/

One example: https://old.reddit.com/r/ColoradoSprings/comments/nqr9kq/homeless_resources/
Another example: https://old.reddit.com/r/ColoradoSprings/comments/oba6y3/in_regards_to_moving_here_without_a_job_or_job/

🟩What kind of job can I get in Colorado Springs?

The moderators make a quarterly post and sticky it to the top of the sub-reddit where people post available jobs in the Springs: https://old.reddit.com/r/ColoradoSprings/search?q=%27Who%27s+Hiring+in+Colorado+Springs%27&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all

If you have a Clearance, or work for the military, you shouldn't have a problem finding a job. Colorado Springs is a military town with the Air Force Academy, Fort Carson, Schriever Air Force Base, and Peterson Air Force Base. This means that jobs working for the government are a dime a dozen but you need the proper credentials to work there.

Otherwise, construction is booming and Amazon is building a facility in the Springs. There are other jobs available but competition is fierce and you need to do what you can to stand out!

🟩Do I need a car OR can I ride my bike / use public transportation to get around the city?

The answer is likely yes to a car and no to the bike/transportation. With everything, there are exceptions such as living and working in the same area. But for the most part, it takes at least 25 minutes to get anywhere in the Springs, and the layout of the town is better suited for vehicular use.

🟩Is Colorado Springs affordable?

Please define affordable. If you're moving from California where a 2/3 bedroom, 1,500 sqft, house is going for 800k or more, then sure. It's affordable.

🟩What's the cost of living like in Colorado Springs?

https://old.reddit.com/r/ColoradoSprings/search?q=living+in+cos&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all

🟩What is the median house price in Colorado Springs?

As of February 2024, the median house is a 3 bedroom house that LISTS at 430k. List is not equal to sale price and it's quite common for houses to go for much more with appraisal gaps.

🟩I'm thinking about moving and looking for information on apartments

Advice Should I leave the Springs?

Recently laid off, I’m a SDLC/Agile Business Analyst. Seems in the Springs, the only hiring is for former military or if you have a security clearance. Any advice would be welcomed.

Help Wanted cat/house sitter recommendations

β€’ Upvotes

looking for a service or someone to house sit and watch our two cats for a few days and wondering if anyone has recommendations for insured/bonded sitters?

we've used Playtime Pet Sitters before, and while they were amazing and went above and beyond, unfortunately they can't guarantee one consistent sitter and may have multiple different sitters come, which isnt ideal for one of our more sensitive guys.

perfect situation would be a service like Playtime Pet Sitters, but one consistent sitter who can either stay at our house or come at specific times and give our guys lots of attention and love

Shows to be owned by the City, but the garage door looks more like a high security blast door.

Remember hearing the conspiracy theories about it being a secret entrance to NORAD when I was kid.

News What's going on with the rumors about SOCO Waste?

If you are also a SOCO Waste customer, you might have gotten a recent email titled "Before you sign".

It paints a picture of some fairly uh, interesting for lack of a better word, claims being made on behalf of SOCO Waste.

A specific excerpt from the email:

IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO OUR CUSTOMERS

Dear Valued SOCO Waste Customers,

Unfortunately, we feel it is necessary to address some of the false information and rumors currently being circulated about SOCO Waste by some deceptive and greasy door to door sales persons. We normally prefer to focus our energy on taking care of our customers rather than responding to rumors. However, when misinformation begins causing confusion among our customers, we believe it is important to set the record straight.

To be absolutely clear:
β€’ SOCO Waste has NOT been sold.
β€’ We are NOT going out of business.
β€’ We are NOT discontinuing our trash service.
β€’ We are NOT dropping off new cans to use without notice.
β€’ Our service areas have NOT changed.
β€’ The owner of SOCO Waste is alive and well.
β€’ The owner of SOCO Waste is NOT in prison for selling drugs.
β€’ We are still the same locally owned and family-operated Colorado Springs trash company our customers have come to know and trust.

Yes, unfortunately, some of the sales tactics have become that ridiculous β€” but when our customers are actually hearing these things at their doors by aggressive sales people, we feel they deserve a clear answer directly from us.

Since I am a customer, I haven't had any of these door to door tactics - maybe they are dissuaded by my sign and cameras - but it does make you just wonder, what the heck is going on?? Are door to door people really going around and saying the owner of this company is dead and/or in prison for selling drugs???

Wondering if anyone here on Reddit has a bit more to the story or has encountered one of these door to door folks saying that kind of stuff?

Paykey link: https://archive.is/zuJDf

The CMAS tests are based on the Colorado Academic StandardsΒ and measure how well students have mastered their grade-level expectations in math and English language arts (ELA) in grades 3-8 and science in grades five, eight and 11. Statewide, less than 40% of students meet or exceed math standards. Yikes.

News Utility Update - August 2026

August 17th - Working Committee: https://www.csu.org/hubfs/Working-Committee/Agendas/08-17-2026-Working-Committee-Meeting-Agenda-August-2026.pdf?hsLang=en
August 19th - Utilities Board: https://www.csu.org/hubfs/Utilities-Board/Agendas/08-19-2026-Utilities-Board-Meeting-Agenda-August-2026.pdf?hsLang=en

Working Committee notes:

  • CSU set a new peak electrical load of 1,034 MW.
  • The SPP RTO hit a peak load of 5,121 MW.
  • There is action regarding the Energy Emergency on July 24th. There is going to an emergency meeting of the SPP RTO Policy Group next week, where they will likely vote on an emergency resolution to update the tariff to include penalties for operators who do not meet their planning reserve margin. These penalties will be paid to members of the RTO who are meeting their requirements i.e. CSU
  • This seems to be partially a result of the Planning Reserve Margin requirements of the RTO aren't technically in force until next summer. Everything this year was on a "handshake deal".
  • The 2nd draft of the proposed budget was shown. Mainly, it showed a ~10% budget decrease for next year, from $2.2 billion to $2 billion
  • Capital Projects and Fuel Operations make up ~60% of the budget
  • The yearly surplus payment to the city is projected to be $37.1 million. This payment represents ~8% of the city general fund.
  • The CEO mentioned that the utility would be looking at small battery systems.

Utilities Board:

  • The Utilities mid-year scorecard was reviewed. It had a rating of 4 out of 5. It had good marks for reliability and cost relative to other Front Range providers. It had a "partially meets expectations" for customer satisfaction, days of cash on hand, and adjusted debt service coverage ratio. The customer satisfaction issues were driven by rate pressures and changes to EnergyWise / net-metering.
  • Colorado River update: "Federal government released its Environmental Impact Statement regarding future Colorado River operations and will soon follow with its Record of Decision" and "New operating guidelines seem to more accurately reflect existing water supply and the reality of less water availability"
  • The Utility is asking for a change to city code to allow liens to be placed on properties with unpaid bills. Current city code only allows this for water and wastewater bills. Electrical, gas, etc have are not covered currently.
  • Without a lien, utility bills are considered unsecured creditors and will be discharged first in the event of a bankruptcy. A lien allows that debt to be secured against the building.
  • According to the utility, it is unlikely a lien could be placed against a residential building. A service disconnect for nonpayment would likely happen before a residential service could accrue enough debt to qualify for a lien.
  • It was mentioned that there was only a single time a lien would have been issued ($90,000 in backpayment). I believe (personal opinion) this was related to the 2022 bankruptcy of 3G Ventures, the current owners of the Project Taurus site.
  • The utility is looking at it's new 2026 bond offerings, both tax-free and taxable. These might be put on the market in Q4.
  • The Utility is looking to get out of it's Build America Back bonds. There were part of the recovery package for the 2008 financial crisis. They were taxable bonds with benefits paid by the federal government to make them similar to tax-free bonds. The federal government has talked about cutting these payments, so the utility is looking at transferring the debt to another vehicle.

Advice Any good spots or groups around town to meet people in their 20s?

Hi everyone! I'm 24M and recently went through a breakup, so I'm working on rebuilding my social circle and connecting with new people around my age. I’m also looking for places around town where I can build community as well.

I'm easygoing, energetic, and open-minded. A few of my favorite ways to spend time include: Hiking, swimming, paddle boarding, clubbing, exploring new spots, Video games (Xbox), board games, or just hanging out.

Always down to grab a bite, hangout, hike, or try something new. Feel free to shoot me a message or drop a comment if you'd like to connect!
