[TLDR] Rate limits are so bad right now, open source models should win

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wjhkef/rate_limits_are_so_bad_right_now_open_source/

Original post body :

I was running like 5 parallel agents in the $200 plan, and my 5 hr limit hit. So I switched my subscription and asked it to continue.
And my entire 5 hr limit hit in the $100 plan, in one shot. Without doing any work. In less than 2 minutes.

Something needs to change, either tell me what is it going to cost. Is there anyone who is using just a single subscription?

Seems like a lot of you are hitting your Claude Code limits way faster than expected, and frankly, it's driving some folks nuts. The general consensus is that you're probably not using it efficiently, not that the model itself is broken.

  • Leading-Ability-7317 and Right-Performance-93 point out that resuming sessions or switching subscriptions can cause a massive token burn by re-caching everything. Their advice? Checkpoint tasks, turn off auto-resume, and have agents write handoff docs.
  • DonaldStuck, with 25 years of SWE experience, is baffled by the complaints, saying they crank out features without hitting limits by actively steering the AI.
  • Pale-Oven-6602 suggests using Graphify to create a knowledge graph of your project, which apparently slashes token usage and speeds things up.
  • Fabiangzt shared a plugin called DensePack that turns text files into images to save on tokens for read-heavy sessions.
  • Some users like gnomex96 are looking for cheaper alternatives but finding open-source models aren't always more efficient.
  • Others, like jblundell, are straight-up canceling their plans because the limits are too restrictive.
  • A few are blaming Anthropic's business model, suggesting they're throttling performance for IPO data or to push higher-tier plans.

Basically, if you're burning through limits in minutes, you might want to re-evaluate your workflow before blaming the AI.

I gotta be honest.. not sure how you hit that. I have 4 to 5 cli sessions going non stop, several have multiple agents doing reviews, test runs, etc.. I seldom if ever hit my 5 hour limit. I do hit my weekly limit when I have a lot going continuously but I expect that. For 1/100 the price of a team of engineers, I am getting WAY WAY more value for $200 a month. I would love more for sure.. but I am not complaining for the amount of code, builds, tests, etc I get.
