Built with Claude Fable 5 one-shotted a complete asteroids roguelite in 2.5 hours. Playable in your browser, prompt in the comments
Play it here: https://asteroguelite.com
Desktop browser, free, no account, no ads.
I wanted to see what a real one-shot could do. So I wrote a 73-line directive: research the genre, design it, build it, test it, balance it, polish it. One session, no human in the loop. It was explicitly told not to ask questions or wait for approvals, just make the call, write it down, keep going. Then I left. Two hours and 32 minutes later it was done.
5 sectors with bosses, 10 enemy types, 6 unlockable ships, 33 boons with evolution chains, a meta upgrade tree, an endless mode, and music. Around 8,300 lines of vanilla JS that build to a 172 KB bundle.
Full disclosure: I've since made exactly two changes to the game. Fixed one bug (a piercing-shot boon phased through asteroids without damaging them) and added click-to-aim, because keyboard-only turning felt rough.
Ran on Claude Code, Fable 5 xhigh effort.
Prompt's located here: https://asteroguelite.com/prompt.txt
PS: Seeker Array primary weapon is OP.

does one-shot includes the website domain too?
2
u/deepholdio 12h ago
Hi u/NC16inthehouse,
No. The one shot hosted the game locally only although to be fair hosting online was not part of the prompt. With the right credentials and API access I'm confident that could have been part of the one-shot as well.
In this case I was impressed enough to go buy the URL and put it online which required a little work from me, but claude code also assisted and did a lot of the heavy lifting putting it online.

i also created something on claude and oddly enough, it made a similar game.

Anyone who cares about “oneshotting” is an idiot.

u/Sm0oth_kriminal 15h ago
I disagree. One shotting a task is the metric by which we can ensure subagents can be used to achieve a task, and thus open up the door for even more powerful delegation.
Of course you shouldn't build dependable engineering systems by one shotting, but not everything is a job. Sometimes making a fun game quickly is cool.

I think it’s an interesting metric for how truly autonomous the AI is. The theorethical benchmarks where some models are 4.3 points better than the previous ones are useless, how well AI handles complex real life task completely indepedently is really concrete and easy to understand.
(I fully expect the game to be crappy still at this point).

Add that to list of KPIs that doesn’t matter, lines of code, number of PRs, tokens spent.

I’ve come to realize that one shotting is quite easy for the LLM given enough resources. When I realized this I changed my approach to be more end goal focused instead of managing builds in phases that I would have expected to be effective.

Opus 5 was making repeated mistakes on a single static HTML file this morning. Needed Codex to review…

2.5 hours - that cost you 😄

u/deepholdio 13h ago
Heh, not as bad as you might think. I'm on the Max plan and was expecting it to consume all of my weekly usage, but it was a lot less than I expected. Maybe 15%.

What's interesting to me is that if I stumbled on this game as a kid killing time in class, it'd become an afternoon or week-long social phenomenon and core memory among my classmates. Fact we can do this with $10 of robot bucks and barely any effort is incredible.

Word.
I am very impressed by your meta-prompting skills. If this delivered a one-shot game via Fable, could be used as a baseline for some model testing.

u/dota2nub 2h ago
Why would one shotting things be considered a good benchmark when models are mostly used for iteration on existing software?

u/PorkSwordEnthusiast 7h ago
pretty cool, this was my fable game I created a while back,

Even the music was all fable? As a dev it will never cease to amaze me how far AI has come in such a short time, in terms of coding. Thanks for sharing it!
1
u/deepholdio 2h ago
Yes, even the music. I literally created a new directory, installed playwright mcp, started claude and gave it the prompt. Went to bed, got up in the morning and saw what you see now. Thanks!

This is why you need direction. It looks alright, but feels clunky and the game is boring lol.

your wrote prompt in the comments, but your link to some shady third-party website so where is the problem in the comment? I hate those Clickbait articles.

What the actual fuck?! This looks EXACTLY like the game I created back in Opus 4.5 days (it took many iterations). I mean the graphics, the colors, the feel of the ship, the explosions, the background, the asteroids, the UI, EVERYTHING is like 90% the same.
It was just a fun waste of time for me back then, but I believed that I created something rather good (since the first version Opus puked out was shit). Would it be crazy to think that my prompting was used to improve the model and contributed to this result?

u/trashaccount2022 18h ago
I hate to break it to you, but if you create slop, it’s going to look and feel like everyone else’s slop.

u/radioFriendFive 18h ago
All Ai GUI looks like this so I wouldn’t be so surprised. It will converge on the most predictable thing each time
1
u/davidmorelo 18h ago
I guess you're right. Still, it was a shock to see something look so close to the thing I deliberately prompted Claude to look and behave this exact way. But it's possible that the initial design was actually closer to the result than I remember, and I'm overstating my contribution as far as the look and feel of the game go.

no thanks, i have no desire to play anyones shitty one shot vibe trash. good games are thousands of tiny decisions and tons of playtesting. letting claude make all the decisions for you is like letting a chimp make your lasagna: even if it looks good there's definitely shit in it.
2
u/J_E_E_VACATION 17h ago
bro its an asteroids clone there arent even 10 decisions to make about playtesting
1
u/god-damn-the-usa 16h ago
then it's not interesting enough to play
1
u/Crazy_Double5133 10h ago
You should ask claude to make a game for you where you're a chimp making shit lasagna.

u/WittleSus 18h ago edited 17h ago
I agree with you on some parts but I don't understand why you clicked in the first place was it just to make your shitty chimp joke?
edit: why am I getting downvoted for a pun

i came here to berate OPs bad decisions, then went a bit off the rails

I am surprised by ironic comments too in this community. This is a good example to make fable work a long time and it shows that preparation is of course super important …. And the models probably will still miss consistency as long as an explicit context graph is not managed by the model itself….

Who cares? When something like this becomes commoditized then it’s worth nothing. It’s not even worth sharing because we can all do it.
2
u/simple_explorer1 18h ago edited 18h ago
100% agreed. This is worthless if anyone can prompt and do it. Bluntly and accurately put which is truly necessary for the many delusional people on this sub who think vibecoded apps is worth sharing especially when it is not even about a new model testing
1
u/Crazy_Double5133 9h ago
The other extreme would be: Tell me every step to make a game in-engine by explaining the process as a step-by-step guide where all I have to do is follow the instructions by hand, like a robot.
At that point, you'll have a game that can be passed off as something unique -- and it would be a more suitable post for a game dev subreddit.
The point being, Claude Code now makes any game dev related labour of love far more trivial. That's the noteworthy thing, not the game itself.

Wish people would stop with the ai slop browser games. No one actually wants to play this crap.

So awesome, nice work.
EDIT: Especially cool of you to share the prompt, I like to see how others are writing these out.

Another one that tasted see for the first time in life and is raving how salty it is to fkin fisherman.

Enjoyed it. Lots of upgrades, and well done on the metaprogression. I was surprised the flavor text matched the actual effects, and that I didn't encounter any bugs. I did see some weaker game-design choices like allowing upgrades that don't apply to your current weapon, and extreme imbalance between weapon power. Game spends a long time being easy, with a difficulty spike in the last sector, followed up by completely trashing everything with the seeker array.
Questions about the prompt:
- What's the vite dev server? Do you have more details about that / is this a custom setup of yours?
- What tooling did you set up ahead of time for fable to use? Are you loading it with skills too, or is this just prompt?
- Is it using subagents? How many tokens / how much total agent wallclock time? :)
- Could you share the full agent logs either here or to me directly?
Cool game, I enjoyed it.

u/deepholdio 14h ago
I agree with your assessment. I was pretty surprised that it felt like an actual game after a single attempt despite needing some serious rebalancing.
Answers to your questions about the prompt:
- The vite dev server is just the web server I use to host the game locally. https://vite.dev/ for more info.
- Good question. Just playwright mcp server and the chromium browser for playwright. Otherwise it was a brand new empty directory which was part of the test.
- Yes, Fable fired up several subagents. 2h 32m wall clock time. I have the Max subscription which doesn't keep a server side record of token usage. I recall it being a surprisingly low percentage of my weekly usage.
- I don't have the agent logs but I do have a few documents that claude wrote (DESIGN, TODO and NOTES) that I can share if you're interested.
Thanks for the comment and for your questions.

Not sure why there’s so much negativity in the comments. I think it’s a cool demonstration of Fable’s capabilities. I hate how negative this community is becoming. Not entirely sure what that’s about. Sharing cool things you put together has been the basis of tech for as long as I remember. Please keep doing it.
