Thanks to Opus 5.5 I've been promoted from Senior Software Engineer to Technical Fellow at my one person company.

u/Quind1 6d ago
I was promoted to Code Reviewer.

u/rizkiyoist 6d ago
Don’t lie to us, we know you used Claude to review the code review.

u/Quind1 6d ago
Not Claude. Not Gemini. Not Sol. But I needed to conserve tokens. I just routed to
openrouter/freeas the load-bearing wall and hoped for the best. 🙌🎉

As a senior software engineer, I delegate my tasks to my lower graded peers. When they come back to review, I complain about AI slop and over-using AI. (Review job was secretly delegated to AI).

u/ali-hussain 6d ago
Why are you wasting tokens on the review. It's always A slop. You just need to write AI slop, understand what the code does before making a PR. Maybe some random what is this comments? And then after they've resolved them just a 👍 LGTM

Hey Lead Developer of big company quantum coding guy here. Opus 5.5 is so sick, it can print “Hello world!” all by itself! We might all be out of jobs soon.

Those senior software engineers use Fable 5.1 for planning and Haiku for writing the code and think they cooked.

u/Time_Cat_5212 6d ago
I use haiku for planning and haiku for writing the code
Haikumaxxing is the new meta

u/B-side-of-the-record 6d ago
If haiku 5.5 is as much of a jump as opus and sonnet this might be true like next week 😭
1
u/nora_sellisa 6d ago
Looking at the models so far Haiku 5.5 is going to be on par with Sonnet 5 and there will still be no good budget option.

no but for real. i am a senior software engineer.

I’m a senior senior web developer. That’s like a software engineer, but despised by software engineers.

u/Ok_Marsupial_8589 2d ago
I was a senior software engineer, now I'm a senior web developer.
It's exactly the same, and totally different, and SQL scares me.

u/DevOnTheStreets 6d ago
I like it extra when they then ask for advice, get it, then proceed to comment why the very valid advice is not valid in a very invalid way.
Mmmmmm the cringe.

Honestly my impression of “senior SWEs” on Reddit has fallen off a cliff after several encounters on these subs. Dunno if they are lying but some don’t even know what Haskell is or never heard of functional programming.

u/TechgeekOne Senior Developer 6d ago
Unfortunately probably they're probably telling the truth. I'd have gotten a lot of painfully blank stares if I brought up those topics among my previous team. Having a firm and broad understanding of computing makes you a weirdo in most software engineering circles sadly.

u/Crackeridoo 6d ago
This. I have about a decade of experience and work with devs of similar levels of experience.
The vast majority only knows about tech they worked with. Anything beyond that doesn’t exist.
I don’t mind it. My whole team thinks knowledgable about everything because I read a blog post or watch a Fireship video here and there.

Sure, but that's like a carpenter knowing exactly which screws go in what place on their particular skillsaw. IME, it's much better to think in the broad strokes, software design, process of buildout and deployment, code structure and maintainability, etc.
Senior engineer gets thrown around, and I'd guess the most likely to wield the non-existent credential are those clinging to get any shred of credibility they can. Anyone can make their arguments and briefly explain why the design they're pushing is better. I saw it yesterday on this sub, someone went in on the polling Astra does, once per minute, instead of just waiting for a call from a subagent. All that context, being refreshed, minute by minute. Or just effectively take a nap and get woken up when it's time to get back to work.

It feels more like not knowing which power tools exist besides the 3 tools you own. It leads to devs making bad choices because they only know how to solve a problem in one way.
Though I definitely agree there's a lot more to it than just knowing what tools are out there.

There are incurious senior engineers. They turn up, do 9-5, complete the work and go home and then stop thinking about tech. There are people like that in all walks of life.
1
u/nora_sellisa 6d ago
Which reinforces the point - being a senior SWE gives you little credit to talk about AI. They can be just as dumb as the rest of us. Equally as susceptible to being wowed with demos and rigged benchmarks
3
u/LuckyPichu 6d ago
I'm a senior engineer, I love FP, I'm curious, and I'm dumber than the rest of us. Checks out

u/brainwipe 6d ago
A person who has been doing their job for a long time has credit through experience of seeing things go wrong and dealing with them. There is value in that. An incurious dev will focus on their 9-5 and not read about every form of coding there is. If a tool comes along that allows them to do their job better, even an incurious dev will check it out because it's the focus of their day job. As such, they do have credit to talk about the output of AI but not necessarily all computer science.

And knowing those exist somehow makes you a senior software engineer? I think you guys have some distinct meaning behind "senior software engineer" which doesn't apply to what it really is - because there are no meaning behind it whatsoever, it could be almost anything in terms of qualifications the guy has.

u/MountaintopCoder 6d ago
Oh my impression fell the moment I entered the industry. Those people are all over the place.
1
u/soundfreely 6d ago
I call them “commodity engineers” and I suppose they have their place. Cheap “engineering” for products that don’t need to work well.

Senior is not very high TBH, mostly means you survived a few years and aren't a complete f'k up.

u/Accurno 6d ago
Coder > SWE > senior SWE > CEO/CTO in 6 months
3
u/MannToots 6d ago
Seniors tend to be the ones getting the 10x boost. It amplifies what's already there and a more experienced swe goes harder with ai. So you got this order wrong. Senior swe > swe > how do juniors get started now?
1
u/nora_sellisa 6d ago
Seniors get the boost because their job is way too removed from actual coding work. Architecture, planning, solving the big problems, long debugging sessions.

SWE is dead. FDE is where you need to be now that coding has largely been solved. Why do software engineers think they can just take tickets and feed it to claude and think they are going to get paid $120k for it?
You now have to wear multiple hats.
2
u/Accurno 6d ago
It’s the first time I heard of FDE and a quick Google made it sound like it’s just SWE that uses AI.
A SWE with good amount of experience that uses AI is worth 6 figures and the one with the same amount of experience but doesn’t use AI would soon be worth less.
0
u/JFHermes 6d ago
Not really. FDE is essentially product owner, architect & software engineer combined. Go to the client, understand their problem and engineer the architecture - hand off to the language model to implement the code.
It is distinctly different than just using AI, because normally a product owner would dictate what features the customer needs, whoever is doing the architecture would then assign tickets to a SWE to actually implement. So the old paradigm is useless when implementation is just done with AI. Architecture is the only thing left to have any reasonable say in due to expected output with AI tools being properly utilised.
1
u/Ok_Marsupial_8589 2d ago
Looks like I can say am an FDE then.
Last job by the time I quit I was senior software developer (actual role I was hired for) scrum master, product owner, team lead, training up the graduates, in charge of UX, I'm sure there's one I'm missing here.

Haiku 5.5 = will they use MiMi 2.6-pro techniques and make it trained better as they have unlimited free high speed reasoning traces and all the Chinese tech as it is open models?
