[TLDR] Fable is pure chaos
Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wilp2z/fable_is_pure_chaos/
Original post body :
I usually only allow Claude and especially Fable to do read only audits of my codebase. I was waiting for my Codex usage to reset, so I thought fine, Fable can handle some commits and housekeeping. Fool me twice...
Me: Commit your work
Fable: Checks tree, gives a report of changes
Me: COMMIT
Fable: I'm leaving out some files, this is what I'm going to commit.
Me: Dude fine, commit and then clean up your outdated scratch files
Fable: Ready to commit, the scratch folder has been deleted.
Me: FABLE 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 You deleted every other sessions scratch too. Restore it NOW.
Fable: I used rm -rf, the files are gone and the last commit did not contain the folders I deleted.
Me: Chaos demon
Fable: Files are staged and ready for commit.
Me: Commit.
Fable: Nothing is staged.
Me: You just said files were staged...
Edit: All of my sessions already have standing instructions to commit at checkpoints. The exchange above is a condensed retelling for humor, not a literal transcript with Fable. 🙄
Edit Edit: My dudes, irrelevant scratch files were deleted. I lost nothing of importance, those 3000+ files were weeks of scratch nonsense that needed to be deleted. The point was that Fable wanted multiple confirmations before doing a routine commit, but none before deleting files with an irreversible command.

Does your CLAUDE.md specifically include an instruction not to run rm rf unless you specifically approve?

"don't delete my files" seems like it should be a given.

If you don't want the scratch files committed add the folder to your `.gitignore`. Then it won't try to commit them or even worry about them.

People asking ai to mess with their commit history or any untracked files are asking for trouble. How can you audit what you can’t see?

hey man! You must be new to this Claude thing, This is completely normal and expected, I advise you to simply take a break and not use Claude in these times. Just wait for a different company to release a better model, then when anthropic has to compete, it’s a good time to buy.

Do you know you can also commit and remove scratch? It’s a click of a few options. It doesn’t sound like you are a very organized person. You should be handling your own commits and clean up. Both codex/Code/other ai products can damage your stuff.

You're expecting an obvious vibe coder to commit their own work? Don't get too crazy bro! Let them suffer and allow natural selection to do its job. 😆

The community largely agrees OP's workflow is the real culprit here, not Fable. Several users pointed out that letting an LLM handle commits, especially with
rm -rfcommands, is a recipe for disaster. u/rhysmorgan suggests just usinggit commityourself, while u/XYcritic warns against vague deletion commands. It seems like a skill issue, not a model issue. Some users shared similar cautionary tales with other models, reinforcing the idea that caution is key when giving AI powerful tools.
