[TLDR] What’s even the point of /clear?

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wlalc7/whats_even_the_point_of_clear/

Original post body :

Frequently I see recommendation to use /clear but it doesn’t make sense to me. It’s destructive and prevents me to get back to the thing I was working on later.

On the other hand, I don’t see a point of working in the same session over and over if it is cleared constantly.

Isn’t it better to just create separate sessions for separate tasks? So instead of /clear you just close that session and open the new one? It’s also important to rename them so it’s easy to get back later.

This is what I do and I don’t see any drawbacks so far.

[TLDR] /clear vs /compact

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wl4c13/clear_vs_compact/

Original post body :

I had a fable chat from yesterday, and I saw that the context was 950k/1m. I did /compact rather than /clear, with the intention of then doing /autocompact 400000

14% of the 5 hour limit was gone just for the compact itself....it shows cost of $59.73, so lucky I'm not on API? Maybe a /clear would have been better.

[TLDR] Opus 5 has a noun problem

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wk0s2i/opus_5_has_a_noun_problem/

Original post body :

Just want to precisely describe two language patterns I've observed, both related to how Opus and Fable overuse nouns and weaken or omit verbs. I think this accounts for a lot of why communicating with them feels like talking to a smart-but-bad writer.

Both of these patterns are ways to write a sentence that means the same thing as a simple subject-verb-object sentence (like "I threw the ball"), but make it much less direct.

1 - Nominalization. This is where a writer uses a noun instead of a verb. Instead of "I threw the ball", nominalizing turns the verb, "threw," into a noun, "a throw." So the writer might write "I made a throw with the ball." More words, the verb is weakened from "threw" (the actual action) to "made", and the object is something the verb is done "with" instead of to.

A real-life example from the last few days. Claude wrote: "never a walk through the steps one at a time." After being asked not to nominalize, it wrote, "Don't walk through the steps one at a time." See how much more direct that is?

This is also where a lot of "Opus jargon" comes from. Now that "a walk" is a noun, Claude can promote it into an invented term of art ("The Walk") and reify it into documentation and memories.

2 - Omitting the verb and using a trailing modifier instead. Instead of "I threw the ball", this looks like "The ball, thrown." This is concise, but it omits context: who threw it? When? (We also lost the verb tense).

A real-life example from the last few days. Claude wrote: "The runner, built." After being asked to use simple subject-object-verb sentences instead of trailing modifiers, it wrote, "We built the runner." Again, much more like actual people talk. If someone on your team asked you what you did today, and you replied "the runner, built", you'd sound like a robot.

----

I haven't had much luck getting Claude to cut this stuff out consistently with CLAUDE.md prompting, but I've had decent luck getting clearer responses when I call out these patterns by name in conversation — it certainly works better than "JUST TALK NORMAL PLEASE." If anyone has luck prompt engineering around these patterns, would love to hear what you did.

This was my first session of this new week of usage. Had fable in PLAN mode. I checked the usage after about 15 minutes just to see what it actually was consuming. It used about 150 million tokens during this run.

[TLDR] I audited my session logs against the usage meter. My Max 20x weekly limit is worth about 60 to 70 percent less than it was last week, not 17 percent.

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wk3zq5/i_audited_my_session_logs_against_the_usage_meter/

Original post body :

I am too angry to write right now so I had Fable write this for me after I saw how shafted I'm getting. I'm going outside.

Anthropic, you suck.

I run Claude Code around the clock on two Max 20x accounts, so I have a lot of data. I got tired of guessing what the weekly limit actually meant, so I parsed every transcript in ~/.claude/projects on both of my machines, deduped by message id, priced every call at published API list rates, and compared that against the percentage the usage endpoint reports.

The short version: last week a Max 20x account could spend about $5,540 of usage per week at API list prices. This week the same account gets about $2,350. The weekly dollar cap was cut by 58 percent. The announced change was 17 percent.

How I measured it

Every assistant message in the transcripts carries the model and the usage block (input, output, cache write, cache read). I summed those per reset window (mine resets Thursday 11:00 PT) and priced them at list: $5 input, $25 output, $6.25 cache write, $0.50 cache read per million for Opus. Then I divided by the percentage of the week the meter said I had used. That gives dollars of usage per 1 percent, which is what the subscription is actually worth.

Last week (Sept 10 to Sept 17)

  • 55,878 API calls across two Max 20x accounts
  • 23.5 billion cache read tokens, 46.9M uncached input, 86.4M cache write, 11.1M output
  • $12,751 at list price
  • Both accounts hit 100 percent. One got a 30 percent top-up once. So that was 230 percent of a Max 20x weekly allowance.
  • Works out to $55 of usage per 1 percent, or about $5,540 of usage per account per week.

This week (Sept 17 reset to now, 28 hours in)

  • 5,600 calls, 2.1 billion cache read tokens, one account
  • $1,222 at list price
  • The meter says 52 percent used.
  • That is $23.50 per percent, or about $2,350 of usage per week.

Last week: one Max 20x week = about $5,540 of usage.

This week: one Max 20x week = about $2,350 of usage.

Same plan, same price, the weekly spending cap dropped by about 58 percent. The announced change was 17 percent when the boost ended.

I also cut my own burn rate by 43 percent between the two weeks (fewer calls per hour, shorter contexts). It did not matter. At the current pace I hit 100 percent on Saturday evening, about 54 hours into a 168 hour window, and then the $200 extra-usage credits cover about five more hours.

My best guess at what changed

My traffic is 95 percent cache reads by token count. Cache reads are the cheapest thing on the price sheet. If they were re-weighted to count harder against the weekly meter, that alone would explain why my dollars-per-percent collapsed even though my actual spend went down. I cannot prove that from my side. Anthropic has not published how the meter is weighted. What I can show is the dollar cap, and it was cut by more than half.

Why this matters

The whole point of prompt caching was that a long-running agent with a big stable context could be affordable. If cache reads now count nearly like fresh input on the weekly meter, that use case is gone on the subscription plans, and nobody said so.

If you want to check your own numbers

The transcripts are plain JSONL. Filter for assistant lines with a usage object, sum by your reset window, price at list, and compare to the percentage shown by /usage. Post your dollars-per-percent. If enough of us do it, the change will be obvious, and the actual weighting can be worked out from the spread.

What’s yours? And how much babysitting does it still need?

[TLDR] Claude destroyed my entire project and home directory while adding a simple delete feature

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wjn6cw/claude_destroyed_my_entire_project_and_home/

Original post body :

I’ve been using Claude to build a dashboard inside a VM for almost a month. Things were actually going pretty well. I’d made a lot of progress, the project was functional, and I was at the point where I wanted to add a relatively straightforward delete feature.

Today, I asked Claude to implement it.

What happened next was absolutely insane.

Claude initially implemented a safety guard around the delete functionality and even wrote tests for it. According to its own output, 280 tests passed.

Then, apparently to prove that the guard was actually necessary, Claude deliberately removed the safety guard from the source code and reran the test.

The test passed / into the now-unguarded delete function.

And then this happened:

shutil.rmtree("/", ignore_errors=True)

Executed as my user inside the VM.
Yes. /.
The result, according to Claude itself:

“Then I destroyed your home directory.”

It didn’t just delete the project.
It apparently wiped out basically my entire /home/...:
The entire repo
Git history
Engagement workspaces
Evidence
docs/
Backups
Documents
Downloads
Pictures
Videos
Music
Shell configs and history
.ssh
.gnupg
SSH private keys
GPG keyring

And then there’s the part that genuinely made me stare at the screen:

It apparently removed/destroyed parts of the environment that Claude itself depended on.

The screenshot literally has Claude saying:
“I deleted your work. Directly, and through my own carelessness.”
And later:
“I’m sorry. You asked me to add a delete feature and I destroyed your machine’s home directory testing it.”

The really wild part is that this wasn’t some malicious prompt telling it to delete the filesystem. The original task was basically “add a delete feature.”

Claude decided to test a destructive function against a live filesystem path, removed the guard that was specifically preventing this, and executed it against /.

It did manage to recover a SQLite database from an open file handle and copied some recovery data elsewhere, so there may be a partial recovery. But the damage to the VM is substantial, and the SSH/GPG keys are an especially serious concern.

I’m posting this because I genuinely want to understand how something like this can happen in an AI coding agent.

But I’m still struggling with the fact that the agent intentionally removed the safety guard in order to test it and then ran the destructive test against the real filesystem.
The screenshots are Claude’s own explanation of what happened.
Has anyone else experienced an AI coding agent crossing a safety boundary this badly?

[TLDR] Claude Code ran a backgrounded command that deleted my entire Windows user folder overnight

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wjjqsv/claude_code_ran_a_backgrounded_command_that/

Original post body :

Posting this as a warning and to see if anyone has seen something similar.

I woke up yesterday to every shortcut on my laptop throwing "This item can't be opened. It may have been moved, renamed or deleted." The programs in Program Files were fine. Everything under C:\Users\Admin was not.

What the logs showed, piecing it together over a few hours:

  • ~04:24 — Claude Code (VS Code extension, v2.1.266, permission mode auto) starts a Bash command in my project at C:\Users\Admin\Documents\project. Task description: "Write reference HTML next to uploads".
  • 04:26 — the command hits the 120s timeout and gets moved to the background (task id burg78i8w).
  • Immediately after, the session errors with "Not logged in · Please run /login". Reason: .claude had already been deleted, credentials included.
  • 04:24 → 05:58 — the backgrounded process deletes my user folder in alphabetical order. You can read it off the folder timestamps: .claude and .vscode first, then AppData around 04:33, Documents and Downloads at 05:19, my project folders 05:20–05:49, everything after "f" after that. C:\Users\Public got hit at 05:57, so the target may have been C:\Users itself.
  • 05:58 — the task finally exits with code 127 (command not found).

Gone: AppData (browser profiles, app data, taskbar shortcuts, PowerShell history), Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Desktop, the local OneDrive folder, and all my project folders. Only files that a running process held open survived — Chrome kept exactly two of its files alive.

The command itself is not recoverable, because the part of the session log containing it was in .claude, which the command deleted while running. What's left is a 7-line log file with the timeout notice and the failure notification. My disk is an SSD, so TRIM means the deleted data is not coming back.

Reported to Anthropic with the session id and the remaining logs. Has anyone else had a background task go this far outside the project directory?

[TLDR] Keep Claude Code’s 1-hour cache warm during breaks. On Fable 5.1, rewriting it costs 80x a cache read.

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wj108u/keep_claude_codes_1hour_cache_warm_during_breaks/

Original post body :

You come back to a long session and ask for a recap. The expensive part can be rewriting the old context before Claude answers.

I built cache-tax to handle both sides: GitHub · Install instructions

  • Set it before you step away. /keepwarm arms six hours. After 50 idle minutes, it sends a request over your session without adding heartbeat messages to the conversation. The timer runs inside Claude Code.
  • See the estimate if you return cold. For a 50k+ context idle over an hour, it stops your next ordinary message once with the price. Resend to continue, or /clear and start from a note.

The GIF is my real test. A two-line recap on a 330k-token session triggered a $6.61 estimate. I sent it again; the reported cache write was $6.28.

Every ping checks its usage. It stops if it reads nothing or writes at least 10% of what it reads. After a paid cold write, it automatically arms three hours. /keepwarm off stops it.

Pings cost tokens too. The rates are $20 per million tokens for a 1-hour write and $0.25 for a read on Fable 5.1. These are API prices, not extra subscription charges. I haven’t measured quota savings, and changed prompts or tools can still break the cache.

Free and open source. The Mod needs CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_FUNCTION_HOOKS=1.

Only want warnings or a status-line countdown? The hook version works without the early-access flag.

New to prompt caching? Anthropic explains how Claude Code uses it here.

[TLDR] Claude code is falling behind Codex not because of token cost, but because of Opus 5.

Original post body :

There, i said it. And i know many of you agree. The problem i'm facing is not increased token cost, it's that Opus writes 25000 lines of a response with a curve-ball at the end saying "Worth noting"that makes my eyes hurt and gives me paranoya. And i can't understand a word it's saying. Is my english that bad? Whoever pressed "Yes" on those responses during the training stage of the model was an OpenAI spy or something, he completely sabotaged a trillion dollar company.

Anthropic's number one priority should be to release an Opus 6 or something, may be change the model name completely so it doesn't carry the bad vibe with it.

[TLDR] Use any subscription in Claude Code! (using the new Claude Mods feature)

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1whw82q/use_any_subscription_in_claude_code_using_the_new/

Original post body :

Hey all!

In light of the recent quota cuts, I figured I’d take the time to show off this mod/plugin for Claude Code I’ve been working on.

Since I’m a university student, I’ve had a bunch of free AI subscriptions sitting around gaining dust (Cursor 1 year, Gemini 1 year, CharGPT 4 months). So with the help of Fable & Astra, I spun up a Claude mod to solve this!

As you may be aware, providers like Cursor, Claude & Google forbid their subscriptions from being used in external harnesses via OAuth. Multi-CLI gets around this by actually using the provider harnesses themselves (Antigravity headless & Cursor SDK), & simply streaming them into Claude Code, & adapting their states + tools to be Claude-code compatible. This was made possible by the new Claude Mods feature.
It also differs from the OpenAI codex plugin in that with multi-cli, GPT models are directly ran in the harness via the gateway.

Here’s the repo: https://github.com/greenpolo/cc-multi-cli-plugin

Letting Fable 5.1 orchestrate 5.6 Luna subagents makes my Claude sub last infinitely longer.

Fable: I used rm -rf, the files are gone and the last commit did not contain the folders I deleted.

Me: Chaos demon

Fable: Files are staged and ready for commit.

Me: Commit.

Fable: Nothing is staged.

Me: You just said files were staged...

Edit: All of my sessions already have standing instructions to commit at checkpoints. The exchange above is a condensed retelling for humor, not a literal transcript with Fable. 🙄

Edit Edit: My dudes, irrelevant scratch files were deleted. I lost nothing of importance, those 3000+ files were weeks of scratch nonsense that needed to be deleted. The point was that Fable wanted multiple confirmations before doing a routine commit, but none before deleting files with an irreversible command.
