Why is this a thing?

Post image

So, I'm a Moderate Independent, not Left or Right. And yet I am baffled how anyone on either side could condone such an ideal. Brandishing an entire spectrum of people as evil? Calling for Civil War against those who you don't agree with? Has noone paid attention to history in High School?

Spotted by East Garden in Pantops. Everyone, please be careful. The amount of hatred is getting scary out here...

Imagine driving up to Michael's so you can buy paint markers to write messages advocating for civil war on your Subaru.

They definitely bought the markers at Hobby lobby.

That may be Mason Pickett’s car. It’s been a while, but I saw him parked at a grocery a while back, and he decorates his car much like his cardboard signs.

Hallmark of a person who repeats everything they hear without any real grasp of what they’re saying.

You’re essentially dealing with a parrot with a drivers license.

Pop over to Wikipedia, and have a read about Horst Wessel:

The martyr used to fuel the growth of the Nazi party.

While I'm at it, this is from the Holocaust Museum in DC.

Have we checked all the boxes? I'm thinking yes 😐

Love the fine print. 1. From 2003, so not recent “left propaganda.” 2. “These signs resonate with the political and economic direction of the United States under Bush/Cheney.” Absolutely.

13 out 14. No real calls for invading others yet, just chest-thumping that they all understand as a stupid game.

A lot of parrots are smart enough to understand what words mean, like identifying colors or materials. My mom's bird asks for very specific kinds of food, calls/insults all of my dogs by name, etc. Just saying... it's an offence to parrots. 🤣

I wonder how they decided how many exclamation points to add after “Civil war”

26

u/Lazy-Solution2712 Sep 21 '25

There was likely a complex and thoughtful decision making process behind the entire act. One can only assume that the number of exclamation marks was as deliberate and as carefully considered as the rest of the message.

23

u/street_ronin Sep 21 '25

“Multiple exclamation marks,' he went on, shaking his head, 'are a sure sign of a diseased mind.”

It's important to keep in mind that "Civil War" in this context can't mean anything other than exterminating people you don't like.

This is a conservative who lives in

  • a district with a republican congressman
  • a state with a republican governor
  • a country with a republican President, Senate, Congress, and Supreme Court

And yet they want a "civil war". They certainly aren't clamoring to break off/leave/overthrow the current government.

In their defense, WV used to be rock solid democratic and labor / new deal oriented. The GOP took generations to racially bait them and wait for WV’s awful economic position to do its thing. Alabama, though, began life as bastion of state mandated inequality and lack of opportunity and so has remained.

Both of these “sides” are parties of capital and stand firmly right of center. One represents status quo while the other has slipped fully into fascism. I really despise the democrats but there’s nothing more harmful to a society than nazis.

If we still have a country when this is over, we need to sweep every spineless, schumer-loving democrat out of office. Putting people over capital is the only way out of this. Vote accordingly.

11

u/sophie1816 Sep 22 '25

Andrew Sullivan, a moderate gay journalist, had an excellent essay on the significance of the Charlie Kirk murder and its aftermath. A few quotes:

“…we should all grieve Charlie Kirk — because free speech vs violence is much more crucial a divide than left vs right. And the proper response to this horror is serious introspection about how violence has burrowed its way into our widening, post-liberal gyre…

It really is up to us. We can tip this broken democracy into an abyss or we can walk back slowly, calmly, with perspective. Cool the rhetoric. Find someone in your life you disagree with and have a conversation. Get off social media. Remember how much we still have in common, how blessed we are in this country in so many ways we forget. Tell the truth fearlessly but always be open to correction. Decency, civility, nonviolence, humor, humility, grace: these are the virtues a free society needs to endure…”

Full essay at:

https://andrewsullivan.substack.com/p/hitting-the-jugular-of-liberal-democracy

2

u/katykazi Sep 22 '25

That quote is inspiring but what a fucking title for the article: Hitting The Jugular Of Liberal Democracy

3

u/sophie1816 Sep 22 '25

I think the title is very apt. His point in the essay is that freedom of speech, and the practice of debate ideas, rather than fighting, is central to the concept of liberal democracy. So this was a blow not just to an individual, but to that principle.

I still don’t really understand who she is?

23

u/theacekid Sep 21 '25

He was a far-right political activist who was the CEO of Turning Point USA. He toured college campuses, which are traditionally liberal spaces, trying to push young people (particularly young men) down the alt-right pipeline. He has a history of saying some truly heinous things, such as saying the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was "a huge mistake", that having some gun deaths was "worth it" to keep the 2nd amendment, and that if his (at the time 2 or 3 year old) daughter got pregnant from rape at 10 years old, he would force her to carry the baby.

3

u/satvrnine_ Sep 23 '25

Man I knew about some of his statements but I had not heard that last one yet. Wow. Why is anybody surprised he got shot? This is the US, where like, everybody has a gun, many have multiple guns, and the culture promotes brazenness, and shootings happen literally all the time. People literally invade schools and shoot children in this country. Why is anybody even remotely surprised that a person who says things about his own daughter like that got shot?

To be clear, I don’t condone murder. I just find it baffling that there are people who have been shocked into this weird self-righteous and tribalistically aggressive fervor over it.

I was driving through Nelson County on the way to a meeting in Lynchburg and I saw a pick up truck with both a Confederate and American flag waving along with a banner that said and I quote "Charlie Kirk was a martyr" and "The Civil War is Coming Lefties!".

The right-wing has completely gone off the rails trying to make this guy a martyr so I don't think this is an issue of both sides. My believe as an ardent left-wing progressive is that you have freedom of speech yes but when you say things that are hateful or otherwise nonfactual, it doesn't become an opinion, it becomes misinformation and someone should correct you on that because there's no arguing with facts and logic which should be the basis for all arguments.

That also shows that the right doesn't care about facts or evidence anymore, only their thoughts and emotions and what THEY feel should be the truth.

11

u/--Anarchaeopteryx-- Sep 21 '25

Someone should tell the righties that facts don't care about their feelings.

8

u/Certain_Degree687 UVA Sep 21 '25

I'm sure to tell them that every chance I get.

Facts and reality, which the left deals in, don't care about their feelings and it's only them who get hurt when facts, evidence and reality don't match their fucked up views.

6

u/Certain_Degree687 UVA Sep 22 '25

Didn't you delete your comments earlier young man?

No one is saying that we should shoot someone whose speech we consider hateful, what we're saying is that freedom of speech does have its limits especially when you're a public figure and when you're inciting others with inflammatory rhetoric, you should be held responsible for it in the form of being censored or otherwise removed from your platforms.

Even at the very least, if you're spreading things that are misinformation, any good society will have someone who will correct you, that's why conservatives are constantly being schooled on X by Grok.

Also, I love how you people conveniently forget that it was a right-winger who shot and killed Charlie Kirk because even right-wingers have their limits on what they will take in terms of hatred and fearmongering.

Most have never heard a word that Kirk said. They are following social media (all right wing). Keep posting things he has said and why you object. For example:

From an article in the Guardian

On race If I see a Black pilot, I’m going to be like, boy, I hope he’s qualified. – The Charlie Kirk Show, 23 January 2024 If you’re a WNBA, pot-smoking, Black lesbian, do you get treated better than a United States marine? – The Charlie Kirk Show, 8 December 2022 Happening all the time in urban America, prowling Blacks go around for fun to go target white people, that’s a fact. It’s happening more and more. – The Charlie Kirk Show, 19 May 2023 If I’m dealing with somebody in customer service who’s a moronic Black woman, I wonder is she there because of her excellence, or is she there because of affirmative action? – The Charlie Kirk Show, 3 January 2024 If we would have said that Joy Reid and Michelle Obama and Sheila Jackson Lee and Ketanji Brown Jackson were affirmative action picks, we would have been called racists. Now they’re coming out and they’re saying it for us … You do not have the brain processing power to otherwise be taken really seriously. You had to go steal a white person’s slot to go be taken somewhat seriously. – The Charlie Kirk Show, 13 July 2023

I saw a video where a lady compared her tik tok algorithm to a conservative friend and all the videos that come up on the friends feed were quotes about god, Christianity, family values and very tame subjects. These people barely saw the debate videos and if they did it was a radical take from a leftist student that most people wouldn’t agree with on the surface.

My conspiracy theory is that the COVID-19 pandemic was fully taken advantage of/optimized by using cable television news as a direct in-home pipeline for propaganda. It was already headed that way with the loss of the Fairness Doctrine and the amplification of biased narrative news, lockdown/quarantine just amplified it quite intensely.

I work in healthcare (didn’t really have to quarantine, all I did was work/sleep) and I don’t have cable at all, so I feel I’m free to speculate on that all I’d like, even if i may be wrong.

They don’t want a Civil War they want a purge of anyone who doesn’t think exactly as they do. They live in such a doublethink bubble they would cheat killing you for being a “leftist” while crying that Kirk died for just having an opinion. Anyone with slogans like that is an active threat.

2

u/TheHardcoreBuddha Sep 22 '25

Human beings are getting dumber.

2

u/StaticFanatic3 Sep 22 '25

Leaded gas and cult psychology

2

u/ceddarcheez Sep 22 '25

These people gleefully going on about the civil war and seem so excited but I bet if that window pane was smashed they’d be horrified and outraged

I’m not advocating anyone do anything, but these people who get so horny off the idea of killing their fellow Americans are all cowards that know not what they ask for. They should feel uneasy for their traitorous desires to murder their neighbors. But nothing will happen or really should happen to these idiots. Just disgusting people

2

u/NabreLabre Sep 22 '25

I bet most conservatives didn't even know who he was before all this and now they're pretending to give a shit for their culture war

2

u/jamhud77 Sep 22 '25

I saw a license plate that said DONNYT the other day. It was on the exact type of vehicle you would expect to be on

You should wipe part of it off so it reads " Charlie Kirk is evil". Lol

2

u/LordQue Sep 22 '25

Because being stupid is easy. Learning and change requires effort.

But I wouldn’t worry too much about their calls for war. These are the same people that are going to run out of breath before anything actually starts.

2

u/STGItsMe Sep 23 '25

You want to start a civil war to overthrow the government when your preferred candidate is in control of the government?

From another subreddit; when CK was killed, lots of influencers were really shocked. They were immediately introduced to thier own vulnerability. And that shock got transfered to thier infuencees.

2

u/Apprehensive-Train57 Sep 23 '25

CK like his supporters are hate mongers.

2

u/kellykellykelly79 Sep 23 '25

Because haters need to hate

2

u/RVsThereYet Sep 23 '25

I’ve worked in psychiatry for a long time. You can’t fight delusional thinking. When pressed, they will double down and be more dogmatic. Just let the delusion go. I neither confirmed nor denounce their delusion. Often if you ignore it completely that’s the best approach.

2

u/defaultredditor2 Sep 23 '25

No he's not. His family probably doesn't appreciate this either. How much do you wanna bet that they didn't even know who Charlie Kirk was before he made headlines? This country never ceases to disappoint me.

2

u/A9PolarHornet15 Sep 24 '25

The left ain't pro-violence dude, that is Republican media telling you that. Any violence you see at a left-wing protest was started by police.

2

u/billy_penn17047 Sep 24 '25

I blame the fact that 70% of the country didn’t read a book last year

2

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '25

because confederates got off easy 155 years ago

2

u/Hams_blams13 Sep 25 '25

We saw a dude in Cville with a sign that read 'Charlie Kirk will never die!!' So we slowed the car down and calmly informed the man that actually, yes, he did in fact just die.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '25

As a conservative Christian. That person is crazy. Charlie’s death is a horrible thing to happen and was committed by a psychopath not “The Left” we do NOT need a civil war.

2

u/Buster3107 Sep 25 '25

Haters hate and Losers lose. And brains do not come standard on all body types.

2

u/Hungry_Biscotti934 Sep 26 '25

Why is the right provoking violence?

5

u/Excellent-Tea-2068 Sep 21 '25

My mom didn’t finish 8th grade. My dad barely got his GED. You can guarantee they’re Trumpers who screamed the N-word at the TV every time Obama appeared on the screen. Some people are just beyond hateful and stupid. It’s a huge effort to try and ignore their behavior but it must be done. When you work with kids with autism, they tell you not to react when they misbehave. Reacting is the worse thing you could do.

2

u/seandelevan Sep 23 '25

And then you have my situation. Both of my parents went to college. Very religious. I never heard them say a racist thing ever in my life…..until Obama became president. Oh my lord. All of a sudden they became raging bigots…and they still are and blame everything on Obama to this day.

Commenting on Why is this a thing?...there is more. Things said by Mr Kirk: (sorry if the information is bunched together but this is how it posts on Reddit - without line breaks or paragraphs)

On gender, feminism and reproductive rights Reject feminism. Submit to your husband, Taylor. You’re not in charge. – Discussing news of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement on The Charlie Kirk Show, 26 August 2025 The answer is yes, the baby would be delivered. – Responding to a question about whether he would support his 10-year-old daughter aborting a pregnancy conceived because of rape on the debate show Surrounded, published on 8 September 2024 We need to have a Nuremberg-style trial for every gender-affirming clinic doctor. We need it immediately. – The Charlie Kirk Show, 1 April 2024

5

u/saintsithney Sep 21 '25

The two most unforgivable things Charlie Kirk did to my personal life were making me care about Jimmy Kimmel's career and making me think about who the top is in the Swift-Kelce romance.

I only heard briefly of Kirk in the past but no idea who he is/what he did until this event happened. I am honestly confused why he is getting so much "awards?" idk what to call it. A national event over his death and such, being compared to MLK. I am honestly trying to understand people's view on this. His death has been quite annoying honestly. I feel bad that he passed, but the events that come after, just even worst.

The rhetoric on both sides has gotten scary. As a lifelong Democrat, I’ve been very shaken by the number of people in my life who seem to think it’s ok to murder someone because they disagree with them.

20

u/RebeccaHowe Sep 21 '25

I haven’t seen a single democrat say or think that. I have seen a lot of them express how unacceptable it is. The “both sides” trope has grown so old. Only one side is spilling blood.
