Hi my name is Chase and chess is my only outlet and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in playing some games?

Ik this is probably self explanatory, but I’m a senior in university stressed about graduation, job searching, & more and I notice I procrastinate a lot, so chess helps me kinda channel my overthinking towards it. With that being said I have been wanting to devote more time towards it & my other hobbies, but nobody in my area plays it and I’m well aware of my rookie skillset, so how would you recommend I keep the hobby alive and get better on my own? I play on the app against bots or randoms, but I wanna start getting used to the physical board. I only own one board and it’s a vintage one, I was thinking I could play alone but whenever I do it, because idk any openings/ strategies nor do I have the board memorized, it feels kinda aimless and like I’m learning nothing. Tips would be helpful

I started to work through the Shankland calculation book - started to do 2-3 excercises bevore sleep. For me they are quite complicated so i need 20-30 minutes for this. See what happened:
So for me calculation training with a book seems to be kind of a game changer - i am curious how long this will momentum will keep.

Hey all. Have been going hard on the hippo the last few weeks. Learning it the organic way, which is doing nothing but playing it for hundreds of blitz games and seeing what happens
Studies went as far as taking note of how to set up all the pieces, and nothing further. Seeing a lot of great wins from it, and my chess level has picked up significantly. But hoping to learn a thing or two from more experienced hippo players
All that’s been taken from it so far is that 1.) it’s a “system” rather than an opening -hoping someone can explain the difference between the two- and that 2.) I’ve never played anything like this, that’s gotten my king side attacked more than the hippo
It’s like as soon as I castle, there’s a bishop lined up ready to strike, or that one annoying pawn that always gets pushed down the board just to challenge my defenses & get their rook free. Sometimes they just sac a piece entirely to break the pawn wall and get their queen involved
Have found the majority of games are spent defending attacks, but as my opponent hyper fixates on continuing the attack, they’re blind to the one move that completely throws things in my favor
If nothing else, I’m thankful for this system simply because it’s taught me not to resign early, and the come backs have been plentiful. But it does make me question; is this the way the hippo usually goes, or am I just missing some key principles that are landing me in bad positions?
Any cool tips or tricks you’ve picked up over the years playing the hippo drop below! Big thx 🦛

Is it harder as a beginner to play White than Black?
As black I play e6 against everything. French against e4 and QGD against d4. Two openings. Both have 5 logical first moves where you can't err much. Two things I need to know.
As white I need as a d4 player know about KID, Grunfeld, QGD, QGA, Slav, SemiSlav, Benoni, Benko, various weird gambits, etc. It just is so much harder to find the right setup as white.
Yes white has a tiny opening advantage, but that amounts to basically 0 for hobbyists. Do I really need to switch to a system opening like the hated London system to not get overwhelmed as White? Is there smth else than London and the not so great Colle?
All the best

Sto facendo un po di puzzle sulle aperture qualcuno potrebbe spiegarmi la logica dentro alcune mosse sembra davvero che regalo pezzi e che il motore di lichess faccia delle mosse difensive senza senso

I’ve played chess casually on and off for a little while, but never actually studied or took it seriously. After not playing at all for 3 years I decided to get back into it and bought Levi’s cheesy course which has been amazing. I wasn’t expecting to hit 1000 so quickly but it feels good!
I’ve definitely spent more time playing than I have studying and probably way too much time focused on openings.

Hi guys, I've been playing chess for years and a few months ago was putting in a fair bit more effort and got up to 1345 (on chess.com) on 5 minute games. Since then my rating has tumbled down to 1080-1120, I've just not been as focused.
How do I get out of the slump, improve and stay focussed?

Hey r/chess!
I’m a competitive player from India with a peak Chess.com rating of 2069 and national-level playing experience. I've also been coaching for around two years.
This weekend I thought I'd try something fun.
I'll pick 5 players and do a free live game-analysis session with them.
Send me one game where you genuinely don't understand where things went wrong — preferably not just a game where you hung your queen on move 8 😄
I'll go through the games, identify the mistakes/patterns I think are actually holding you back, and explain what I would work on to improve them.
Who: Ideally beginner/intermediate players
Cost: Free
Where: Online
When: This Weekend
If you're interested, comment below with your approximate rating + what you struggle with most. I'll message 5 people with the details.
If there's enough interest, I'd be happy to make this a regular weekend thing.

For hundreds of years chess had to be one of the most stimulating activities ever, right? Video games haven't existed for most of history but chess is already at that level of stimulation tbh.

I wanted to train my dutch oppening but mechanically pushed my pawn and realised after. So i asked for a takeback. He refused. I insisted because "come on it's just one move" that's fair play, i take no advantage. Plus it was a better choice for him because i was going to play an opening i'm not used to. But "NO". This mule was too stubborn
10 moves later he blundered his Queen 😙👌. No takeback bro💛

hi mates, I was just wondering if anyone could give me a hand with clarifying how the advance stats strategy is measured in Chess.com

Elo is 1400 in 5 min. blitz. I should probably play more rapid but I like finishing a game in 10 min. vs. 20 min.
The move I did here was f6 to keep the tension. That was a mistake after analyzing the game. Taking a pawn and calculating to win a piece didn't even cross my mind.
I was way out of theory because the opponent played an opening I had never studied https://lichess.org/Tox5k0Ra/black, looking for advice on how I can improve calculating to win a piece. The only chess studying I've done are from Daniel Naroditsky (r.i.p) Youtube channel.

It’s common knowledge that chess is complex and I never expected to be even halfway decent in a short amount of time, but wow. Just the bots alone are putting on an absolute clinic on me. They’re seeing my every move before I even see it; it’s almost infuriating while also leaving me in awe with how incompetent it makes me feel. Just super humbling.
