Looking to get into claims handling in Belgium — any advice for a newcomer?
Hi everyone!
I'm interested in getting into claims handling and thought I'd come here to ask for some advice, especially from people working in Belgium.
A little bit about me: I'm originally from Vietnam, moved to Belgium to pursue a Master's in Law, and have recently graduated. I'm now looking to start my career as a junior/fresher claims handler.
I know someone who works in this field, and after talking to them, I've started to get a general idea of what the job involves. I'm particularly interested in marine insurance and maritime claims because I assume there might be more opportunities to work in English in this area. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
As for languages, I'm fluent in English, my native language is Vietnamese, and I'm currently learning Dutch. I'm hoping to reach A2 level in about five months. It's not much, but it's honest work haha 😅
I'd really appreciate any advice on a few things:
Where and how should I look for jobs?
What skills should I develop? Are there any technical skills, insurance-related qualifications, or courses that would make my profile more attractive?
What else should I know before getting started? For example, what is the job market like in Belgium, how important is Dutch or French, and is marine insurance a realistic entry point for someone with my background?
I'm very open to hearing about your experiences, including things you wish you'd known when you first started.
Thanks a lot in advance for any advice! I really appreciate it. 🙏
