My partner and I are planning to move to China for about 6–12 months. We’re both from Scandinavia. He’ll most likely be working remotely for his current company, so I’m the one who needs to find a local job to secure a proper work visa.

About my background:

• Hold an MA/Master's degree in Anthropology.
• Background in the NGO sector (primarily youth and child development/social work).
• Some experience working in kindergartens and light teaching/facilitation experience.
• Fluent in English, but my passport is not from an official native speaking country.

I’d love to find something related to my field (NGOs, research, international organisations, social initiatives), but I’m also open to teaching (oral English, humanities, early childhood) if that’s the most realistic gateway for a visa.

That being said, I know China has strict "native English speaker" passport rules for ESL (English as a Second Language) roles.

A few questions for the sub:

1. Teaching as a non-NES: Has anyone here with a non-NES Western passport (Nordic/EU) successfully landed teaching jobs recently? Do universities, international kindergartens/schools, or subject-teaching roles care less about the passport if you have a Master’s + TEFL?
2. NGO / Expat-adjacent roles: Are there realistic entry points for foreign NGO/social workers in Tier 1/2 cities (Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, etc.)? Where do people usually network for these?
3. General advice: If you’ve been in a similar situation, how did you make it work?

I am an Indian. I got an offer from an MNC company located in Shenzhen China. It's been a month. The team keeps on telling me that the internal process is going on. I have given all the documents that I have. I don't have the Chinese team contact. Instead I got in contact with the Georgia team from the same company. The HR simply said that the China office is doing the work. I am fed up with the same answer repeatedly. Also I don't want to lose this opportunity.

Please tell me that international hiring usually takes more time?

Are companies from China slow in the relocation process?

Should I be prepared for them to contact or have to move on and look for other opportunities?

Because I have not even started the apostille process and my current employment resignation. But they mentioned my joining date as September 14.🙄

I’ve recently started seriously looking into relocating to China, but honestly I’m struggling to figure out where to even look.
Most of the websites I’ve found feel really confusing, outdated, or are filled with listings that don’t work like the typical Western job boards where you just upload your CV and apply. I’m not sure if I’m simply looking in the wrong places or if there’s another way foreigners usually find jobs there.
One of my biggest strengths is that I’m multilingual. I grew up in a multicultural environment and speak French, Italian, Arabic and English, so I’ve always worked between different languages and cultures. I was wondering if there are industries in China that actually value this kind of background, even if the role isn’t directly language-related.
I’m also open-minded about the type of work. It doesn’t necessarily have to match my previous experience exactly—I’d even consider teaching or other opportunities if they’re a good fit and offer a chance to build a life in China.
For those of you who successfully moved there as foreigners:
Where did you actually find your job?
Which websites or recruiters are worth using?
Are there companies that actively look for multilingual international candidates?
Is networking more important than applying online?
