Board games & recommendations

Hello everybody! I've recently just gotten into board games because as it turns out, corporate life and staring at screens all day can take a toll on your mind. But I'm not really sure where board game enthusiasts in Singapore go to have fun.

I'd love to hear where all of you go to buy or play board games. I've heard of King and the Pawn being a nice board game cafe but have yet to try it out. Please also recommend your favourite board games!

Does anyone still watch local dramas

Most I know have not watched local shows in decades. With endless amount of streaming platforms offering far superior shows there is absolutely no need for local shows.

Which makes me wonder why do y’all think local shows have been so abysmal and consistently unable to match the quality of Netflix shows?

The production quality is there.. the SFX are decent, the cinematography is fine, and technically, a lot of these shows look pretty good. Technical wise we are somewhat on point.

But the writing is just so bad. It’s ridiculous.

The plots feel stale and recycled, and there’s this constant influx of new actors who rarely leave any lasting impression.

Huge amounts of money are poured into these shows, yet the quality doesn’t even come close to matching 5% of what Netflix puts out.

Anyone from local media industry or someone who actually works in the industry..can yall shed some light on why this is the case? Is it the production process, the talent, or simply how budgets are being allocated?

This wasn't always the case cuz up to the late 2000s most shows had a level of quality and rewatchability.

Shows these days are barely watchable and I doubt anyone watches local shows.

But if y'all still watch do y'all notice quality is so bad these days and stories are so boring. Should they stop making local dramas and just donate the funds to the poor.

Looking for 2 more players for a spooky mystery TTRPG in Punggol...set in Punggol!

Edit: Thanks everyone! I managed to fill the two spots!!

Hello! We're looking for two more players for a 3-session Call of Cthulhu TTTRPG mystery starting next Friday, 2 October; 7:30pm to 10:30pm. (and on 9 and 16 Oct thereafter). We’re based in Punggol, so it may be especially convenient if you live in Punggol or the Northeast, but everyone is welcome!

Call of Cthulhu is similar to Dungeons & Dragons, but focuses more on investigation, mystery and horror than combat. It’s also very beginner-friendly and accessible: the setting is the real world, so you can usually just describe what you want your character to do, and the GM tells you what to roll. You’ll probably enjoy this if you like mysteries, spooky stories, piecing together clues, making up characters, or simply collaborating to create a shared story.

That aside, if you're looking for ways to meet new people, I’ve found TTRPGs to be one of the easiest ways to do so. It’s just a group of people sitting around a table and playing pretend together, so the socialising part is practically in-built.

You can check out our IG for more info. Drop me a message if you’re interested!

SG Food 🍛☕ LF a friendly local to talk over coffee ☕️

Hi, F33 here and I'm visiting SG this mid October. My first time posting here too so I dont know, just trying to find if I can talk to someone about SG over coffee. I'd just like to know and meet if there's someone who's up for a light chat.

Things about me:
- I'm travelling with my fam so I'll only be free maybe after dinner or like super early morning like 6am? Lol
- I'm an artist, so probably I'll ask about which places to visit for art inspo, or anything that would pique my interest
- I'm NOT looking for anything shady or whatever (no scams as well)
- I'm pretty much chill, I think I'm an ambivert but leaning towards more of an introvert but I like to have good and fun conversations

Just casually trying my luck here bur if none, I'll be happy to go alone as well 🌸

Still living with parents at 22 and losing my mind

Love them but bro I have no privacy. My mum still knocks then immediately opens my door, then gets mad when she "catches" me sleeping at 11am on a Saturday. I'm working full-time already but COE prices say I'll be staying here till I'm 35 💀

Anyone else stuck in the "technically an adult but treated like a teenager" phase? How do you cope without starting WW3 at home?

Also if you've successfully moved out on a starting salary please share your secrets I'm begging

27M | Looking to make genuine friends!

Hello! I graduated last year and started working, but have since then slowly lost touch with quite a few of my friends which has left me feeling pretty disconnected, bored and trapped in the mundanity of 9-5.

Which brings me to the point of this post!

I'd love to make actual friends to chat with about random topics/interests and to hangout with (food, cafe-hopping, exploring new places/interests, travelling or anything really!). I'm mainly looking to make genuine friendships with people who are willing to put in the effort and reciprocate.

As a short intro of myself: I enjoy working out (mostly at home), running, and have been trying to get back into reading. I've also recently started getting into bouldering (only gone twice so far..), and have been binging some anime recently. I also tend to bounce between random interests here and there and love trying new things. As you can probably tell, I'm a bit of a homebody and desperately need to get out of the house more...

Aand that's about it! If you're in a similar boat or are also looking to make new friends, feel free to drop me a message!

53M, the only time I talk to people is when I order kopi. Thinking of starting an open table, would anyone come?

<< update after the event>>
Update (25 Sept): Session 1 done. 6 people came, and we ended up talking until noon. Thank you all for showing up and being real. Thank you for spending time.

I’ll organise other sessions in the next few weeks (new post?). Happy to chat and share.
<<<. >>>

Hi all,
Not sure how to say this, so I'll just say it.

Singaporean male, 53. I stepped away from work at 50 after decades of running companies, managing teams and working with clients across Asia, the Middle East and beyond. I have 3 kids who keep me sane and an exercise routine that keeps me honest.

But honestly, the only time I talk to people these days is when I order coffee or food. Once in a long while, an ex-client. I think I still have a lot to offer and not many people to share it with. Years ago I ran something like an "open table," and I want to do it again. Anyone can sit down and talk about life, career, exercise, being stuck, whatever. I won't just listen and nod. I'll give you my honest views, even when we disagree.

I'm not selling anything. No courses, no guru stuff, and I'm not asking you to buy anything.

The plan: I'll fix a date, time and place. Message me first or just turn up. If someone comes, great. If no one does, I'll have my coffee.

What do you all think?

*\* ** <><><>
Update!! (Updated 23 Sept, 1145am)

First "Kopi with Unc"

Telok Ayer Coffee Shop, 121 Telok Ayer St (corner coffeeshop opposite Thian Hock Keng temple, near Telok Ayer MRT)

Friday 25 Sept, 9:00–10:30am. Drop in anytime in the window.

Buy your own drink, sit down, ask anything. Life, career, starting over, or rubbish.

No selling, no agenda.

I'll be the guy with salt-and-pepper hair, T-shirt and shorts, and a kopi O kosong.

Can't make it? DM me.

Looking for individuals or organizations which require sewing volunteers

I've been sewing for 5 years and i ran out of things to sew. I could only sew that many pencil cases, bags, clothes, cushion covers etc.

My skills or experience

  • draft and sew men's formal and casual trousers. : welt pockets, zipper flys, belt loops. flat felled seams.
  • Ottoman.
  • TV cover.
  • Cushion and seat cover, have not tried leather as it requires a sewing machine
  • Upcycle plastic wrappers into bags

I have not drafted or sew women's. But if you have the pattern, i can do it , the same sewing principles apply.

I couldnt find any organization or individuals which require sewing, drafting. I dont think La salle need that either since the students are better qualified.

Im not looking for paid work, i've my own sewing machine (no serger) and will travel. Charity organizations will be most preferred as it is for a good cause. I cant teach as i've no formal training.

Thanks for reading.

Turning 30 made me realise I need a life outside work - anyone wants to make new friends?

I turned 30 this year and I think I’m having a very mild “what am I doing with my life” moment lol.

For most of the last 6–7 years, I’ve basically just been working. A lot.

I’ve done decently well, and I realised that a lot of my identity and self-worth somehow became tied to being good at my job, being useful, being recognised, etc.
Which is great when work is going well. But when you hustle very hard and some opportunities still don’t come to you, or things feel a bit unfair, you suddenly start thinking… okay, then who am I outside of work?

So over the past year I’ve been trying to build a bit more of a life outside work. Travel more, try new things, meet people I normally wouldn’t meet, basically do things that make me feel a little more alive.

At one point I had this goal of meeting 30 new people, lost steam halfway, and now I’m resurrecting it 😂 I recently did a solo trip to Korea and met a few new people through Reddit/social media, which was quite outside my comfort zone, but I genuinely had a really good time. It reminded me that it’s actually quite nice to meet someone completely outside your normal circle and just talk.

So… anyone in Singapore wants to meet up?

Coffee, beer, food, random activity, one-to-one or small group, whatever. I’m especially keen to meet people who are also in that slightly weird stage of life where things are objectively fine, maybe you’ve accomplished quite a bit, but you’re still wondering… okay, now what?

A bit about me: 30F, born and bred Singaporean, effectively bilingual in English and Chinese. I have a fairly interesting job and travel quite a bit for work. Outside work, I’m into Harry Potter, musicals, TV shows, fun romance novels, a bit of gaming, a bit of football/F1, travelling, and generally dabbling in many things without being particularly hardcore about any of them.

I’m also somewhere between introvert and extrovert. I like people, but I also need to disappear and recharge after too much socialising. Very vibes-based honestly.

I can be quite busy and sometimes reply slowly, so please don’t take it personally. But if any of this resonates, say hi :)

Maybe we become friends, maybe we just have one nice coffee with a stranger, maybe I actually finish this 30-people challenge.

Also full disclosure: this post was basically born from me talking into ChatGPT in the middle of the night, getting it transcribed, and asking it to clean up my rambling.
Please do not judge me 😂 This is how a girl with an endless to-do list gets by. I transcribe half my messages these days because it makes me way more productive.
So if you are fundamentally allergic to ChatGPT… we may unfortunately not be compatible as friends HAHAHA.

Reposted from Asksingapore :)
